A total of 27 temperature sensors were deployed along the lower 90 miles of the Yakima River at 7 locations where cold water had been previously observed. These 7 cold-water areas had 3 to 6 temperature sensors installed to document the extent and duration of these cold-water areas and their impacts on mainstem temperatures of the Lower Yakima River. Cold-water areas included the mouths of tributaries, alongside channels, and within alcoves. Sensor deployments ranged from 1 to 2 years beginning in October 2018. All temperature data are included in the Yakima.temperatures.zip folder. Details of each monitoring location are provided in the site.locs.csv file. In addition to the raw data and site location information,...

The Stream Conditions of Chester County Biological Monitoring Network was established by the U.S. Geological Survey and the Chester County Water Resources Authority in 1969. Benthic-macroinvertebrate, habitat, and stream chemistry data were collected annually from 1998-2021 at 18 fixed location sites. Additionally, nine flexible location sites were selected and sampled annually from 1998-2021. Some of the flexible location sites were sampled more than once over the study period. All data were collected in the fall months (October-November) during baseflow conditions. The benthic-macroinvertebrate data collected was used to calculate six metrics and to establish an index of biotic integrity for each sample, while...
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), in cooperation with the State of Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation, estimated flood magnitudes for the 50-, 20-, 10-, 4-, 2-, 1-, 0.5-, and 0.2-percent annual exceedance probabilities (AEP) for unregulated streamgages in Kauaʻi, Oʻahu, Molokaʻi, Maui, and Hawaiʻi, State of Hawaiʻi, using data through water year 2020. Regression equations which can be used to estimate flood magnitude and associated frequency at ungaged streams were developed. The methods and results of the study are published in a separate report (https://doi.org/10.3133/sir20235014). This data release contains (1) a folder with the PeakFQ output files for each streamgage, ".PRT" and ".EXP" files, for use in...

A method was described for determination of trace levels of silicon by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) from hydrofluoric (HF) digests of biological samples. The volatility of silicon in HF digests was examined with synthetic solutions as well as soil and mine waste samples. A digestion scheme was optimized to achieve complete dissolution, avoid loss of volatile silicon species and produce sample solutions that can be directly analyzed by ICP-MS. The performance of the method performance was validated by analysis of a number plant and tissue certified reference materials for silicon by ICP-MS. The method was then applied to the determination of silicon from lung biopsy tissues obtained from...
Vegetation change is an important issue facing managers at Isle Royale National Park (ISRO). These data were created using high-resolution imagery collected in the winter of 2017 which was compared to the vegetation map of the National Park published in 2000 (project imagery collected in 1994 and 1996). These data review where vegetation cover type, density, and pattern have changed since imagery collection for the 2000 publication and provide a proposed reason for the change.
This dataset contains soil property and geochronology (Cesium-137 and lead-210 dating) data from soil cores collected in August 2014 in salt marshes of Jamaica Bay Estuary, New York City.

In support of U.S. Geological Survey invasive carp research examining aggregations of invasive carp in the tail water of dams, water velocity measurements were made at cross sections in the Illinois River below Starved Rock Lock and Dam on June 16, 2021. A total of 16 cross sections were surveyed, with two transects per cross section. Water depth and crew safety limited the extent of the survey. The discharge in the Illinois River at Starved Rock Lock and Dam at the time of data collection was approximately 185.7 cubic meters per second. The data were processed in the Velocity Mapping Toolbox (VMT) v.4.09 (Parsons and others, 2013) to obtain a depth-averaged velocity field for each cross section from paired transects...

This bathymetric dataset provides an update to the stage-storage relation for Quail Lake (reservoir) located in the El Dorado National Forest, Calif. Bathymetric data was collected using a multibeam echo sounder to provide near-complete coverage and was merged with USGS 3DEP lidar to compute a DEM of the lake and near shore. The DEM was used to computed storage and surface area for a range of stage elevations. Results show that the spillway elevation was 6799.3 feet (NAVD88) and the crest elevation was 6802.5 feet (NAVD88). At the spillway elevation the storage was 141.74 ac-ft with a surface area of 14.20 ac. At the crest elevation the storage was 190.05 ac-ft with a surface area of 15.89 ac.

The Maumee River transports huge loads of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) to Lake Erie. The increased concentrations of N and P are causing eutrophication of the lake, creating hypoxic zones, and contributing to phytoplankton blooms. It is hypothesized that the P loads are a major contributor to harmful algal blooms that occur in the western basin of Lake Erie, particularly in summer. The Maumee River has been identified by the United States Environmental Protection Agency as a priority watershed where action needs to be taken to reduce nutrient loads. This study quantified rates of biogeochemical processes affecting downstream flux of N and P by 1) measuring indices of potential sediment P retention and 2) measuring...
These tables serve as input data for hierarchical models investigating interactions between raven density and Greater Sage-grouse nest success. Observations were recorded over an 11 year time period, spanning from 2009 through 2019. The model is run in JAGS via R, the code is publicly available via the U.S. Geological Survey's GitLab (O'Neil et al. 2023). We recommend not making any changes or edits to the tables unless the user is experienced with hierarchical modeling. Freshwater salinization is an emerging issue for freshwater environments in the Chesapeake Bay, USA region. Salinization is often described by measurements of specific conductance (SC). This data release contains specific conductance observations collected by multiple regional agencies for streams within the Chesapeake Bay Watershed. This inventory compiles and harmonizes data from the Water Quality Portal (WQP), which is a data repository developed by the National Water Quality Monitoring Council and supported by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and U.S. Geological Survey, and the U.S. Geological Survey National Water Information System (NWIS). Both discrete measures of SC, which are single measures taken...

