A soil-water balance model (SWB) was developed to estimate potential recharge and surface runoff for portions of the St. Louis River drainage basin, northeast Minnesota, for the period 1995 through 2010. The model was used in the creation of St. Louis River streamflow distribution maps, as part of the associated report, U.S. Geological Survey Scientific Investigations Map 2017-3390 (http://dx.doi.org/10.3133/SIM20173390). This SWB model was calibrated using three independent hydrograph separation models: PART, Hysep-fixed, and Hysep-sliding method. The basic framework for this model was the statewide Minnesota SWB potential recharge model, described, calibrated, and documented as part of U.S. Geological Survey Scientific...

Matchett and Fleskes (2018) evaluated availability of wetland and agricultural habitats used by waterbirds overwintering in the Central Valley of California under 17 scenarios of projected climate, urbanization, and water supply management (for more information about scenarios see scenario description and Table 1 in Matchett and Fleskes [2018]). Central Valley waterbird habitats investigated in this research included managed flooded wetlands and croplands and dry cropland habitats. Flooded cropland habitats are defined as winter-flooded rice, winter-flooded corn, and other winter-flooded cropland (in Tulare basin). Flooded wetlands are defined as summer-irrigated seasonal wetland, seasonal wetland that is not summer...

These data were collected using a 2 mHz TRDI StreamPro acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP) in 2012 and a 1200 kHz Rio Grande ADCP in 2013, both deployed from a moving boat. The data were georeferenced with a Hemisphere Crescent A100 differential Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver with submeter accuracy. The data have been depth-averaged over the entire measured portion of the water column and temporally averaged over 30-second intervals to reduce noise. These data were collected as a part of a combined field campaign with Purdue University which included simultaneous egg and larvae sampling. Data were processed using the Velocity Mapping Toolbox (Parsons and others, 2013). Any data assigned a value of...

A Turner Designs C3 submersible fluorometer was deployed in the Brandon Road Lock chamber (BRLD) near Rockdale, Illinois, to measure Rhodamine WT dye concentrations during a U.S. Geological Survey dye study conducted on October 20, 2015. The lock chamber at BRLD was dyed with 4 liters of Rhodamine WT dye during a routine filling procedure. Measurements of dye concentration profiles were collected at 15 stations in the lock chamber and capture the three-dimensional distribution of the dye in the chamber after filling, after the lock was emptied, and after a 17-minute flushing operation of the lock. A series of five taglines and rope and pulley systems were used to position the fluorometer at each station to avoid...
Water velocities were measured in the Illinois and Des Plaines Rivers using a Teledyne Rio Grande 1200 kHz acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP). ADCP data were collected in reciprocal pairs along cross-sections and along approximately streamwise-oriented lines between cross sections at the following locations: (1) the confluence of the Fox River and the Illinois River near Ottawa, IL on November 4, 2015 (2) immediately downstream of Starved Rock Lock and Dam on the Illinois River near Utica, IL on May 22, 2015 (3) the Dresden Island Pool of the Des Plaines River on July 31 – August 1, 2013 (4) the Marseilles Pool of the Illinois River on May 14-15, 2013 and May 28, 2013 The WinRiverII ASCII output file and...

Newberry Volcano, one of the largest Quaternary volcanoes in the conterminous United States, is a broad shield-shaped volcano measuring 60 km north-south by 30 km east-west with a maximum elevation of more than 2 km above sea level. It is the product of deposits from thousands of eruptions, including at least 25 in (approximately) the last 12,000 years (the Holocene Epoch). Newberry Volcano has erupted as recently as 1,300 years ago, but isotopic ages indicate that the volcano began its growth as early as 0.6 million years ago. Such a long eruptive history together with recent activity suggests that Newberry Volcano is likely to erupt in the future. This DEM (digital elevation model) of Newberry Volcano contributes...

Post-fire rehabilitation seeding in the U.S. Intermountain West, primarily conducted by the Bureau of Land Management, is designed to reduce the risk of erosion and weed invasion while increasing desirable plant cover. Seeding effectiveness is typically monitored for three years following treatment, after which a closeout report is prepared. We evaluated 220 third-year closeout reports describing 214 aerial and 113 drill seedings implemented after wildfires from 2001 through 2006. Each treatment was assigned a qualitative success rating of good, fair, poor, or failure based on information in the reports. Seeding success varied by both treatment (aerial or drill) and year. Aerial seedings were rated 13.6% good, 18.3%...

