This data release supports the following publication: Hittle, Elizabeth, 2017, Longshore Water-Current Velocity and the Potential for Transport of Contaminants: A Pilot Study in Lake Erie from Walnut Creek to Presque Isle State Park Beaches, Erie, Pennsylvania, June and August 2015: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 2016–1206 126 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr20161206 Data were collected in Lake Erie between Walnut Creek and Presque Isle State Park (PSIP) Beach 1 in June and August 2015 to support a pilot study looking at water-current velocity and the potential for contaminant transport within that area. Water-current velocity transects were collected on June 24, 25, August 18 and 19 with a Teledyne Rio...
Streamflow was collected at various streamgages in western Pennsylvania in support of the scientific investigations report "Estimation of Base Flow on Ungaged, Periodically Measured Streams in Small Watersheds in Western Pennsylvania". Data observed at the streamgages for the period of August 1, 2014 through March 31, 2017 are considered. This dataset includes 1) observed streamflow and qualifier indicating the presence of precipitation or runoff at various streamgages, 2) all data used to develop prediction intervals for the titled estimation site based upon the titled index streamgage for use in runoff influenced streamflow analysis, 3) all data used to develop prediction intervals for the titled estimation site...

Background: Presque Isle State Park (PISP), located in northwestern Pennsylvania, is located on a 3,127 acre peninsula that extends into Lake Erie. Approximately 7 miles long, PISP is a recurving sand spit where the width of the neck is less than 1,000 feet and the center, eastern end exceeds 1 mile. The park boundary extends 500 feet offshore around the perimeter of the peninsula. The spit forms an embayment, Presque Isle Bay, between its southern shore and the northern shore of the city of Erie. A channel at the east end of the bay is maintained by dredging to permit ship access to the harbor. PISP is considered a unique heritage park as it contains the only “seashore” area in Pennsylvania. Sand erosion, as on...
