This U.S. Geological Survey data release is a spreadsheet containing soil-profile measurements of ambient spring and fall water-potential and water-content conditions, and physical and chemical properties for four mine sites, Mohave County, Arizona, April and November 2018. The four mines sampled in both April and November were Kanab North (native soil and reclaimed soil), EZ2 (native soil), Arizona 1 (native soil), and Pinenut (native soil). These data were collected to characterize soil hydrologic conditions and properties in support of research being done to quantify water and metals transport in shallow soils at four semi-arid uranium mine sites at various stages of production on the north rim of the Grand Canyon.
This vector line dataset represents the lower Las Vegas Wash study area. Surface-water trace was digitized onscreen from Landsat8 and ESRI World Imagery. The trace is used in an accompanying surface-water study to evaluate discharge gains and losses at selected locations in the Lower Las Vegas Wash.

This data release presents point data associated with the geologic and geophysical maps of the Sierra Nevada Digital Earth Science Atlas led by the California Geological Survey and U.S. Geological Survey. Data include principal fact information for new gravity measurements collected by the U.S. Geological Survey from 2012 to 2023 and for existing gravity measurements compiled from 21 sources. Nearly 29,000 gravity measurements were processed to complete Bouguer and isostatic gravity anomalies to provide information on crustal structure, such as depth extent of plutons and arc terranes, and geometry of Cenozoic basins developed along the margins of the Sierra Nevada. Density and magnetic property measurements were...

The Assessment Unit is the fundamental unit used in the National Assessment Project for the assessment of undiscovered oil and gas resources. The Assessment Unit is defined within the context of the higher-level Total Petroleum System. The Assessment Unit is shown here as a geographic boundary interpreted, defined, and mapped by the geologist responsible for the province and incorporates a set of known or postulated oil and (or) gas accumulations sharing similar geologic, geographic, and temporal properties within the Total Petroleum System, such as source rock, timing, migration pathways, trapping mechanism, and hydrocarbon type. The Assessment Unit boundary is defined geologically as the limits of the geologic...

These orthophotos and digital surface model (DSM) were derived from low-altitude (approximately 92-m above ground surface) images collected from Unmanned Aerial System (UAS) flights over edge-of-field sites that are part of U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Great Lakes Restoration Initiative (GLRI) monitoring. The objective of this UAS photogrammetry data collection was to provide information on the tile-drain network in individual fields with the goal of understanding already observed patterns in runoff amount and water quality from these sites. A 3DR Solo quadcopter served as the flight vehicle, flights were pre-planned using Mission Planner, and flights were flown using Tower. Geospatial data were originally in WGS84...

The decline of the iconic monarch butterfly in North America has motivated research on the impacts of land use and land cover (LULC) change and climate variability on monarch habitat and population dynamics. We investigated spring and fall trends in LULC, milkweed and nectar resources over a 20-year period, and ~30 years of climate variables in Mexico and Texas, a key region supporting spring and fall migration during monarchs annual life cycle. We estimated a 2.9% decline in milkweed in Texas, but little to no change in Mexico. Fall and spring nectar resources declined <1% in both countries. Vegetation greenness increased in both the fall and spring in Mexico while the other climate variables, for both countries,...

These data were created to describe the causes of land cover change that occurred in the Lower Rio Grande (LRG) Valley and Alluvial Floodplain ecoregions of Texas for the time intervals of 2001 to 2006 and 2006 to 2011. The study area covers approximately 600,000 hectares at the southernmost tip of Texas and is one of the fastest growing regions in the United States. Some of the largest cities in the area include Brownsville and Harlingen, Texas. Two raster maps showing the causes of land change were created at a 30-meter resolution using automated and manual photo interpretation techniques. There were 26 categories of land change causes (for example, urban expansion or surficial mining) identified across the LRG...

Over the past 15 years Douglas County, NV has removed production wells in northern Carson Valley from use due to relatively high arsenic concentrations (Carl Ruschmeyer, January 2013, Douglas County Public Works Director, verbal communication). To maintain the supply of water to the public, the town of Minden has been providing water to Douglas County and Carson City. Due to the projected increases in municipal demand, water resource managers are concerned that increasing pumping rates from wells in Minden may change groundwater chemistry and degrade the resource by potentially drawing in arsenic enriched water. Naturally occurring arsenic is one of the most common contaminants in groundwater in the western United...
This U.S. Geological Survey data release consists of a tabular dataset containing stream temperature data. Data were collected every 12-hours from 15 sites in Soldier Meadows, Black Rock Desert - High Rock Canyon Emigrant Trails National Conservation Area, Nevada. The sites were established by the Bureau of Land Management - Winnemucca District Office in 2017. The data release includes tabular data of site names, date and time of temperature measurement, and stream temperature in degrees Celsius. The site locations are included below as a shapefile, exported from the National Water Information System (NWIS) Mapper. A site list can be accessed here: National Water Information System site list
This U.S. Geological Survey data release presents monthly evaporation estimates from Lake Mead, Nevada and Arizona. Data are updated approximately annually. The spreadsheet includes five worksheets: (1) Read_Me worksheet contains information relevant to understanding the data contained in the rest of the worksheets. (2) Monthly_EC_Met worksheet includes data measured at a land-based station (USGS site identification number 360500114465601) using primarily eddy covariance measurement methods: uncorrected evaporation, latent- and sensible-heat fluxes, net radiation, air temperature, wind speed, and relative humidity. Values are monthly averages computed by averaging daily values except as noted. Monthly values are...
