This assessment was conducted to fulfill the requirements of section 712 of the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 and to conduct a comprehensive national assessment of storage and flux (flow) of carbon and the fluxes of other greenhouse gases in ecosystems of the Eastern United States. These carbon and greenhouse gas variables were examined for major terrestrial ecosystems (forests, grasslands/shrublands, agricultural lands, and wetlands) and aquatic ecosystems (rivers, streams, lakes, estuaries, and coastal waters) in the Eastern United States in two time periods: baseline (from 2001 through 2005) and future (projections from the end of the baseline through 2050). The Great Lakes were not included in...

Understanding of the organic layer thickness (OLT) and organic layer carbon (OLC) stocks in subarctic ecosystems is critical due to their importance in the global carbon cycle. Moreover, post-fire OLT provides an indicator of long-term successional trajectories and permafrost susceptibility to thaw. To these ends, we 1) mapped OLT and associated uncertainty at 30 m resolution in the Yukon River Basin (YRB), Alaska, employing decision tree models linking remotely sensed imagery with field and ancillary data, 2) converted OLT to OLC using a non-linear regression, 3) evaluate landscape controls on OLT and OLC, and 4) quantified the post-fire recovery of OLT and OLC. Areas of shallow (< 10 cm), moderate (≥ 10 cm and...

This dataset contains data collected within limestone cedar glades at Stones River National Battlefield (STRI) near Murfreesboro, Tennessee. This dataset contains measurements of volumetric soil water content at certain quadrat locations (points) within 12 selected cedar glades. For points at which soil water content was measured by thermogravimetric analysis (oven-drying), which are points indicated by the code OD in the field SWC_Meth, the soil-water-content values contained in this dataset are identical to those for the matching dates and points in the file STRI_Glades_Soil_Water_Content_OD.shp. For details on the procedure used to calculate volumetric soil water content using the thermogravimetric method, see...

This is about 10 years of PIT telemetry data of shad (and other fish species) tagged and released in the Connecticut River. All shad were released at either Holyoke Lift ('HL') or Turners Falls. At Turners, Some were released in the tailrace of Cabot Station ('CB') or at the trap at the upstrean exit of the Cabot Fishway ('CT'). Some others were released at the bottom of the Spillway ladder ('SB') or to the canal above Cabot Trap. This file holds information on individual fish, including PIT and radio tags (where applicable), sex, length, etc.

Digital aerial imagery provides baseline data for mapping vegetation types and other land cover features. Vertical photographs (photographs taken with the aerial camera pointed straight down at the ground) collected with proper overlapping within each flight line permit an interpreter to study the photographs three-dimensionally with a stereoscope (Avery 1978) or, as with the Mississippi National River and Recreation Area (MISS) vegetation mapping project, to view stereo models of digital aerial images in three dimensions (3D) using computer workstations. Because ecologic settings are taken into account when mapping vegetation types, the ability to view the aerial images in 3D assists the recognition of those ecologic...

Separate data for floodplain elevation and bathymetry were collected on the Upper Mississippi River System (UMRS) by the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), Upper Mississippi River Restoration (UMRR) program. While many information needs can be met by using these data separately, in many cases seamless elevation data across the river and its floodplain are needed. This seamless elevation surface was generated by merging lidar (i.e., floodplain elevation) and bathymetry data. Merging the data required special processing in the areas of transition between the two sources of data.

We worked with managers in two focal areas to plan for the uncertain future by integrating quantitative climate change scenarios and simulation modeling into scenario planning exercises. In our central North Dakota focal area, centered on Knife River Indian Villages National Historic Site, managers are concerned about how changes in flood severity and growing conditions for native and invasive plants may affect archaeological resources and cultural landscapes associated with the Knife and Missouri Rivers. Climate projections and hydrological modeling based on those projections indicate plausible changes in spring and summer soil moisture ranging from a 7 percent decrease to a 13 percent increase and maximum winter...

Note: The download link includes Fish Regions, Freshwater Ecoregions, and Freshwater Resilience. Within each freshwater ecoregion, we defined one to four discrete fish regions using a cluster analysis of the USGS 8-digit Hydrologic Units (HUC) based on similarities in their native fish composition. The analysis was based on a previously developed list of native species present within each HUC (NatureServe, 2008). The cluster analysis defined up to four clusters within each freshwater ecoregion using similarity of composition (Linkage method: Flexible beta, Distance measure: Sorensen (Bray-Curtis), Flexible beta value of -0.250). To determine the faunal distinctiveness between clusters, we performed an indicator...
Resilience concerns the ability of a living system to adjust to climate change, to moderate potential damages, to take advantage of opportunities, or to cope with consequences; in short, its capacity to adapt. In this project we aim to identify the most resilient examples of key geophysical settings (e.g. sand plains, granite mountains, limestone valleys, etc.) to provide conservationists with a nuanced picture of the places where conservation is most likely to succeed over centuries. The project had three parts: 1) identifying and mapping the geophysical settings, 2) developing a quantitative estimate of resilience for each setting based on landscape complexity and permeability, and 3) identifying key linkages...

Wildfire is a dominant ridge to reef threat to human and natural communities in the Hawaiian Islands, with impacts to natural and cultural resources and ecoystem services. Fire regimes in Hawaii have shifted from very infrequent wildfire occurrence prior to human arrival to greatly increased frequency, intensity, and size over the past 100+ years, almost all of which is driven by anthropogenic ignitions and wildland fuels associated with invasive species, particularly grasses. Recent fire science has greatly increased understanding of contemporary drivers of fire in Hawaii; however, the social dimensions and historical perspectives from Hawaiian language primary sources have not been integrated into synthetic understanding...
This dataset is a component of a complete package of products from the Connect the Connecticut project. Connect the Connecticut is a collaborative effort to identify shared priorities for conserving the Connecticut River Watershed for future generations, considering the value of fish and wildlife species and the natural ecosystems they inhabit. Click here to download the full data package, including all documentation. This dataset represents the selection index used to create aquatic ecosystem-based cores. The selection index is a continuous surface in which every cell is assigned a value (0-1) based on its relative ecological integrity within each HUC6 watershed. Specifically, the selection index is equal to the...
