Future climates are simulated by general circulation models (GCM) using climate change scenarios (IPCC 2014). To project climate change for the sagebrush biome, we used 11 GCMs and two climate change scenarios from the IPCC Fifth Assessment, representative concentration pathways (RCPs) 4.5 and 8.5 (Moss et al. 2010, Van Vuuren et al. 2011). RCP4.5 scenario represents a future where climate policies limit and achieve stabilization of greenhouse gas concentrations to 4.5 W m-2 by 2100. RCP8.5 scenario might be called a business-as-usual scenario, where high emissions of greenhouse gases continue in the absence of climate change policies. The two selected time frames allow comparison of near-term (2020-2050) and longer-term...

This data release provides access to a low-altitude, aeromagnetic survey over parts of Missouri, Arkansas, and Tennessee, an area centered about 100 km north of Memphis, Tennessee. The survey covers parts of the southern arm of the New Madrid seismic zone, the northwestern margin of the Reelfoot rift, the Blytheville arch, and the Commerce geophysical lineament (reference: Langenheim, V.E., and Hildenbrand, T.G., 1997, Geological Society of America Bulletin, v. 109, p. 580). The survey is underlain by Paleocene and younger sediments, consisting of silt, clay, sand, and gravel. Plutons and other intrusive rocks lie at depth. These data were acquired between July 12 and July 28, 2013, by EDCON-PRJ, Inc., working under...

This data release provides access to a low-altitude, aeromagnetic survey of a part of south-central Washington centered approximately 30 km east of Yakima and referred to as the Hanford aeromagnetic survey. The survey includes the city of Richland, numerous smaller communities, and the Hanford Site (https://www.hanford.gov). The Hanford aeromagnetic survey extends from the Columbia Plateau westward to the Cascade Range and illuminates magnetic anomalies associated with folds and faults of the Yakima folds, including the Toppenish Ridge, Ahtanum Ridge, Umtanum Ridge, Boyleston Mountain, Rattlesnake Mountain, Saddle Mountains, and Frenchman Hills anticlines. These data were acquired during September and October, 2009,...

The U.S. Geological Survey collected topographic data in cooperation with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to assist in the management of two recreation areas at Blue Mountain Lake and near Nimrod Lake in Arkansas. Data were collected March 3-4, 2020 using terrestrial light detection and ranging (T-lidar) surveying equipment, Global navigation Satellite System (GNSS) surveying equipment, and conventional surveying techniques. The surveyed locations had a parking area, boat ramp, and some small recreational structures. Each site was surveyed using a FARO 3D tripod-mounted T-lidar unit. Additionally, a topographic survey was conducted in order to georeference the lidar survey. These topographic data were collected...

The "MasterDB-csv-final2" dataset includes 548 laboratory measurements of sediment total mercury (STHg, nanograms per gram of soil, dry), bulk density (BD, grams per cm3 of soil, dry), percent of soil organic matter (%OM, loss on ignition, LOI), percent of soil organic carbon (%SOC, calculated using the Redfield's number), RHgC (Hg to carbon ratio), and age (YBP) from 13 permafrost cores collected from 2004 to 2012 in the interoir and northern slope of Alaska by trained personnel from the U.S. Geological Survey National Research Program and the National Snow and Ice Data Center in Boulder, Colorado.

Five principal components are used to represent the climate variation in an original set of 12 composite climate variables reflecting complex precipitation and temperature gradients. The dataset provides coverage for future climate (defined as the 2040-2070 normal period) under the RCP4.5 emission scenarios. Climate variables were chosen based on their known influence on local adaptation in plants, and include: mean annual temperature, summer maximum temperature, winter minimum temperature, annual temperature range, temperature seasonality (coefficient of variation in monthly average temperatures), mean annual precipitation, winter precipitation, summer precipitation, proportion of summer precipitation, precipitation...

Samples were submitted for contract laboratory analysis as part of a study examining the occurrence of chromium and natural and anthropogenic hexavalent Chromium, Cr(VI) in groundwater. Data will be used to estimate naturally-occurring background Cr(VI) concentrations upgradient, near the plume margins, and downgradient from a mapped Cr(VI) contamination plume near Hinkley, CA (Izbicki and Groover, 2016). These Contract Lab results are part of the data release including grain-size distribution, photographic and associated chemical and mineral analysis data for 36 sediment core and alluvium samples as well as Scanning Electron Microscopy analysis on select grains from magnetic and heavy mineral separates collected...

Sandy ocean beaches in the United States are popular tourist and recreational destinations and constitute some of the most valuable real estate in the country. The boundary between land and water along the coastline is often the location of concentrated residential and commercial development and is frequently exposed to a range of natural hazards, which include flooding, storm effects, and coastal erosion. In response, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) is conducting a national assessment of coastal change hazards. One component of this research effort, the National Assessment of Shoreline Change Project, documents changes in shoreline position as a proxy for coastal change. Shoreline position is an easily understood...

The Sandy Hook artificial reef, located on the sea floor offshore of Sandy Hook, New Jersey was built to create habitat for marine life. The reef was created by the placement of heavy materials on the sea floor; ninety-five percent of the material in the Sandy Hook reef is rock. In 2000, the U.S. Geological Survey surveyed the area using a Simrad EM1000 multibeam echosounder mounted on the Canadian Coast Guard (CCG) ship Frederick G. Creed. The purpose of this multibeam survey, done in cooperation with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers when the Creed was in the New York region in April 2000, was to map the bathymetry and backscatter intensity of the sea floor in the area of the Sandy Hook artificial reef. The collected...

This dataset represents the relative average amount of non-woody cover within 2 ha) of bottomland along the Colorado River from the Colorado state line (San Juan and Grand Counties, Utah) to the southern Canyonlands NP boundary, as of September 2010. Traditional image interpretation cues were used to develop the polygons, such as shape, size, pattern, tone, texture, color, and shadow, from high resolution, true color, aerial imagery (0.3m resolution), acquired for the project. Additional, public available aerial photos (NAIP, 2011) were used to cross-reference cover classes. As with any digital layer, this layer is a representation of what is actually occurring on the ground. Errors are inherent in any interpretation...

We used the 1981 historical imagery of the Escalante River, Utah in ArcGIS to quantify channel area and average width and quantify woody riparian vegetation cover in two reaches of the river. Reach 1 was approximately 15 river kilometers (rkms) long and located between Sand and Boulder creeks within Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument. Reach 2 was approximately 16 rkms in length, extending from the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area boundary to just upstream of Choprock Canyon. We delineated the extent of active channel. Active channel was defined as the portion of the channel free of vegetation. We also delineated fluvial geomorphic features such as point bars, mid-channel bars, lateral bars and floodplain....
Habitat selection studies can make important contributions to habitat prioritization efforts for species of conservation concern. We present a large-scale collaborative effort to develop habitat selection models for Greater Sage-grouse (Centrocercus urophasianus) across large landscapes (Wyoming, USA) and multiple seasons. Greater Sage-grouse are limited to western semi-arid landscapes in North America, range-wide population declines have been documented, and the species is currently listed a “warranted but precluded” from listing under the U.S. Endangered Species Act. Wyoming is predicted to remain a stronghold for Sage-grouse populations and contains approximately 37% of the remaining birds. We developed Resource...
