This dataset contains Sr:Ca of water and fin ray samples of native fish to evaluate upstream fish passage through a navigation lock in the Des Plaines River (Brandon Roads Lock and Dam). Fin ray samples from several native fish taxa (catostomids, ictalurids, centrarchids, and lepisosteids) were collected in two river reaches downstream of Brandon Roads Lock and Dam, and in a river reach upstream of Brandon Roads Lock and Dam. Fin ray Sr:Ca derived from microchemistry analyses of fin ray materials from a laser ablation transect is included as both edge values and entire transect (including edge). Edge values of Sr:Ca were used to characterize chemical signatures of residency for each of the rivers and make comparisons...

In 2016, for the first time, an abundance of age-0 silver carp (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix) were captured at several sites upstream of Lock and Dam 19 on the Upper Mississippi River near Keokuk, Iowa. These data were collected in an attempt to determine the early life environments and frequency and timing of the reproductive events that led to a large year class of age-0 silver carp. This information is important for informing decisions about control measures. We sampled these fish to determine age (days) and early life environments using their otoliths. Sampled age-0 silver carp were collected from navigation Pools 18 and 19 from July–October 2016 using a variety of sampling gears. We aged these fish by counting...

This data release provides semiquantitative mineralogy results from X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses of mineral scales from The Geysers vapor-dominated geothermal field in California. The mineral species and their abundances are reported in weight percent and values have been normalized to total 100 percent for each sample. The X-ray diffraction results show that the mineral samples from the wellheads are primarily composed of ammonium (NH4+) sulfate minerals and sassolite B(OH)3, whereas sulfide minerals such as cinnabar and pyrite are the most abundant minerals observed in the power plants. Mineral scales vary along the steam flow path, from the wellhead to power plants. Relatively abundant iron oxide and iron...

The dimensions of each organism were measured with a Whipple grid and the biovolume was estimated using the simplest geometric shape (e.g., cylinder, cone, sphere, etc.) that best fit the shape of each taxon. Shapes were assigned according to Hillebrand et al. (1999). Biovolume was calculated for the first five organisms/counting units of each taxon identified in a sample. The average biovolume was then used to calculate total biovolume of each taxon in the sample.

The risk of lampricide applications (such as 4-Nitro-3-(trifluoromethyl)phenol, TFM) to non-target fauna continues to be a concern within the Great Lakes Fishery Commission sea lamprey control program, especially among imperiled aquatic species—such as native freshwater mussels. The Grand River (Ohio) is routinely treated for larval sea lampreys (Petromyzon marinus) and this river contains populations of the Round Hickorynut mussel (Obovaria subrotunda) which was Federally listed in 2023. Given the spatial overlap between areas treated with TFM and extant populations of O. subrotunda, information on its sensitivity to TFM is needed. This dataset was used to evaluate the acute toxicity of TFM to O. olivaria and O....

This is the mortality and water quality data for 2 efficacy trials of medicated feed for controlling mortality in Walleye (Sander vitreus) due to motile aeromonad infections. Top-coated feed with florfenicol or oxytetracycline or control feed were administered in both trials to fingerling walleye. Daily mortality counts and water quality measurements for dissolved oxygen, pH, temperature are included as csv files.

Metals are used in primary producer metabolic pathways, such as photosynthesis and the acquisition of macronutrients nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P), yet we often do not know their potential as limiting nutrients in freshwaters. In the Great Lakes, metals have sometimes been identified as limiting the acquisition of macronutrients, mostly in off-shore waters that are relatively isolated from tributary inputs and sediment interactions. We hypothesized that another area where metals might be important was within harmful algal blooms (HABs). Harmful algal blooms are more likely to occur where N and P loads are elevated due to human activities, but short-term growth assays still often find summer bloom communities are...

The raw data files within the “Airborne electromagnetic, magnetic, and radiometric surveys of the Mississippi Alluvial Plain and Chicot Aquifer System, March 2018 and May - August 2021: Minimally Processed (Raw) Data” child item are broken up according to the three main objectives of these surveys: River surveys along the thalweg of major rivers within the MAP and the Chicot Aquifer extents; Levee surveys along the Mississippi and Arkansas rivers from Cairo, IL to Baton Rouge, LA and northwest from the confluence of the Mississippi and Arkansas rivers to Pine Bluff, AR; and gridded products mainly focused on gravel bars within the Mississippi River from Helena, MS to the confluence with the Arkansas River. The...
