The GNLCC Multi-dimensional Synthesis is a synthesis of existing information in four categories to promote a common understanding of situation, existing information and information gaps, as well as providing an index of programmatic, resource and other climate and landscape related information for GNLCC. The synthesis includes: the GNLCC Resource Directory (organizations and initiatives); climate and ecological response (what does existing and projected climate information say and what are expected ecological effects); and monitoring (who is monitoring what).FY2011Objectives:Provide a Framework from which to organize the various monitoring and evaluation efforts. Included are key monitoring and evaluation questions...

We propose a collaborative project with the USGS, Wyoming State Climate Office, USFWS, USFS, and the NPS whereby we will assemble and maintain long-term records of climate from key stations in and around the Great Northern LCC and subject these records to a rigorous series of QA/QC procedures. Where appropriate we will use best available practices to infill missing data, and we will develop station histories (e.g., details of station moves, instrumentation changes, etc.) as a context for interpreting these records. We will then rigorously analyze patterns of long-term (50-100 years) variability and trends in these datasets, and provide summaries designed to meet the needs of non-climate specialists working in the...

WGFD has a quantity of GPS-based animal movement data available for processing. In order to fully integrate this data into existing statewide migration route data layers and/or to use it to develop modeled migration corridor data layers, it must be reviewed, organized appropriately, analyzed, modeled and finally structured to allow seamless integration. The objective of this proposal is to review and examine the data, organize it meaningfully, and present it initially in combination with existing migration routes in order to represent generalized big game migration corridors across the landscapes of Wyoming. This is anticipated as a “first look” product, and serve as a basis for future work to more fully analyze...

This workshop introduced and demonstrated key concepts and a series of software tools, whichallow managers, biologists, and conservationists to efficiently evaluate predictors of wildlife space-use and generate spatial models based on that analysis.Specific content of the workshop: Access to free or low-cost remote sensing information on vegetation, climate, habitat metrics, disturbance, etc., in a useable format, including covariate datasets currently available or under development by the NASA Terrestrial Observation and Prediction System (TOPS) Explanation of how this information is derived, created, integrated, validated and matched with species data sets prior to analysis Demonstration of user-friendly computer...

Assemble three sets of downscaled climate data (historic) and projections (future) developed by the USGS and the Climate Impacts Group at University of Washington; evaluate data documentation and formatting, and edit or repair as needed; deliver all climate data in a userfriendly format from mirrored data servers located in Corvallis, OR and Bozeman, MT.The public purpose of this project is ultimately to provide sound scientific support that is critical for guiding planning, decisions and responses aimed at managing the ecosystems of the GNLCC and other LCCs under global change. The objectives of the project are 1) to design and establish a state-of-the-art data server that is fault tolerant and expandable to meet...

Montana Department of Fish, Wildlife and Parks (MTFWP) has been involved with developing a crucial areas statewide Decision Support System (DSS) since 2008 in parallel with activities from the Western Governors Association (WGA). In April, 2010, the Crucial Areas Planning System (CAPS) was released. Also in 2010, the WGA provided funding to the 18 western states to begin developing DSSs for crucial areas among and between the 18 western states. MTFWP will be piloting a transboundary DSS for fish, wildlife, and habitats along the Idaho-Montana Divide, beginning in July 2010. MTFWP will also participating in a dual role of advisory and collaboration with the Washington, Oregon and Idaho Columbia Plateau pilot project.This...

Existing stream temperature data were compiled from numerous federal, state, tribal, and private sources to develop an integrated regional database. Spatial statistical models for river networks were applied to these data to develop an accurate model that predicts stream temperature for all fish-bearing streams in the US portion of the GNLCC. Differences between model outputs for historic and future climate scenarios were used to assess spatial variation in the vulnerability of sensitive fish species across the GNLCC.FY2011Objectives: Develop a regional stream temperature model that incorporates important climate drivers, wildfire/riparian conditions, and geomorphic factors; Use the model to understand and predict...

LC MAP, the Landscape Conservation Management and Analysis Portal, allows GNLCC partners to discover, use, develop, manage, and distribute datasets that address LCC priority issues. In FY11, this effort will extend LCMAP to allow users to generate dynamic interactive map viewers, modeled output, and web services for use in ArcExplorer and other client tools. In addition, the project will build the LCMAP Phenology Service, adding ESRI image services to the application suite and allowing GIS analysts and modelers access to a full suite of phenology data for use in ArcMap and other client tools. The set of data development and presentation tools planned will allow GIS analysts in the GNLCC community to work with multiple...

This proposal is to deliver the pilot component of a wetland tracking project initiated by the CIJV in 2010. The wetland trend project will deliver an assessment of wetland trends and develop an approach for tracking wetland trends into the future; this will have relevance to conservation planning throughout transboundary ecological planning units, including Bird Conservation Regions (BCRs) 9 and 10, and the Cold Deserts and Western Cordillera Ecoregions (Figure 2). The project is currently in a scoping stage, wherein high-level approaches are being developed for wetland tracking in 2-3 regional priority areas of the CIJV. Delivery of the pilot projects will support wider implementation of the tracking project as...

Sagebrush (Artemisia spp.)-dominated shrublands are one of the most widespread ecosystems in western North America but also among the most imperiled due to interactions among land use, fire, and exotic plants. Global climate change models predict an accelerated loss of sagebrush due to synergistic feedbacks among disturbance patterns and vegetation response; only 20% would remain under the most extreme scenario of >6 C increase by the end of this century (Fig. 1). Much of the current sagebrush distribution within the Great Northern Landscape Conservation Cooperative (GNLCC) would be lost. The conservation status of Greater sage-grouse (Centrocercus urophasianus), the most visible of >350 plant and wildlife species...
