The project will complete an extensive mapping of coastal change along the entire coastline of the Western Alaska Landscape Conservation Cooperative (LCC). The work will provide important baseline information on the distribution and magnitude of landscape changes over the past 41 years. The extent of change to the coastline and to coastal features, such as spits, barrier islands, estuaries, tidal guts and lagoons, is known to be substantial in some areas along the coast (e.g., portions of the Yukon–Kuskokwim Delta), although the extent of change along the full Bering Sea coast is not well documented. With this analysis, changes can be summarized for different land ownerships or other units to assess the extent of...

Unifying state-based stream classifications into a single consistent system, principal investigators at The Nature Conservancy developed a hierarchical classification system and map for stream and river systems for the Appalachian LCC that represents the region’s natural flowing-water aquatic habitats. This river classification information is needed to develop and implement instream flow standards and management recommendations so that environmental flows can become integral to all water management decisions from the onset. The study includes a report describing the methods used to evaluate and develop the classification system, a literature review of existing stream classifications, and a GIS stream data set. The...
FY2016This project will address limited tribal capacity for vulnerability assessment by providing guidance and data tailored to the needs and capacities of Northwest and Great Basin tribes. Specifically, the project will:1) Make the vulnerability assessment process more accessible to tribal staff by providing online guidance materials targeted to tribal needs and capacities;2) Address the demand for climate data at the scale of tribal decision-making by providing downscaled climate data and climate change summaries for tribes; and3) Support tribal staff through the vulnerability assessment process via workshops and a webinar to provide training on the use of project resources and datasets, and by staffing a Tribal...

Historically, available polar bear den habitat models have been based primarily on the presence of topographic features capable of capturing drifting snow. In any given season, however, the availability and precise location of snowdrifts of sufficient size to accommodate a bear den depends on the antecedent snowfall and wind conditions, and these vary from one year to the next. Thus, suitable topography is a necessary pre-condition, but is not sufficient to accurately predict potential den sites in a given year. To satisfy the requirements of agency and industry managers what is needed is a user-friendly decision-support tool that takes into account the current fall and early-winter meteorological conditions, and...

The Southeast Conservation Blueprint is a map of important areas for conservation and restoration across the Southeast and Caribbean. The Blueprint categories represent the level of value—high or medium—of healthy natural resources and their potential to benefit fish, wildlife and plants. The Blueprint the primary product of the Southeast Conservation Adaptation Strategy (SECAS). Through SECAS, diverse partners are working together to design and achieve a connected network of lands and waters that supports thriving fish and wildlife populations and improved quality of life for people across the southeastern United States and the Caribbean.
A data management plan (DMP) helps staff identify and plan to support the data management needs of a project. This document provides guidance on how to develop a DMP and identifies the items that should be considered to help ensure that data and associated products are documented, discoverable, accessible and secure throughout their useful lifespan. A DMP: 1) identifies key data management roles, 2) identifies project staff that will fill those roles and perform the associated duties and 3) summarizes how data are acquired, used, maintained and distributed. Any non-standard workflows, security requirements or access restrictions should be emphasized in the DMP.The information in a DMP is used by project staff to...
Provides a general overview of the need for the Energy Assessment research, the major products and findings that came out of the project, and the relevance of the study, models, and tools to the resource management community.
This agreement supported the Regional Conservation Opportunity Areas project, later renamed “Nature’s Network,” of the North Atlantic LCC partnership. Tasks included GIS support, development of an on-line Prioritization Tool allowing identification of conservation and restoration priorities across the U.S. Northeast and Mid-Atlantic, and development of the Nature’s Network website. The Prioritization Tool was available in the summer of 2016 and included in the release of Nature’s Network in May 2017. Cheseapeake Conservancy has aided in delivery of the Prioritization Tool by giving presentations for webinars and at workshops around the northeast.

The National Stream Internet (NSI) project was funded by the Landscape Conservation Cooperative program and led by researchers from USFS, CSIRO, NOAA, and USGS. The project developed a national analytical infrastructure for stream data that can be applied consistently anywhere in the country to develop new information at low cost. To create that infrastructure, the NSI project developed compatibility among key digital stream geospatial data and analysis tools. Those included the EPA/USGS NHD-Plus v.2 stream hydrography layer, sets of stream reach descriptors, and tools for implementing spatial statistical network models. The NSI enables consistent application of sophisticated analysis tools to many types of stream...

Jessica Rhodes, Appalachian LCC GIS Analyst, explains how managers and researchers can tailor the decision support tool to their own specific needs and priority areas and resources. A web viewer built in combination with the tool also allows users to visualize GIS data layers pertinent to elevation and land cover of the landscape, locations of dams and gas wells, and data pertaining to the presence of cold-water dependent species such as Eastern Brook Trout.

The Gulf Coastal Plains and Ozarks Landscape Conservation Cooperative Geomatics Working Group developed an on-line platform to serve geospatial data in a consistent manner that also allows end-users to easily discover, access, and integrate existing data and tools without dedicated GIS software or expertise.
