The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) National Extent Hydrogeologic Framework for National Water Census (NEHF) project is a multi-year effort (2022 through 2025) that will compile existing assets (approaches, data, software, etc.), develop a strategic plan, and implement an operational framework that is dynamic and multi-scale. Within the USGS, numerical groundwater-flow and solute- and heat-transport models have been created for a variety of purposes that include water-resource assessments, contaminant-transport evaluations, and water-management planning. These models are often supported by hydrogeologic-framework studies that describe the surface and subsurface distribution of geologic materials and their hydrologic...

The updated 2018 National Seismic Hazard Model includes new ground motion models, aleatory uncertainty, and soil amplification factors for the central and eastern U.S. and incorporates basin depths from local seismic velocity models in four western U.S. (WUS) urban areas. These additions allow us, for the first time, to calculate probabilistic seismic hazard curves for an expanded set of spectral periods (0.01 s to 10 s) and site classes (VS30 = 150 m/s to 1,500 m/s) for the conterminous U.S. (CONUS), as well as account for amplification of long-period ground motions in deep sedimentary basins in the Los Angeles, San Francisco Bay, Salt Lake City, and Seattle regions. Ground motion data for 2, 5, and 10 percent...

Twenty-four piston cores (and associated trigger cores) were collected from the source zone of the Currituck Landslide Complex and upper slope adjacent to Baltimore Canyon by the U.S. Geological Survey and the University of Rhode Island Department of Ocean Engineering during an eight-day cruise aboard the R/V Hugh R. Sharp in September/October of 2012. These cores were analyzed for evidence of seafloor mass transport processes, with an emphasis on constraining the age and shallow stratigraphy of the landslide complex. Sedimentological and geotechnical characterization of the cores was carried out through whole core imaging and description, followed by analysis of discrete samples at the USGS Woods Hole Coastal and...

This model archive contains the model files for the MERAS 3 and Mississippi Delta groundwater flow models documented in the U.S. Geological Survey Scientific Investigations Report 2023-xxxx. The MERAS 3 model provides a simplified representation of groundwater flow in the Mississippi Embayment Regional Aquifer Study (MERAS) area for the period of 1900 through 2018, with the primary goal of providing boundary fluxes for inset models focused on local areas of interest. The Mississippi Delta model simulates groundwater flow in the Delta region of northwestern Mississippi from 1900 through 2018, using boundary fluxes from the MERAS 3 model. A scenario version of the Mississippi Delta model extends the simulation to...

![]() The Coastal Storm Modeling System (CoSMoS) makes detailed predictions (meter-scale) over large geographic scales (100s of kilometers) of storm-induced coastal flooding and erosion for both current and future SLR scenarios, as well as long-term shoreline change and cliff retreat. Resulting projections for future climate scenarios (sea-level rise and storms) provide emergency responders and coastal planners with critical storm-hazards information that can be used to increase public safety, mitigate physical damages, and more effectively manage and allocate resources within complex coastal settings. Several versions of CoSMoS have been implemented for areas of the California coast, including Southern California,...

The Cabin Branch and Cabin Creek (Cappy Avenue) outcrops are located along two small creeks in Prince George’s County, Maryland. The Cabin Branch outcrop contains exposures of silty sands of the Upper Cretaceous Severn Formation, and both outcrops contain Paleocene silty quartz and glauconitic sands of the Danian Brightseat Formation and highly fossiliferous glauconitic quartz sands of the Selandian Aquia Formation. Data from these two locations were generated in order to designate a Principal Reference Section for the Danian age Brightseat Formation. The Cabin Branch outcrop consists of disjunct exposures along an approximately 0.4-mile section of the creek. At the nearby Cabin Creek (Cappy Avenue) outcrop a more...
Viral hemorrhagic septicemia virus (VHSV) is an aquatic rhabdovirus causing severe disease in numerous freshwater and saltwater fish species. Initially the virus was been found to cause disease in European fish populations starting around 1938 and was first detected in North America in the late 1980s. Of the four VHSV genotypes (I, II, III, and IV), the North American subtype IVb isolates have a broad host range. To determine whether endangered pallid sturgeon Scaphirhynchus albus, are susceptible to VHSV-IVb infection, juvenile pallid sturgeon and two pallid sturgeon cell lines derived from skin and spleen tissue were tested. Detection of viable virus via a plaque assay and molecular detection of the virus results...

