This dataset provides the results of an assessment of estuary habitat condition in the conterminous United States. To analyze estuary condition, a cumulative disturbance index was developed based on habitat stressor variable data available at a national scale for anthropogenic disturbances measured within estuaries and their associated watersheds. Twenty-eight variables were combined within stressor categories to develop four sub-indices of disturbance for land use, alterations of river flows, pollution sources, and estuary eutrophication. These four sub-indices of disturbance were then combined to develop cumulative disturbance index scores for each estuary. This index describes the estimated combined stress on...

The Hawai‘i Biannual Waterbird Survey (Survey) has evolved since its establishment in 1955 to meet changing information needs for the conservation of endemic and migratory waterbirds in Hawai‘i. From 2005 to 2015, information needs for the management and recovery of endemic, endangered waterbirds were not being addressed by the Survey. Although waterbird counts continued during this time, data entry and management lapsed and reconciliation of spatial and tabular data was only partially completed by 2007. As a result, analyses of count data, distribution, and population trends were out of date and of limited utility for informing recovery objectives and waterbird conservation efforts. U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service...

This Atlas describes 85 sites throughout North America that constitute important sea duck habitats. It is intended to heighten awareness of valuable sea duck habitats, aid in prioritizing habitat conservation and protection efforts, and help in evaluating environmental assessments. Criteria for inclusion in this atlas were strict, relative to criteria used for other bird habitat designations, to highlight those habitats most critical to sea ducks during at least one season. To be included in this atlas, sites had to meet the following minimum criteria: (1a) The area supports at least 5% of the continental population of a sea duck species, or (1b) The area supports, or has recently supported, a total of 20,000 sea...

The Sqigwts 3-D Landscape is an interactive three-dimensional experience developed to provide an opportunity to effectively learn about the important cultural significance of sqigwts, the water potato (Sagittaria latifolia), to the Schitsu’umsh or Coeur d’Alene Indian Tribe (of the Pacific Northwest USA). The goal is to provide information on the potential vulnerability of this species to climate change and of the Schitsu’umsh living relationship with it. Schitsu’umsh knowledge and practice is called hnkhwelkhwlnet, meaning “our ways of life in the world,” and is conveyed through acts of re-telling oral traditions and stories. For the Schitsu’umsh, storytelling is a living act and can only truly occur in-person...

We have developed autonomous and high precision sensor arrays to monitor growth of individual native plants along with local environmental conditions, coupled with wireless data loggers that can provide real-time data available to managers and the wider public. We deployed an experimental set of these sensors, integrated with a weather station, 2 webcams, and a live web portal (construction in progress) to showcase how this real time information can be useful to relevant managers while also raising awareness of the challenges of climate change adaptation and Hawaiian plant conservation in general. With the increasing popularity of wildlife web-cams, it has been shown that this type of technology has a strong ability...

This data set is a 20ft resolution raster representing the percentage of LiDAR points which fall 3 to 7 meters above ground layer for the eastern 60 counties of North Carolina. This data was derived from the 2014 and 2015 QL2 LiDAR datasets collected by USGS and the North Carolina Department of Public Safety. This data was processed using Laszip software to compress the LAS data to LASZIP format, GDAL gdalbuildvirt was used to create county mosaics of 5ft resolution. For each county, the LAZ files were aggregated and processed using GRASS GIS version 7.2 svn 11/21/2016 , using r.in.lidar with the following options: r.in.lidar --o -d file=laslist.txt output=Countyname_20ft_ch method=n base_raster=Count_5ft_DEM z_range=9.84252,22.9659...
The purpose of this field data collection was to test and compare the OceanInsight HDX Mini Spectrometer as an accessible alternative against the more expensive ASD Fieldspec for collecting ground-based hyperspectral reflectance profiles for landcover analysis. The data collection took place in Dog Head Marsh and South Cape Beach within the Waquoit Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve (WBNERR). The hyperspectral profiles were collected side-by-side with both field-spectrometers using comparable sensor collection settings for various ground cover samples. The terrain and vegetation type of these sample were described as well as surveyed using Real Time Kinematic Global Positioning System (RTK-GPS). This data...

