We computed mean groundwater ages and age distributions at eight wells by calibrating lumped parameter models (LPMs) to concentrations of tracers (3H, CFCs, SF6) in samples using the computer program TracerLPM (Jurgens and others, 2012). We also measured 14C but all samples contained ancient carbonate from the limestone bedrock, and we were unable to resolve the atmospherically-derived 14C sufficiently to use it as a tracer. Tritium was below the detection level in two of the eight well-water samples, indicating the water was recharged prior to about 1950. Groundwater from the other six wells could be fitted to LPMs that were either piston flow models (PFM), exponential – piston flow models (EPM), or binary mixing...
This Data Release is a compilation of existing water-quality data associated with groundwater resources originating from abandoned underground coal mines in West Virginia. Data were compiled from multiple sources for the purpose of understanding the suitability of groundwater from abandoned underground coal mines for public supply, industrial, agricultural, and other uses. This compilation includes data collected for multiple individual studies conducted from July 13, 1973 through September 7, 2016. Analytical methods varied by the time period of data collection and requirements of the independent studies. This project identified 770 water quality samples from 294 sites that could be attributed to abandoned underground...
This digital raster dataset represents depth to pre-Cenozoic bedrock in northern Nevada as published in Chapter 6: Geophysical Methods and Application in U.S. Geological Survey Bulletin 2218, Assessment of Metallic and Mineral Resources in the Humboldt River Basin, Northern Nevada by D.A. Ponce. The data are represented on figure 6-9 in this publication and were later provided as raster format geospatial digital data via written communication from D.A. Ponce in 2007. The data have been reprojected but are otherwise as provided. A thorough explanation of the production methods is available in the larger work.
Selected evapotranspiration data were collected from 7/5/2011 to 1/1/2017 at the Amargosa Desert Research Site (ADRS, https://nevada.usgs.gov/adrs/) in support of ongoing research to improve the understanding of hydrologic and contaminant-transport processes in arid environments. The data presented in this data release includes 30-minute and daily evapotranspiration and associated energy-balance fluxes, precipitation, soil water content, air and soil temperature, wind speed and direction, humidity, and photosynthetically active radiation. Data methods follow those described in Moreo and others (2017). This is the third in a series of three releases of evapotranspiration data, which has been measured continuously...

This U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) data release provides a comprehensive dataset of water-quality results, physical-parameter measurements, hydrologic measurements, and site information collected to study the nature and extent of water quality along groundwater flow paths adjacent to glacial-kettle lakes on Cape Cod, Massachusetts. Water-quality samples were collected in 2003, 2005, and 2012 through 2018 in and near seven kettle lakes located on western Cape Cod, with most of the data collected in 2015-2017 from Ashumet Pond, which is located in the towns of Falmouth and Mashpee. Data were also collected at other lakes to compare the lake-specific influences of geochemistry and hydrology on the downgradient groundwater...
These data on the concentrations of 27 selected elements were collected using a field portable (handheld) X-ray fluorescence (pXRF) instrument (Groover and Izbicki, 2016) equipped with a 4-watt Ta/Au X-ray tube on samples of 1) surficial alluvium, 2) rock, and 3) archived core material and drill cuttings from monitoring wells across an approximately 14,300 square kilometer area in the western part of the Mojave Desert, between 60 to 210 kilometers (km) northeast of Los Angeles, California. These samples were measured using a pXRF as part of a regional-scale investigation of naturally-occurring trace elements (including arsenic, chromium, and uranium) dissolved in groundwater (Groover and Izbicki, 2018), and a local-scale...

Results from 1,459 single-well, aquifer-test analyses are uniquely identified to 360 tested wells. The Integrated Borehole Workbook (Borehole_Index_PM.xlsm) is an interactive Excel workbook that presents integrated results from slug tests and pumping aquifer tests that took place in 17 boreholes in Pahute Mesa and vicinity from 1962 to 2013. The Metadata folder has detailed metadata.xml files for both Excel workbooks....
The bathymetry of the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta affects the flow of water and sediment throughout the system and is a basic control on levee stability, habitat distribution, and water quality. Delta bathymetry is dynamic, responding to both natural forces and human activities. Assessment of future Delta conditions is aided by understanding how its bathymetry has changed in the past. This pilot study explores historic bathymetric change in the Delta. The earliest comprehensive surveys that covered a large portion of the Delta were conducted in the 1930s by the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey, the precursor to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. These historic surveys are compared to recent surveys...

