This data release provides digital flight line data for a high-resolution airborne magnetic and radiometric survey over Charleston, South Carolina and the surrounding region. These data were collected to better understand earthquake hazards in the Charleston seismic zone by imaging structural features in the crystalline basement and to image heavy mineral sands containing titanium, zirconium, and rare earth elements using radiometric data (gamma spectrometry), which is sensitive to thorium in monazite. Shallow soil conductivity was mapped in the San Luis Valley, Colorado, using the DualEM421 electromagnetic sensor in March 2020. Data were acquired by towing the DualEM421 sensor on a wheeled cart behind an all-terrain vehicle, with the sensor at a height of 0.457 m above the ground surface. Approximately 62 line-kilometers of data were acquired over an area of nearly 1.5 square kilometers, with 20 m separation between survey lines. MethodsStudy area: Our initial study area included the entire globe. We began with a seamless grid of cells with a resolution of 0.5 degrees (i.e., ~50 km at the equator). Next, we created polylines representing coastlines using SRTM (Shuttle Radar Topographic Mission) v4.1 global digital elevation model data at a resolution of 250 m (Reuter et al. 2007). We used these coastline polylines to identify and retain cells that intersected the coast. We excluded 192,227 cells that did not intersect the coast. This is a coverage of surface and Federal mineral ownership in the Powder River Basin area, Montana and Wyoming. This coverage is the combination of several ARC/INFO coverages and MOSS format files that were collected from the BLM, reformatted as needed, modified, and/or created by the USGS from hard copy BLM 1:100,000-scale surface and mineral management status maps. The Powder River Basin has the largest in-place coal resources of any field in the contiguous U.S. (Keystone, 1997), and produces over one-fourth of the Nation's total coal production (The Mining Record, 1997). In the Powder River Basin, very little of the surface is Federal land, yet almost all of the coal is Federally owned.
The USGS Central Region Energy Team assesses oil and gas resources of the United States. The onshore and State water areas of the United States comprise 71 provinces. Within these provinces, Total Petroleum Systems are defined and Assessment Units are defined and assessed. The base of the Pittsburgh Coal bed and its stratigraphically (non-coal) equivalent horizon is used to subdivide Upper Pennsylvanian Series strata into the overlying Monongahela Group and the underlying Conemaugh Group in the Appalachian Basin coal region. This dataset depicts areas in which Pittsburgh coal resources were calculated and was obtained largely from published maps. Because different coal thickness criteria were used to delineate the line denoting known resources in Ohio versus West Virginia, an offset is observed at the State boundaries.
