Using a solutions-oriented, multi-agency collaboration, we propose to pilot a large-scale assessment of an alternative (herding, electric- and virtual-fence) grazing strategy designed to mimic pre-colonial grazing patterns by bison, to ascertain their value for local- and regional-scale assemblages ofsagebrush- and grassland-associated birds in Montana. A fundamental goal of most wildlife-based grazing programs is to foster a mosaic of patches that represent the broadest possible spectrum of habitat types that benefits different sagebrush- and grassland-associated birds in different parts of the landscape (for example, western meadowlarks, vesper sparrows, and thick-billed longspur in open, heavily grazed areas;...

Conifer removal and management is a key tool for restoring sagebrush ecosystems and Greater Sage-Grouse populations, though the response of other sagebrush-obligate birds, including Pinyon Jays, to conifer management has not been well-studied. Quantifying the response of avian species to conifer management will inform conservation delivery to ensure that agencies achieve sagebrush bird and habitat objectives while minimizing impacts on Pinyon Jays in the sagebrush/pinon-juniper woodland ecotone. The results of this project will address key science needs on Pinyon Jays and directly inform more effective conifer management throughout the eastern Great Basin. Without these data, we will be unable to provide science-based...

The US Prairie Pothole Region (PPR) has experienced some of the highest rates of grassland loss in North America over a time that coincides with dramatic declines in grassland songbird populations yet increasing abundance of most grassland-nesting duck species except for northern pintail. To provide more insight into this contradiction, we propose to capitalize on long-term databases to evaluate how a key population driver nest survival for North American ducks has responded to system changes in the region including landscape and climatic factors. Outcomes of these analyses will contribute to testing primary conservation planning assumptions for the PPJV a vital component of the PPJV Strategic Habitat Conservation...

Insect pollinators-particularly native bees-are critically important in the maintenance of terrestrial plant and animal communities, yet our understanding of how contemporary threats influence this group and the pollination services they provide is virtually unstudied with the sagebrush biome. Our investigation will quantify how bee communities respond to widespread threats to sagebrush-wildfire and invasive annual grasses-and provide foundational knowledge needed for undertaking informed management decisions to improve the resilience of the biome.

The Conservation Efforts Database (CED) in a web-based monitoring and reporting tool that captures data about the conservation, restoration, and recovery actions for the imperiled sagebrush ecosystemand sage-grouse. Funding support from FWS (Science Applications and Nevada Ecological Services) have allowed the CED Team to develop a module for recording data about conservation actions, habitat condition, demography, and genetic information for Lahontan Cutthroat Trout and we propose to expand that effort to include aquatic systems in Legacy Region 6. We propose to use funding to engage with stakeholders to scope the information gaps and tool needs to record and monitor conservation actions and information focused...

This funding will be used to hire 1 GS 9/11 staff member to work directly with local governments (Soil & Water Conservation Districts) to enroll landowners in priority habitats in existing Candidate Conservation Agreements with Assurances (CCAAs) and in Candidate Conservation Agreements (CCAs) on their adjacent BLM allotments. Once enrolled, state and other federal funding sources are available to support sagebrush habitat enhancement projects that address invasive species, fire, juniper encroachment and other threats. The additional capacity is expected to result in an additional +100 landowners enrollments.

Grassland birds have declined more rapidly than any other group of land birds in North America in the last 50 years, with populations of Spragues Pipit, Chestnut-collared and Thick-billed Longspur, and Bairds Sparrow having declined 65-94% during this period. Developing strategic conservation plans for grassland birds requires an understanding of their individual population ecology, along with their community dynamics amongst species. Few studies have focused on understanding how adult density during the breeding season relates to nesting performance (e.g., nest density and nest success) and how abiotic and biotic factors influence these individual demographics. This proposed work complements concurrent studies...

