These data are part of the Gulf Watch Alaska (GWA) long term monitoring program, nearshore monitoring component. Specifically, these data describe sea otter (Enhydra lutris) aerial survey observations from the waters around Katmai National Park and Preserve from surveys conducted in 2008, 2012, 2015, and 2018. Sea otters are a keystone predator, well known for structuring the nearshore marine ecosystem through their consumption of invertebrate prey. The dataset consists of 3 comma-delimited files (CSV) exported from Microsoft Excel. The data consists of (1) Strip transect counts, (2) Intensive Search Unit (ISU) counts, and (3) Transect coordinates. For each aerial survey, a pilot flew an airplane at an altitude...

This dataset provides clam species abundance and size data from intertidal and subtidal mixed sediment habitats in Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve (GBNPP). Data are provided for all observed clams, horse mussels, or urchins 14 mm or larger. Sampling involved excavating 25 cm of substrate from quadrats (approximately 0.25 sq meter) along transects at random and selected sites, 10 quadrats at the 0 Mean Lower Low Water (MLLW) tide level for intertidal sampling and 20 quadrats at approximately 9 m depth for subtidal sampling. Site and taxonomic information are provided. Abundance and size data are provided in two tables with different data configurations: (1) a compact version with data for those species observed...

This dataset contains sampling information and genetic data of 12 novel microsatellite loci developed and polymorphic in the Sea Sandwort (Honckenya peploides) and screened in Merckia (Wilhelmsia physodes) from Alaska. The allele sizes for the 12 microsatellite loci developed in this study are included for two populations of Sea Sandwort (Fossil Beach, Kodiak and Egg Bay, Atka) and one population of Merckia (upper Coleen River, Brooks Range).

These data are comprised of two tables, one table containing wolverine (Gulo gulo) sample and genetic information for 20 microsatellite loci (Gg10-1, Gg25, Gg37-2, Gg42-1, Gg192-1, Gg443, Gg452, Gg454, Gg465, Gg471, Gg473, Gg-3-1, Gg-4, Gg-7-1, Ggu_216-1, Lut604, Ma-3-1, Mvis075, Tt-1, and Tt-4) and genetic sex determination results from North America and one Russian wolverine. All samples were obtained from collections at the University of Alaska Museum of the North or the University of New Mexico’s Museum of Southwestern Biology. The second table provides complete primer information for the genetic markers since several were redesigned from their originally-published sequences for this study.

This dataset provides one table of bioenergetic and morphological measurements of Pacific blue mussels (Mytilus trossulus; N = 444) collected at three intertidal sites in Kenai Fjords National Park, Alaska. Mussels were collected at the same tidal height across all three sites on a nearly monthly basis from 2014-2015.

This data set contains information from recording devices that were set to record regularly during summer breeding seasons. A single observer listened to 2692 recordings, noting which species were heard during each 10-min recording. We used this information to examine how avian detectability varied by day of season, time of day, and ambient temperature. All study locations were in northwestern Alaska, on the Seward Peninsula, and recordings were taken between May 25 and July 26 in 2013 and 2014.

This data set consists of two tables associated with a study of Haemosporidian parasite infection in Northwestern Crows (Corvus caurinus) sampled at six locations throughout southcentral and southeast Alaska in 2007-2008. The first table contains species, location, banding, and morphometric data for all samples. The second table contains results from heamosporidian parasite screening of crow blood samples using molecular techniques. Genomic DNA was extracted from blood samples and screened for the presence of Haemoproteus, Plasmodium, and Leucocytozoon blood parasites using a nested-PCR method. Parasite genetic data is provided as GenBank accession numbers for any samples that tested positive for haemosporidian...

The dataset is a comma separated file exported from a Microsoft Access database. The data consists of observations made of foraging sea otters (Enhydra lutris). Observers used Questar field model spotting scopes and binoculars to identify prey. Date, local time, dive duration, success, prey type, prey size, prey number, handling time and surface time are all recorded. Sites are in Alaska and include locations in Katmai National Park and Preserve, Kenai Fjords National Park and Prince William Sound. This data in this file were collected 2012-2016.
