Data were collected as part of a study to identify sources of E. coli contamination at several beaches located in the Grand Calumet River Areas of Concern, located in northern Indiana on Lake Michigan. Water samples were collected at each site (Jeorse Park 1, Jeorse Park 2, Hammond East, Hammond West, Whihala East, and the Grand Calumet River) three times a week for thirteen weeks and analyzed for E. coli bacteria (an indicator bacteria for fecal contamination) and species-specific molecular markers (microbial source tracking, MST), including human (HF183, Mnif), gull (Gull2), and dog (DogBact). Presence of MST markers indicates a fecal source at that location associated with the target animal. Field conditions...

Water-withdrawal, water-use, and water-return information have been collected and compiled for each county in Georgia every 5 years since 1980 using data obtained from various Federal, State, private agencies, and on-line sources. For 2015, water use, water withdrawal, and water returns were estimated for each county in Georgia. Off-stream water use in 2015 is estimated for the categories of domestic use, commercial use, industrial use processing, mining use, irrigation use (subdivided into crop and golf course irrigation), livestock, aquaculture, and thermoelectric power cooling. Water-use trends from 1985-2015 have also been compiled for each water-planning region in Georgia.

We characterized coastal wetland responses to flooding stress by measuring vegetation cover, wetland elevation and water elevation in healthy and degrading wetlands dominated by Spartina patens. Wetland elevation was measured using real-time kinematic survey methods. Vegetation cover was determined by visual estimation methods, and water elevation was measured using in situ continuous recorders. In addition to these local-scale responses, we also measured landscape-scale patterns of land and water aggregation or fragmentation using remotely sensed data (Jones et al., 2018). This dataset describes water-quality data measured from the parking lot influent and underdrain and overflow effluent from the porous asphalt, pervious concrete, and permeable interlocking concrete paver test plots in Madison, Wisconsin, USA. Data include precipitation statistics; influent, overflow, and underdrain volumes; and concentrations and loads of total and dissolved forms of solids, nutrients, chloride, metals, and bacteria. Samples were collected in September 2016 through July 2018. These data are interpreted in the Journal of Environmental Management.

Continuous monitoring and discrete water-quality sampling were coupled in a karst aquifer to assess drivers and timescales of water-quality change. Water-quality data included environmental tracers of groundwater age (tritium [3H], tritiogenic helium-3 [3He-trit], sulfur hexafluoride [SF6], carbon-14 [14C], and radiogenic helium-4 [4He-rad]). In Hawai‘i and other oceanic islands with few native land mammals, black rats (Rattus rattus) are among the most damaging invasive vertebrate species to native forest bird populations and habitats, due to their arboreal behavior and generalist foraging habitats and habitat use. We evaluated the nesting response of Hawai‘i ‘Elepaio (Chasiempis sandwichensis; Monarchidae), a generalist insectivore, to the removal of black rats using rodenticide in a before-after-control-impact study in high and low, mesic montane habitat recovering from long-term damage from introduced ungulates and weeds. This Data Release is a compilation of existing water-quality data associated with groundwater resources originating from abandoned underground coal mines in West Virginia. Data were compiled from multiple sources for the purpose of understanding the suitability of groundwater from abandoned underground coal mines for public supply, industrial, agricultural, and other uses. This compilation includes data collected for multiple individual studies conducted from July 13, 1973 through September 7, 2016. A hydrologic study involving the investigation of groundwater-surface water interactions along Ellerbe Creek, a major tributary to upper Falls Lake, was conducted in order to determine if groundwater is a likely source of nitrate input to the stream. Groundwater-surface water interactions were characterized by synoptic streamflow measurements, groundwater-level monitoring, hydrograph-separation methods and a continuous streambed temperature survey to aid in the collection and interpretation of water-quality samples along the stream.

The Omnibus Public Land Management Act of 2009 (Public Law 111-11) was passed into law on March 30, 2009. Sub-title F of the law, also known as the SECURE (Science and Engineering to Comprehensively Understand and Responsibly Enhance) Water Act, calls for the establishment of a “national water availability and use assessment program” in the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). Earthquake-triggered ground-failure, such as landsliding and liquefaction, can contribute significantly to losses, but our current ability to accurately include them in earthquake hazard analyses is limited. The development of robust and transportable models requires access to numerous inventories of ground failure triggered by earthquakes that span a broad range of terrains, shaking characteristics, and climates. We present an openly accessible, centralized earthquake-triggered ground-failure inventory repository in the form of a ScienceBase Community to provide open access to these data, and help accelerate progress. This dataset includes ten years of emissions and sequestration estimates (2005-2014) in two separate tables, 1) the combustion and extraction of fossil fuels on Federal lands and 2) processes from the ecosystems on those Federal lands. The fossil fuel related estimates include the greenhouse gases carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), and nitrous oxide (N2O), and the ecosystems estimates include only CO2. The data for this release is an ASCII file containing grid points of Cascadia P- and S-wave velocity models. The model volume was developed to include the Cascadia subduction zone for purposes of ground motion simulation. The description of the model and background of its development is provided in the associated Open-File Report. This data release includes geodetic time series from high-rate GPS instruments recording 4 earthquakes co-seismically in the near-field – the 2010 Maule, Chile earthquake; the 2012 Nicoya, Costa Rica earthquake; the 2014 Iquique, Chile earthquake; and the 2015 Gorkha, Nepal earthquake. For each earthquake, data (sac files, 1 Hz sampling, ~2-3 minutes around the earthquake origin time) are included in a separate folder. Each sac file provides a time series of ground displacement from the earthquake as recorded at that station. The location of each station is listed in the relevant earthquake file in the “_station_info” folder.
