These tables document grain-size distributions of sediment collected as part of a study on the geomorphic impacts of the March 2014 State Route 530 Landslide near Oso, Washington. This includes samples of material from the landslide deposit itself, covering a range of distinct facies present in the landslide, and samples of sand and gravel at various locations along the North Fork Stillaguamish River both upstream and downstream of the landslide. Grain size distributions of landslide material were distinguished between outwash material, till, and lacustrine material, distinct facies all present in the landslide deposit. Material coarser than 4-16 mm (sample dependent) was sieved and weighed in the field, and fine...

Brackish groundwater (BGW), defined for this assessment as having a dissolved-solids concentration between 1,000 and 10,000 milligrams per liter, is an unconventional source of water that may offer a partial solution to current (2016) and future water challenges. In support of the National Water Census, the U.S. Geological Survey has completed a BGW assessment to gain a better understanding of the occurrence and characteristics of BGW resources of the United States as an alternative source of water. Analyses completed as part of this assessment relied on previously collected data from multiple sources, and no new data were collected. One of the most important contributions of this assessment was the creation of...

The U.S. Geological Survey, in cooperation with the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality, has quantified several measures of rating stability and the frequency and magnitude of changes to ratings through time for 174 real-time continuous streamgages active in Virginia as of September 30, 2013. Alternative flow (AltFlow) tables were developed as a method of estimating provisional flow data. They were constructed for periods with complete records of shifts and ratings between October 1, 1990 and September 30, 2013. Alternate flows consist of Qsame, the flow value from the shifted rating table used to compute the daily flow value at the time of the most recent flow measurement that corresponds to the gage height...
The United States Geological Survey’s (USGS) SPAtially Referenced Regressions On Watershed attributes (SPARROW) model was developed to aid in the interpretation of monitoring data and simulate water-quality conditions in streams across large spatial scales. SPARROW is a hybrid empirical/process-based mass balance model that can be used to estimate the major sources and environmental factors that affect the long-term supply, transport, and fate of contaminants in streams. The spatially explicit model structure is defined by a river reach network coupled with contributing catchments. The model is calibrated by statistically relating watershed sources and transport-related properties to monitoring-based streamflow...
The water-quality data available here has been collected as part of a collaborative monitoring project between the US Geological Survey, Yukon River Inter-Tribal Watershed Council, and Yukon River Basin communities known as the Indigenous Observation Network. Since 2006 the USGS National Research Program (NRP) and Yukon River Inter-Tribal Watershed Council (YRITWC) have been partnering to collect water-quality samples from the Yukon River and tributaries with the assistance of trained community members living in the Yukon River Basin. The YRITWC provides support for this project through sample collection, sample processing and shipment logistics with communities and to the USGS. The USGS provides water analysis...
Streamflow and phosphorus concentrations were monitored in the Assabet River in central Massachusetts in order to evaluate concentrations and loads in the river before, during, and after changes in the amount of total phosphorus that was discharged to the river from three wastewater-treatment plants. At four locations the U.S. Geological Survey collected weekly flow-proportional, composite samples of water from the Assabet River for analysis of concentrations of total phosphorus and orthophosphate. Streamflow and concentration data were used to estimate total phosphorus and orthophosphate loads in the river and compare them with total phosphorus load outputs from three wastewater-treatment plants. Data were collected...

