Arsenic concentrations from 20,450 domestic wells in the U.S. were used to develop a logistic regression model of the probability of having arsenic > 10 µg/L (“high arsenic”), which is presented at the county, state, and national scales. Variables representing geologic sources, geochemical, hydrologic, and physical features were among the significant predictors of high arsenic. For U.S. Census blocks, the mean probability of arsenic > 10 µg/L was multiplied by the population using domestic wells to estimate the potential high-arsenic domestic-well population. Approximately 44.1 M people in the U.S. use water from domestic wells. The population in the conterminous U.S. using water from domestic wells with predicted...

Land use was quantified within a 4-km radius around 36 apiaries in North Dakota, South Dakota, and Minnesota over two years, 2015-16 and 2016-17. The area (hectares) of Ag (corn, soy, small grains), Grass (pasture, grassland, fallow land, wildflowers, shrub land, and hay land), Wetlands (herbaceous and woody), and Bee crops (alfalfa, canola, sunflower) were quantified around each apiary in each year. Within each apiary, the average change in frames of adult bees among all colonies from June to September was calculated. Additionally, the average September Varroa mite infestation rate, the average adult population size during almond pollination, the count of colonies exhibiting queen events in September, and the count...

Approximately 44.1 million people (about 14 percent of the U.S. population) rely on domestic wells as their source of drinking water. Unlike community water systems, which are regulated by the Safe Drinking Water Act, there is no comprehensive national program for testing domestic well water to ensure that is it safe to drink. There are many activities, e.g., resource extraction, climate change-induced drought, and changes in land use patterns that could potentially affect the quality of the ground water source for domestic wells. The Health Studies Branch (HSB) of the National Center for Environmental Health, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, created a Clean Water for Health Program to help address domestic...
Laboratory bioassays were conducted between 2014-2016 at Wayne State University in cooperation with USGS to determine if different species of cyanobacteria influence quagga mussel spawning and fertilization success. The data describes the algal cultures tested and their density/concentration, the number of individuals tested, and the spawning and fertilization success of quagga mussels exposed to the cyanobacteria and those that were not (control).

These data were compiled to determine whether transient population dynamics substantially alter population growth rates of sagebrush after disturbance, impede resilience and restoration, and in turn drive ecosystem transformation. Data were collected from 2014-2016 on sagebrush population height distributions at 531 sites across the Great Basin that had burned and were subsequently reseeded by the BLM. These data include field data on sagebrush density in 6 size classes and site attributes (seeding year, sampling year, random site designation, elevation, seeding rate). Also included are modeled spring soil moisture data at each site from the year of seeding to sampling. This data release includes associated software...

Data are from biological and physical environmental assessments conducted during 2018 in the lower Rouge River, MI. Sites were located upstream, downstream, and within the concrete channel section of the lower Rouge River. Water quality parameters, riparian zone characteristics, reptiles and amphibians, fishes, invertebrates, and river channel characteristics (water depth, flow, velocity) were assessed during 2018 from June-October. Previously established standardized sampling methods were used during all assessments.

Approximately 43 million people (about 14 percent of the U.S. population) rely on domestic wells as their source of drinking water. Unlike community water systems, which are regulated by the Safe Drinking Water Act, there is no comprehensive national program to ensure that the water is tested to ensure that is it safe to drink. A study published in 2009 from the National Water-Quality Assessment Program of the U.S. Geological Survey that assessed water-quality conditions from 2,100 domestic wells within 48 states reported that more than one in five (23 percent) of the sampled wells contained one or more contaminants at a concentration greater than a human-health benchmark. In addition, there are many activities,...

The exposure of white-footed mice (Peromyscus leucopus) to lead and cadmium and the potential associated toxic effects were examined at three sites contaminated with lead in the Southeast Missouri Lead Mining District and at a reference site. Mice from the contaminated sites showed evidence of oxidative stress and red-blood cell δ-aminolevulinic acid dehydratase (ALAD) activity was depressed by an average of 68% at the most contaminated site. However, histological examinations of the liver and kidney, cytologic examination of blood smears and biomarkers of lipid peroxidation and DNA damage failed to show evidence of toxic effects from lead. The biomagnification ratio of cadmium (hepatic concentration/ soil concentration)...

Salt marshes are environmental ecosystems that contribute to coastal landscape resiliency to storms and rising sea level. Ninety percent of mid-Atlantic and New England salt marshes have been impacted by parallel grid ditching that began in the 1920s–40s to control mosquito populations and to provide employment opportunities during the Great Depression (James-Pirri and others, 2009; Kennish, 2001). Continued alteration of salt marsh hydrology has had unintended consequences for salt marsh sustainability and ecosystem services. Great Barnstable Marsh (Barnstable, Cape Cod, Massachusetts) has areas of salt marsh that were ditched as well as natural areas. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) measured parameters for groundwater...