Two large dams were removed from the Elwha River in Washington, starting in 2011 and ending in 2014. The Elwha and the Glines Canyon dams were located approximately 7 km and 20 km upstream, respectively, from the Elwha River's mouth on the Strait of Juan de Fuca. The dams trapped over 20 million cubic meters of sediment. Dam removal changed the river's sediment budget and water flow, which affected the river's morphology. This data release presents digital elevation models (DEMs), orthomosaic images, dam height measurements, sediment measurements and river streamgage data that were collected by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and U.S. Bureau of Reclamation (USBR) to support studies on morphodynamic and sediment...
The U.S. Geological Survey Pacific Coastal and Marine Science Center collected data to investigate sediment dynamics in the shallows of San Pablo Bay and sediment exchange between bay shallows and the tidal salt marsh in China Camp State Park in a series of deployments between December 2013 and June 2016. This data release includes two related groups of data sets. The first group, denoted by names starting with CHC, is from deployments with stations in the San Pablo Bay channel, shallows, and mudflats, and within China Camp marsh. The second, denoted by names starting with SP, is from deployments at a subset of the stations in the San Pablo Bay shallows, collected during intervals between the CHC deployments. Stations...
The National Hydrogeologic Grid (NHG) dataset includes a raster and vector representation of 1-km cells defining a uniform grid that encompasses the continental United States. The value of each cell of the raster dataset corresponds to the 1-km cell number defined as 'cellnum' in the attributes of the vector data. The NHG consists of 4,000 rows and 4,980 columns, numbered from the top left corner of the grid, to correspond to the traditional row and column numbering system of the MODFLOW groundwater-flow simulation code (Hughes and others, 2017; Langevin and others, 2017). The Albers projection was chosen for the NHG because of the capability to best preserve area, which is crucial in the computation of volume for...

Bed sediments were collected by the USGS Pacific Coastal and Marine Science Center (PCMSC) in two submerged agricultural tracts, Liberty Island and Little Holland Tract, in the northern Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta, California. Samples were analyzed for grain size distribution, bulk density, or both. Analyses were conducted using PCMSC sediment lab standard techniques (see “Process Step” in metadata). This effort was part of a large interdisciplinary study supported by the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation to investigate how shallow water habitats in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta function and whether they provide good habitat for native fish species, including the Delta smelt. Bed sediment properties, including grain...

This data release consists of two .csv files of inverted models of electrical resistivity created from the processed resistivity data in the accompanying two data releases: (Miller and Others, 2018) and (2018 Raw and Processed, in progress). During 2016, 17, and 18, the U.S. Geological Survey conducted continuous resistivity profiling along 15 rivers or lakes in the Mississippi Alluvial Plain of Mississippi, Arkansas, Louisiana, and Missouri to characterize streambed hydraulic conductivity values. These techniques characterize the near surface geomorphology of the streambed that controls the recharge to the alluvial aquifer. These data can be used to map changes in the lithology of the streambed and identify areas...

These datasets provide the locations of and groundwater-level altitudes from 273 wells that were used to construct a 2015 potentiometric contour surface of the Sparta-Memphis aquifer. Measurements were made from January through June 2015 and represent synoptic conditions. All wells were cased completely in and screened in the Sparta-Memphis aquifer. Groundwater-level data are also available from the USGS National Water Information System (U.S. Geological Survey, 2017). The groundwater-level change maps for the Sparta-Memphis aquifer are constructed as a point-to-point comparison with wells measured in both 2011 and 2013 and both 2013 and 2015. Wells not measured in both 2011 and 2013 and both 2013 and 2015 were...
This data set provides the supporting data for the publication "What Makes a First Magnitude Sping?--Global Uncertainty Analysis of a Speleogenesis Model to Gain Insight into Karst Spring Genesis". This publication documents a speleogenesis model that was used to generate karst networks. Morris Method Global Sensitivity Analysis (MM-GSA) is used to efficiently sample input parameters to define a potential karst network. The MM-GSA provides information about sensitivity of hydrologic and transport response metrics (e.g., peak flows, peak timing, mass flux) to evaluated input parameters (e.g. network density, proto-conduit length distribution). There were 390 models in the analysis, therefore one replicate is provided...