This data release contains inputs for and outputs from hydrologic simulations for the conterminous United States (CONUS) using the Precipitation Runoff Modeling System (PRMS) version 5.1.0 and the USGS National Hydrologic Model Infrastructure (NHMI, Regan and others, 2018). Historical simulations using the Maurer forcings (Maurer and others, 2002) were conducted for the period 1950-2010. This metadata record documents the simulation output files for simulations ran using the dynamic parameters file. The output files are aggregated at the HUC4 level and are grouped and downloadable by HUC2 hydrologic region. Each zip folder contains identical information, just for a different region and set of hydrologic response...
The continental United States (CONUS) was modeled to produce simulations of historical and potential future streamflow using the Precipitation-Runoff Modeling System (PRMS) application of the USGS National Hydrologic Model Infrastructure (NHMI; Regan and others, 2018). This child page specifically contains atmospheric forcings (daily minimum air temperature, daily maximum air temperature, and daily precipitation accumulation) from each of the global circulation models (GCMs) presented in table1_GCMs_used.csv, using the Representative Concentration Pathway 4.5 for simulating potential future streamflow for the period 2006 - 2100.
Escalated wildfire activity within the western U.S. has widespread societal impacts and long-term consequences for the imperiled sagebrush (Artemisia spp.) biome. Shifts from historical fire regimes and the interplay between frequent disturbance and invasive annual grasses may initiate permanent state transitions as wildfire frequency outpaces sagebrush communities’ innate capacity to recover. Therefore, wildfire management is at the core of conservation plans for sagebrush ecosystems, especially critical habitat for species of conservation concern such as the greater sage-grouse (Centrocercus urophasianus; hereafter sage-grouse). Fuel breaks help facilitate wildfire suppression by modifying behavior through fuels...
Amphibians are vulnerable to extinction owing, partly, to altered physiological processes induced by projected global warming and drying. Understanding the mechanisms behind their responses is essential to formulate adaptation strategies for their conservation. Puerto Rico harbors 15 endemic Eleutherodactylus frogs considered vulnerable to extinction due to poor vagility and sensitivity to environmental variability. Herein are reported the effects of four temperature treatments (15, 20, 25, and 30 degrees Centigrade) on metabolic rates associated with specific dynamic action (SDA) and standard metabolic rates (SMR) of four representative species of Eleutherodactylus employing a respirometer. All species in either...
The continental United States (CONUS) was modeled to produce simulations of historical and potential future streamflow using the Precipitation-Runoff Modeling System (PRMS) application of the USGS National Hydrologic Model Infrastructure (NHMI; Regan and others, 2018). This child page specifically contains outputs of streamflow for each stream segment in the model domain and is based on parameterization with dynamic land cover. The parameters that were allowed to vary were related to dominant land cover type, percent impervious area, and precipitation interception by the plant canopy and snowpack. The PRMS parameters describing vegetation and impervious area were derived from annual estimates of land cover to incorporate...
Removal of two large dams from the Elwha River, Washington USA, in 2011-2014 released ~20.5 metric tons (Mt) of impounded sediment, ~5.4 Mt of which was deposited in the river delta and estuary. This dataset presents measurements of geomorphic surfaces, vegetation colonization, and plant community development in the Elwha River delta and estuary after dam removal. Geomorphic surfaces and vegetation colonization were estimated from aerial imagery of the delta and estuary in 2016 and 2018. Plant community development was quantified from field plot surveys of pioneer plant communities on new surfaces in 2014 and 2018 and of established delta and estuarine plant communities on older surfaces in 2007, 2014, and 2018....
This bathymetric dataset provides an update to the stage-storage relation for Little Rock Reservoir located in the Angeles National Forest, California. The catastrophic, explosive eruption of Mount St. Helens, Washington, on May 18, 1980, is the most well-known eruption of the volcano. Less well known is the May 18th eruption marked the beginning of a period of eruptive activity that lasted through 1986. From October 1980 through October 1986, a series of 17 dome-building episodes added millions of cubic meters of lava to the crater floor. Most of the growth occurred when magma extruded onto the surface of the dome, forming short (650 to 1,300 feet), thick (65 to 130 feet) lava flows. This data release is a 1-meter resolution digital elevation model (DEM) and a corresponding hillshade raster derived from a previously unpublished 1:2,000 scale topographic contour...
Sawgrass (Cladium jamaicense) samples were collected from marshes on five different keys (Big Pine, Torch, Ramrod, Cudjoe, and Sugarloaf Keys) within National Key Deer Refuge in January and June of 2015 and analyzed for contamination by the mosquito control insecticide permethrin. Permethrin was detected on 17 of 57 samples collected in January while it was detected on 40 of 56 samples collected in June. The concentrations on samples collected in January (below detection to 16 ng/g ww) were lower than concentrations on samples collected in June (below detection to 57.7 ng/g).