Sagebrush habitat within the Yellowstone PAC on the Charles M. Russell National Wildlife Refuge is threatened by annual invasive grass invasion. Japanese brome and cheatgrass have been mapped across this landscape, and areas for herbicide treatment within prime sagebrush cores have been identified using threat-based imagery classification. Already-planned herbicide treatments include aerial application of Rejuvra (germination inhibitor) and Plateau (kills already germinated), both of which have shown high rates of success. While the herbicide treatments have been planned and funded, we lack pre- and post-treatment evaluation of vegetation and insect pollinators. Understanding the recovery and restoration of perennial...

Our science need is the collection of Traditional Ecological Knowledge about Yellowstone bison from tribal knowledge holders whose tribes have an ancestral connection to Yellowstone National Park. This TEK will be integrated into the upcoming Yellowstone Bison SSA and listing determination. Partners are expected to be the 49 tribes with ancestral connections to Yellowstone National Park and a trusted, third-party to conduct the TEK interviews. The key deliverable will be a TEK report on Yellowstone bison, which will help inform the Yellowstone bison SSA and contribute to their conservation.

Disruptions of movement, particularly seasonal migrations may affect transfer of key genetic information in addition to potential direct impacts from an inability to move to key seasonal habitats. Unfortunately, levels of genetic connectivity for both species are largely unknown. Understanding gene flow in migration corridors for these big game species will help identify where conservation actions are most likely to conserve genetic connectivity for mule deer and pronghorn.

South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks is contracting the ETC Institute to assist with a statewide public opinion survey. This data collection effort will provide updated social science data as part of the 2024 Wildlife Action Plan revision. The South Dakota Wildlife Action Plan (WAP) measures the health of fish, wildlife, and their associated habitats, assesses the problems they face, and plans out actions that will support their long-term conservation. The most recent WAP was revised in 2014 as part of the mandatory process for maintaining federal funding from the State Wildlife Grant (SWG), which is administered through the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. A revision is required every 10 years for South Dakota Game...

The Washington Shrubsteppe Restoration and Resiliency Initiative (WSRRI) is a new collaborative effortdedicated to conserving the states shrubsteppe wildlife and habitat in the face of increasing threatsfrom wildfire, climate change and other stressors. As part of a long-term transboundary strategy, we willwork with our partners to further co-develop and integrate TerrAdapt into adaptive management plans, enabling managers to better prioritize where shrubsteppe conservation actions (e.g., protecting corehabitat from invasive annual grasses and fire, restoring sagebrush and mesic habitats post-fire, ormitigating key highway movement barriers) are implemented to maintain ecologically connectednetworks of habitat that...

Key grassland birds of conservation concern (Bairds sparrow, Spragues pipit, Thick-billed and Chestnut-collared longspur) rely almost solely on the Chihuahuan desert for stopover and non-breeding habitat. These high desert grasslands are severely threatened by agricultural conversion and shrub encroachment, yet we still lack vital information about winter survival rates and how populations are linked through migratory connectivity. To inform strategic conservation planning and fill key knowledge gaps in our understanding of habitat needs and population limiting factors across the full annual cycle, studies of grassland birds on the wintering grounds are essential. In coordination with the Great Plains Motus Collaborative...

Vast areas of the PNW remain data deficient with respect to the estimated more than 750 wild bee species that provide essential ecosystem services there. The Oregon Bee Atlas is working with expert volunteer Master Melittologists to address these deficits by conducting intensive multi-method inventory and monitoring field work throughout the state and with a special focus in Grassland and Sagebrush habitats due to their rich biodiversity. This field work generates species occurrence data, data on community assemblage, ecological data on bee-floral relations, and collects genetic material for hundreds of pollinator species. This informs conservation and restoration of species-at-risk, informs species assessments,...

Existing standardized land bird survey data collected over many years in and near the bi-state area will be analyzed to create models describing the responses of multiple sagebrush obligate songbirds to disturbances and vegetation treatments across a range of scales. This analysis leverages significant investments made by multiple agencies over 20 years to collect these data, and “closes the loop” by providing timely insight and knowledge to support management planning and prioritization.