As part of the Hurricane Sandy Science Plan, the U.S. Geological Survey is expanding National Assessment of Coastal Change Hazards and forecast products to coastal wetlands. The intent is to provide federal, state, and local managers with tools to estimate the vulnerability of coastal wetlands to various factors and to evaluate their ecosystem service potential. For this purpose, the response and resilience of coastal wetlands to physical factors need to be assessed in terms of the ensuing change to their vulnerability and ecosystem services. Edwin B. Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge (EBFNWR), New Jersey, was selected as a pilot study area. As part of this data synthesis effort, hydrodynamic and sediment transport...
Monitoring the chloride (Cl) flux in the major rivers draining Yellowstone National Park (YNP) provides a holistic view of the thermal output from the underlying magma reservoir, and abrupt fluctuations in the Cl flux may signify changes in hydrothermal activity. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and the National Park Service (NPS) have collaborated on Cl flux monitoring of the major rivers since the 1970s. In the past, researchers collected water samples from the major rivers in YNP, but funding restrictions, winter conditions, and the great distances between sites limited the number of samples collected annually. Beginning in 2010, specific conductance, which is relatively easy to measure and can be automated,...
This data release is comprised of a set of six time travel map shapefiles (two tsunami evacuation zones and three travel times) and three population exposure by travel time tables (residents, employees, and hotel visitors). The travel time map was generated using the Pedestrian Evacuation Analyst model from the USGS (https://geography.wr.usgs.gov/science/vulnerability/tools.html). The travel time analysis uses ESRI's Path Distance tool to find the shortest distance across a cost surface from any point in the hazard zone to a safe zone. This cost analysis considers the direction of movement and assigns a higher cost to steeper slopes, based on a table contained within the model. The analysis also adds in the energy...

This release contains geophysical data from the Kuparuk aufeis associated with the manuscript "Seasonal thaw dynamics of an aufeis feature inferred from surface geophysical methods." Data were collected in two campaigns in September 2016 and April 2017 with the purpose of investigating freeze-thaw dynamics below the aufeis feature during maximally frozen and maximally thawed conditions. Ground penetrating radar common offset data from both campaigns (160MHz and 80MHz) is presented, including interpreted depths to interfaces (permafrost, ice-frozen ground interface, and talik surface). Surface nuclear magnetic resonance data and inverse results are also included from April 2017 as well as interpreted talik thicknesses....
Nutrient and phytoplankton data indicate poor environmental health in four oxbow lakes in central Louisiana suggesting that long-term agriculture practices and increases in shoreline development have accelerated eutrophication. Surface-water quality and phytoplankton indicators of eutrophication were examined at Lake Bruin, Lake St. John, Lake St. Joseph, and False River Lake along an eutrophication gradient. These oxbow lakes are cut-off meanders of the Mississippi River that do not receive overbank flow from the river due to the levee system built in the early twentieth century. Oxbows have formed at various times in the last few hundred years as the Mississippi River carves a more efficient hydrologic route to...
Water samples were collected by the USGS National Water Quality Program (NWQP) Southeastern Stream Quality Assessment (SESQA) from 76 perennial, wadeable (less than 10 m width and 1 m depth at base-flow) headwater stream sites in watersheds with varying degrees of urban land use in four states. Dataset includes sample site locations and information, water sample nutrient concentrations and statistics analyses, and corresponding watershed land-use-land-cover data and data dictionary.

In September 2017, Hurricane Maria caused widespread landsliding throughout mountainous regions of Puerto Rico. Nearly all landslides mobilized as debris flows (Bessette-Kirton et al., 2019), but herein, we simply use the term “landslides” when describing all types of slope failures that occurred during Hurricane Maria. To examine the extent and physical characteristics of landslides in severely impacted areas (defined as having high landslide density (>25 landslides/km2) by Bessette-Kirton et al., 2017, 2019), we mapped individual landslides at scales between 1:600 and 1:1,000 in four 2.5 km2 study areas in the Mayagüez/Añasco/Las Marías (LAM1), Las Marías/Lares (LAM2), Naranjito (NAR), and Utuado (UTU) municipalities....

This data release contains compiled groundwater withdrawal data from 1980 to 2018 for the Hueco Bolson, Mesilla Basin, and the Rio Grande alluvium in El Paso and Hudspeth Counties, Texas. Most groundwater withdrawal volumes were distributed to wells and separated into water-use categories. The data were compiled, distributed, and categorized as part of the U.S. Geological Survey’s involvement in the Transboundary Aquifer Assessment Program. The Transboundary Aquifer Assessment Act was originally signed into Public Law 109-448 by the 109th United States Congress in 2006. This law directed the Secretary of Interior to establish a U.S.-Mexico Transboundary Aquifer Assessment Program (TAAP) to systematically assess...
