This USGS Data Release supports USGS Scientific Investigations Report (SIR) 2017-5079. Following is the abstract from SIR 2017-5079: This report documents methodology and results of a study to evaluate groundwater discharge by evapotranspiration (GWET) in sparsely vegetated areas of Amargosa Desert and improve understanding of hydrologic-continuum processes controlling groundwater discharge. Evapotranspiration and GWET rates were computed and characterized at three sites over 2 years using a combination of micrometeorological, unsaturated zone, and stable-isotope measurements. One site (Amargosa Flat Shallow [AFS]) was in a sparse and isolated area of saltgrass (Distichlis spicata) where the depth to groundwater...

Here we present an inventory of remotely and field-observed landslides triggered by 2019-2020 Puerto Rico earthquake sequence. The inventory was mapped using pre- and post-event satellite imagery (PR_landslide_inventory_imagery.csv), an extensive collection of field observations (https://doi.org/10.5066/P96QNFMB) and using pre-earthquake lidar as guidance for mapping polygons with more precise locations and geometries (2015 - 2017 USGS Lidar DEM: Puerto Rico dataset). The inventory consists of a shapefile of 309 polygons (PR_landslide_inventory_pts.shp) outlining the source area and deposits together. It also includes a point inventory (PR_landslide_inventory_pts.shp) marking 170 individual displaced boulders that...
Summary: This directory contains a second version of the mosaics of the 2-dimensional (2D) surface strain fields of the 2019 Mw7.1 and Mw6.4 Ridgecrest earthquakes derived from optical correlation. These results are derived through a modification to the inversion approach described in Barnhart et al. 2020 (Nature Geoscience) wherein we remove the UTM reference frame when building the Green’s function that is incorporated into the inversion for the displacement gradient tensor. The removal of the reference frame has the effect of improving the condition number of the Green’s function and making the inversion more stable. The mosaics are in UTM Zone 11N coordinates with 10m spatial resolution. Each file is in units...

This dataset provides aqueous nitrate+nitrite, aqueous manganese, aqueous iron, and total sulfate measurements in groundwater samples from 254 newly constructed private residential wells between 2014 and 2016. The study focuses on three geologically distinct regions of Minnesota: central, northwest, and northeast. These study regions were chosen due to their prevalent elevated As concentrations in drinking water. Each of the 254 wells were sampled in three rounds by the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH). The timing of the three sampling rounds was (1) immediately or shortly after well construction (round 1); (2) 3-6 months after initial sample collection (round 2); and (3) 12 months after initial sample collection...

Large numerical grid used for finite element and finite volume analysis of induced seismicity in Paradox Basin. The grid construction used the boundaries of three sub-horizontal surfaces; the topography, and the top and bottom of the production formation is determined from drilling and seismic reflection profiling, yielding the surface topography and thickness variations in these data throughout the domain. The cell dimensions in the north and east directions are 200 m and the horizontal gridlines are oriented north-south and east-west. There are 245 elements in the east west direction, 241 elements in the north south direction, and 31 elements in the vertical, extending from the surface to 15 km depth. The grid...

We monitored displacement of the Slumgullion landslide located in Hinsdale County, Colorado. We measured displacement at the ground surface between 12 August 2011 and 10 October 2018, and in the subsurface between 4 September 2016 and 7 December 2016. Both types of data were acquired at irregular time intervals. Displacement at the ground surface was measured at locations within the upper, middle, and lower parts of the landslide using electronic cable extension transducers (extensometers) with stated ±0.7 mm accuracy (Extensometer_data.csv). Subsurface displacement was measured near the middle of the landslide using a 16-sensor array of 30.48-cm-long tilt sensors (inclinometer) installed within a PVC-cased borehole....

In this study, we develop urban ecosystem accounts in the U.S., using the System of Environmental-Economic Accounting Experimental Ecosystem Accounting (SEEA EEA) framework. Most ecosystem accounts focus on regional and national scales, which are appropriate for many ecosystem services. However, ecosystems provide substantial services in cities, improving quality of life and contributing to resiliency for substantial parts of the population. Our models estimate energy savings for indoor cooling resulting from heat mitigated by trees and rainfall intercepted by trees. Both models cover major cities in the contiguous U.S. and report the results through physical supply and use tables for multiple accounting periods...

The data set consists of evapotranspiration measurements made at the USGS Dead River forested wetland climate station beginning November 21, 2009 and ending February 29, 2016. Annual ET rates corrected to a near-surface energy-budget varied from 1448 mm (2012) to 1614 mm (2010). The eddy-covariance method was used, with high-frequency sensors installed above the forest canopy to measure sensible and latent heat fluxes. Ancillary meteorological data are also included in the data set: net radiation, soil temperature and moisture, air temperature, relative humidity, wind speed and direction, rainfall, and ground-water levels. Data were collected at 30-minute resolution, with evapotranspiration corrected to the near-surface...

The U.S. Geological Survey, in cooperation with the Puerto Rico Department of Natural and Environmental Resources, completed a study to determine whether a relation exists between the extent of forest cover and the magnitude of base flow at two sets of paired drainage basins in the highlands of the municipalities of Adjuntas and Utuado within the mountainous interior of Puerto Rico. One set of paired basins includes the Río Guaónica and Río Tanamá, both tributaries of the Río Grande de Arecibo. The other set includes two smaller basins in the drainage basin of the Río Coabey, which is a tributary of the Río Tanamá. The paired basins in each set have similar rainfall patterns, geologic substrate, and aspect; the...
