This dataset is an inventory of orphaned mineral mine sites as well as closeout permitted mineral mine sites. Orphaned mineral mine sites are those that were never permitted in the state of Virginia. In 1978, the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act (SMCRA) required operatrors to obtain a permit to operate a mineral mine site in Virginia. Mineral mines are considered any mine that is non-coal. Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement (OSMRE), through its Abandoned Mine Land (AML) Reclamation Program, addresses the hazards and environmental degradation posed by these legacy coal mine sites.

This site also operated under the name Bertha Mineral Company. The records pertain mainly to the historic Austinville-Ivanhoe underground lead-zinc mines located in Wythe County. The Core Photography collection consists of imagery of drill cores from across the Commonwealth of Virginia. These cores were drilled as part of mineral and fossil fuel exploration activities, geotechnical engineering work, geological investigations, and environmental work conducted by industry, government and academia. Most of the cores were donated to the Virginia Department of Energy (Virginia Energy). The physical cores are stored in facilities adjacent to the Natural Resources building in Charlottesville, VA. The overall condition of the collection is good, with the majority of the cores stored in wooden, metal, or cardboard core boxes. In 2008, Virginia Department of Energy received by donation from the University of Virginia (UVA) a large collection of rock, mineral, and fossil specimens that was at risk of imminent disposal or dispersal due to the lack of adequate storage facilities. The collection includes many valuable and irreplaceable geologic specimens collected in Virginia by UVA students, faculty, and geoscientists from the early Virginia Geological Survey. Parts of the collection were at one time displayed in the Lewis Brooks Hall of Natural Science, which opened in 1877. The Economic Geology Mineral Resource Files comprise an extensive collection of reports documenting visits to mine sites, letters to and from mineral operators and land owners, unpublished laboratory analytical reports, field notes, photographs, sketch maps, and historic newspaper and periodical clippings pertaining to inactive mine and prospect locations throughout Virginia. The files are organized by folders and are stored in metal file cabinets. Document scanning, digital conversion, georeferencing site locations, and metadata creation is in progress. There are an estimated 9,500 documents.