A one-dimensional surface-water quality model of the central Salem River Basin, New Jersey was developed to examine the causes of eutrophication and predict the effects of reduced point and nonpoint source nutrient loads on water quality. The model was developed using the USEPA WASP code. The model simulates channel flow and the fate and transport of dissolved oxygen, oxygen demands, nutrients, and phytoplankton chlorophyll-a in the main stem river and largest tributary from April 1, 2007 to October 31, 2008. Continuous and discrete water-quality data from the Salem River were collected during this period to help build and calibrate the model. The calibrated model was used to evaluate the effects of (1) natural...
This dataset contains projections of shoreline change and uncertainty bands across California for future scenarios of sea-level rise (SLR). Projections were made using the Coastal Storm Modeling System - Coastal One-line Assimilated Simulation Tool (CoSMoS-COAST), a numerical model run in an ensemble forced with global-to-local nested wave models and assimilated with satellite-derived shoreline (SDS) observations across the state. Scenarios include 25, 50, 75, 100, 125, 150, 175, 200, 250, 300 and 500 centimeters (cm) of SLR by the year 2100. Output for SLR of 0 cm is also included, reflective of conditions in 2000.

The U.S. Geological Survey collected groundwater samples from 46 wells used for domestic and small system drinking water supplies in San Joaquin, Calaveras, and Stanislaus counties, California in 2019. The wells were sampled for the Northern San Joaquin Valley Domestic-Supply Aquifer Study Unit of the California State Water Resources Control Board Groundwater Ambient Monitoring and Assessment (GAMA) Program Priority Basin Project’s assessment of the quality of groundwater resources used for domestic and small system drinking water supplies. Domestic and small-system wells are commonly screened at shallower depths than public-supply wells. The Northern San Joaquin Valley study unit encompasses the Eastern San Joaquin...
This data release includes geochemical and fallout radionuclide data for suspended sediments and potential sediment source types for the Loutsenhizer Arroyo and Sunflower Drain watersheds in western Colorado. Suspended sediments were collected by passive samplers deployed in the stream channel of the watershed outlets during four study periods between August 2018 and August 2019. Potential sediment source type samples were collected in the watersheds in duplicate using compositing techniques that targeted the top 5 centimeters of soil. The four potential sediment source-types were: agricultural fields, rangeland, arroyo walls, and streambanks. Source type samples were wet sieved to less than (<) 63 microns (µm)...
This groundwater-flow model archive/data release contains the model input and output files for 1) edited versions of four of the five NAWQA steady- state, inset MODFLOW-NWT models of regional model of Lake Michigan Basin (https://doi.org/10.3133/sir20185038) and 2) general models simulating the same four basins as the four inset models. Two HUC8 basins in the lower peninsula of Michigan (Kalamazoo (KALA) and Boardman-Charlevoix (BOARD) basins) and two HUC8 basins in Wisconsin (Upper Fox (UFOX) and Manitowoc-Sheboygan (MANI) basins) are represented in the inset and genera-simulation models. The inset models are designed to serve as a training area for metamodels to estimate groundwater age in glacial wells. The construction...
In 2022, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) New England Water Science Center, in cooperation with the New Hampshire Department of Transportation (NHDOT), surveyed four transportation infrastructure sites with frequency-domain electromagnetic induction (EMI) instruments and one site with ground-penetrating radar (GPR) to aid traditional geotechnical site characterizations performed by NHDOT. Information about subsurface physical properties is typically obtained through the use of borings during geotechnical site characterizations. Geotechnical site investigations that also include geophysical surveys (such as the EMI and GPR methods) between borings help provide more thorough characterizations. Integrated analysis...

In 2004, about 90 migrating elk drowned after attempting to cross thin ice on the Mores Creek arm of Lucky Peak Lake upstream of the Highway 21 bridge. To better understand the depths over a range of reservoir pool elevations in the Mores Creek Arm, the U.S. Geological Survey, in cooperation with the Lucky Peak Power Plant Project, conducted high-resolution multibeam echosounder (MBES) bathymetric surveys on the Mores Creek arm on Lucky Peak Lake. The MBES data will assist reservoir managers and wildlife biologists with regulating reservoir water surface elevations (WSE) to support successful big game migration across Mores Creek on Lucky Peak Lake. Data collection provided nearly 100 percent coverage of bed elevations...