This is the YKD nest card data from 1985 to 2019 produced after processing with the R script "Nest_Cards_QC.R". This file ('Nest_Cards_1985_2019_QC.csv') should be used for producing population estimates and any other analyses. This file is what should generally be distributed for YKD nest card data requests.
This is the YKD egg observation data reformatted from the nest card data ('Nest_Cards_1985_2019_QC.csv'). The file eggs.R is used to produce this data set, and then this is further summarized into yearly stats on mean initiation and hatch dates to produce the file yearstats.csv.
This dataset is three comma-separated values (csv) files containing fish haul information collected during trawl surveys in the Chukchi Sea during the 9 August - 3 September 2015 Arctic Marine Biodiversity Observing Network (AMBON) research cruise. Tables describe haul event information, species occurrence per haul, and fish morphometric information. Fish were collected with a plump-staff beam trawl and Isaac-Kidds midwater trawl, identified to species, and their life stage, length, and weight were measured and recorded. The data was transformed from the native format into a table structure using Darwin Core terms and organized in the OBIS-ENV-DATA format.
The Hakalau Forest National Wildlife Refuge on the windward slopes of Mauna Kea is an important habitat for native forest birds and plants, including several threatened and endangered species. The region has been subjected to a variety of pressures over time, including clearing of large swaths of native forest for agriculture and livestock grazing, the intentional and accidental introduction of invasive plants and animals that have degraded habitats and outcompeted native species (e.g., pigs, rats, mosquitos, Japanese white-eye), and climate change-driven changes in temperatures, rainfall patterns, and wildfire regimes. Surrounding lands are managed by a variety of entities for conservation and other purposes (e.g.,...

Landscape conservation design is an opportunity for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s National Wildlife Refuge System (NWRS) to work collaboratively with partners to develop and implement a landscape approach that ensures our priority resources will have the capacity to cope with and respond to future change. This research models patterns of climate connectivity to map linkages among protected areas that promote long-term landscape connectivity across Alaska and northwest Canada under projected climate change. Using spatial data on current land use and climate patterns, and circuit theory-based connectivity modeling approaches, this research identifies corridors that follow climate gradients and avoid human modified...

The Arctic Coastal Plain (ACP) of Alaska is an important region for millions of migrating and nesting shorebirds. However, this region is threatened by climate change and increased human development (e.g., oil and gas production) that have the potential to greatly impact shorebird populations and breeding habitat in the near future. Because historic data on shorebird distributions in the ACP are very coarse and incomplete, we sought to develop detailed, contemporary distribution maps so that the potential impacts of climate-mediated changes and development could be ascertained. To do this, we developed and mapped habitat suitability indices for eight species of shorebirds (Black-bellied Plover [Pluvialis squatarola],...

Values represent percent of surrounding landscape (5K) are dominated by sagebrush cover. Reclassified LANDFIRE 2013 Existing Vegetation Type by selecting the ecological systems containing sagebrush (Codes: 2080, 2125, 2126, 2220, 2064, 2072, 2079, 2124) to create a binary raster dataset with 1 for the sagebrush land cover types and zero for all others. To incorporate sagebrush lost to fire in fires since the Landsat was flown in 2010 that Landfire was derived from, I used fire perimeters from 2011,2012, & 2013 to reclassify pixels designated as having sagebrush as 0 (not having sagebrush), which assumes a homogenous burn (in reality there may be patches of sagebrush left within a burn perimeter). I then ran focalsum...
The Caribbean Landscape Conservation Cooperative (CLCC) recently completed the CLCC Science Strategy: Mission Alignment to outline shared conservation values among CLCC partner entities. After meeting this important benchmark, Steering Committee (SC) members and outside reviewers suggested that the CLCC adopt a structured approach for integrating shared values and providing greater context and guidance for Science Strategy planning and implementation. This report summarizes the early design and development phases of a Structured Decision Making (SDM) approach applied during a June 2015 SC face-to-face meeting (hereafter referred to as the “CLCC SDM Workshop”) and outlines the next steps in the process.SDM is a formal,...
