Assessing the distribution and abundance of both predator and prey (forage) fish species is a cornerstone of ecosystem-based fishery management and supports decision making that considers food-web interactions. In support of binational Great Lakes fishery management, the objectives of this survey were to: provide estimates of densities of key forage and predator species in the western basin of Lake Erie, to assess seasonal and spatial distributions of fishes in tandem with water quality information, and to assess year class strength. A systematic grid sampling approach with 41 stations was sampled via bottom trawl during June (Spring) and September (Autumn), starting in 2013. This data release adds 2023 data to...
This data set, compiled by the USGS Lake Erie Biological Station, provides near-bottom measurements of temperature and dissolved oxygen for the Central Basin of Lake Erie. Data were recorded by self-contained environmental data loggers (PME, Inc., MiniDOT data loggers). The data loggers were deployed to collect data during August 2021 through November 2022 to better understand how hypoxia develops and influences fish habitat quality during lake stratification. The data loggers were deployed on acoustic telemetry receivers in a network designed to record tagged fish movements (Great Lakes Acoustic Telemetry Observation System, GLATOS). Additional years of data collection are planned, and data release will be updated...

Data were recorded by self-contained environmental data loggers (PME, Inc., MiniDOT data loggers). These data describe delivery of novel gene silencing agents (GSAs) to leaf tissue of the invasive common reed Phragmites australis ssp. australis using cell penetrating peptides (CPPs). These CPPs were tested for their ability to infiltrate P. australis leaf tissue using confocal microscopy. In addition, a series of novel gene silencing agents targeting a putative phytoene desaturase (PDS) gene were developed including twelve antisense oligonucleotides (ASOs), five artificial microRNAs (amiRNAs), and amiRNA-expressing plasmids and a cassette. GSAs were applied to living P. australis plants in conjunction with cell penetrating peptides and an infiltration medium at multiple charge ratios and application frequencies....

These datasets represent USGS-led coastal wetland vegetation survey and mapping efforts at Metzger Marsh, part of the Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge (Ohio, USA) along the coast of western Lake Erie between 1994 and 2022. Vegetation quadrat data provide percent cover estimates per sampling quadrat and overall mean percent cover (MPC) values per species by vegetation type from 1994, and 1996-2010. Vegetation mapping (a.k.a., "photointerpretation") geospatial datasets provide full site cover visualizations and feature class information by vegetation type from 1994,1996-2002, and 2022.

This data release contains soil and vegetation data collected along a post glacial chronosequence associated with populations of oriental bittersweet (Celastrus orbiculatus) at the Indiana Dunes National Park. The post glacial chronosequence includes sand dunes and moraines, representing a successional gradient from woodland transition, to oak savanna, woodland and forest, to oak hickory forests on the Lake Border Moraine. Soil samples were collected from August 24, 2017 to September 1, 2017; vegetation cover data (percent cover by species) were collected from 1/4-meter squared plots (0.5 by 0.5 m) where the soil samples were taken. DNA extracted from soil and rhizosphere samples were analyzed for bacterial communities...

Cisco (Coregonus artedi) have been extirpated from Lake Erie since the 1960s, but they once supported one of the largest Laurentian Great Lakes fisheries. Reintroduction may be beneficial to the Lake Erie fishery, but impediments for re-establishment are not fully understood. This data set aimed to use acoustic telemetry to investigate the thermal habitat use and survival of hatchery-reared adult Cisco in Lake Erie. Fish were experimentally released (n=50 per site) at two locations: near Dunkirk, New York, and Huron, Ohio. Fish were tracked using the Great Lakes Acoustic Telemetry Observation System (GLATOS).

The data associated with the following data release were collected between 2016 and 2017 at three locations on Lake Michigan: Racine, WI; Chicago, IL; and East Chicago, IN. Individual water samples were collected one day a week for ten weeks between June and August. Samples were collected from eight specific sites made up of two river and six shoreline type environments. Sampling was completed at sites where various morphology (embayment, sand and sediment characteristics, size and shape) and hydrologic conditions (currents and waves) were present. Then samples were analyzed using microbial communities (metagenomic analysis), markers of contamination (microbial source tracking), and fecal indicator bacteria (E....

These data describe estimates of large-bodied fish activity and their direction of movement with respect to a restored wetland located in Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge, Oak Harbor, Ohio, USA. Acoustic sonar technology was used to monitor fish activity following restoration and reconnection of a hydrologically isolated wetland pool to the wider Lake Erie system. Fish activity was measured during 56 multi-day observational events spanning four years following reconnection (2011-2014). Each hour of acoustic data was processed as an observational unit using a combination of commercial and purpose-built software. The resulting dataset quantifies fish activity and characterizes this movement as immigration into or emigration...

This data release contains passive detection of acoustic telemetry tags that were implanted in walleye Sander vitreus to investigate habitat selection in the dimensions of depth and temperature, and seasonal cross-lake migration in Lake Erie. The data also include continuous archive records of temperature and depth that were obtained from tags that were surrendered by fishers who reported recaptures of tagged fish.