We studied the short-term effects of full and partial livestock grazing exclosures on Columbia Spotted Frog (CSF; Rana luteiventris) populations using a controlled manipulative field experiment with pre- and post-treatment data. This dataset includes vegetation data collected 2002-2010 and 2013 at 94 lakes and ponds in and around the Blue Mountains in eastern Oregon. Data collection followed standardized survey protocols and included annual oviposition surveys and vegetation surveys. These data allowed for quantification of CSF breeding as related to vegetation within and outside of grazing exclosures at each site.

A study examining the sources and ages of fine-grained bed material (<0.063 mm) was conducted for 99 sites in the USGS NAWQA Midwest Stream Quality Assessment (MSQA) during the summer of 2014, including 15 suspended sediment and 5 cropland top soil samples. Bed material samples were analyzed for radionuclides (7Be, 210Pbex, 137Cs) and pesticides (bifenthrin and DDE); suspended sediment for radionuclides (7Be, 210Pbex, 137Cs): and cropland top soil was analyzed for 210Pbex and 137Cs. Data set includes only those data specifically discussed in a Journal of Environmental Management entitled, Sources and ages of fine-grained sediment to streams using fallout radionuclides in the Midwestern United States, by Allen C....

Greater sage-grouse ( Centrocercus urophasianus; hereinafter, sage-grouse) are a sagebrush obligate species that has declined concomitantly with the loss and fragmentation of sagebrush ecosystems across most of its geographical range. The species has been considered for listing under the federal Endangered Species Act multiple times, and was most recently ruled to not warrant protection as of September 2015. Nevertheless, the species faces threats from increasing wildfire frequency and changing climate, which are identified frequently as two environmental drivers contributing to declines of sage-grouse populations. To help inform a threat assessment within the Great Basin for listing sage-grouse in 2015 under the...

Landslide-generated tsunamis pose significant hazards, but developing models to assess these hazards presents unique challenges. George and others (2017) present a new methodology in which a depth-averaged two-phase landslide model (D-Claw) is used to simulate all stages of landslide dynamics and subsequent tsunami generation, propagation, and inundation. Because the model describes the evolution of solid and fluid volume fractions, it treats both landslides and tsunamis as special cases of a more general class of phenomena. Therefore, the landslide and tsunami can be seamlessly and efficiently simulated as a single-layer continuum with evolving solid-grain concentrations, and with wave generation via mass displacement...

Digital elevation models of the SR530 Landslide, created using structure from motion photogrammetry. These surveys were performed at irregular intervals between July 1, 2014 and July 7, 2015. Due to the photogrammetric methods used to collect these surveys, there may be substantial artifacts near the edges of the surveys, in areas of vegetation, or over extents of bare water, and should be used with caution in these areas. Details of the collection and processing of these data are provides in the overview metadata file.

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Fort Collins Science Center created a national data set of the footprint area of solar arrays for the Bureau of Land Management’s National Operations Center. We identified potential solar facility locations for the conterminous U.S. using the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) utility-scale facilities data from 2015. The footprint area of each solar array was digitized on-screen using true color aerial imagery from the most recently available National Agriculture Imagery Program (NAIP) for each state (NAIP 2013-2015). We used supplementary ESRI basemap imagery accessed via ArcGIS to verify locations of arrays observed in NAIP imagery. Arrays separated by more than 30 meters...

Lake Erie Biological Station (LEBS), located in Sandusky, Ohio, is a field station of the USGS Great Lakes Science Center (GLSC). LEBS is the primary federal agency for applied fisheries science excellence in Lake Erie. Since 2004, LEBS has participated in a collaborative, multiagency effort to assess forage fish populations in the western basin of Lake Erie. Assessing the distribution and abundance of both predator and prey (forage) fish species is a cornerstone of ecosystem-based based fishery management, and supports decision making that considers food-web interactions. The objectives of this survey were to provide estimates of densities of key forage and predator species in the western basin of Lake Erie, to...

Snow and ice-covered Mount Baker in northern Washington, is the highest peak in the North Cascades (3,286 meters or 10,781 feet) and the northernmost volcano in the conterminous United States. It is the only U.S. volcano in the Cascade Range that has been affected by both alpine and continental glaciation. The stratovolcano is composed mainly of andesite lava flows and breccias formed prior to the most recent major glaciation (Fraser Glaciation), which occurred between about 25,000 and 10,000 years ago. The most recent major eruption at Mount Baker (6,700 years ago) was accompanied by a major flank-collapse event that caused lahars to rush down the Nooksack River and then eastward into Baker Lake. In 1975-76, Sherman...
