The Columbus Limestone at the American Aggregates Corporation quarry in southern Franklin County, Ohio. This area has limestone and dolomite lithologies. Bedrock is from the Devonian Geologic Period. The image was taken during a teachers workshop field trip probably in summer 1988.
The Columbus Limestone at the American Aggregates Corporation quarry in southern Franklin County, Ohio. This area has limestone and dolomite lithologies. Bedrock is from the Devonian Geologic Period. The image was taken during a teachers workshop field trip in a summer between 1988 to 1995.
Buckeye Furnace in Milton Township, Jackson County, Ohio. Buckeye Furnace was built in 1851 and ceased operation in 1894. It is one of more than 40 iron furnaces that operated in southeastern Ohio from about 1836 to 1916. During this time extensive oak-hickory forests were clear-cut to provide charcoal for the furnaces, where ore from nearby mines was smelted. For more than a half century some of the best iron in the world flowed from these furnaces. The discovery of richer, more abundant ores in Michigan and Minnesota brought Ohios iron industry to an end. Buckeye Furnace was restored in the early 1970s and is part of the Ohio Historical Society's museum site system in Ohio. The image was taken during a teachers...
Roy T. Dawson, driller, and William R. Dunfee, drilling assistant, with the Ohio Geological Survey's Mobile B-61 Pacemaker core rig drilling the first of 16 core holes for the Superconducting Super Collider (SSC) project. Drilling was done in the Columbus Limestone of the Devonian Geologic Period at the Penry Stone Company, Inc., quarry south of Radnor, Delaware County, Ohio. The SSC was proposed by the United States Department of Energy as the largest, most powerful particle accelerator ever built. It would enable physicists to shatter protons into their consituent subatomic particles in order to study the basic structure of the atom. At least 20 states were expected to submit proposals by August 1987 to be awarded...
Plum Run Stone quarry located two miles east of Peebles in Adams County, Ohio. Image shows the Tymochtee Dolomite and Greenfield Dolomite. Unit lithology in this area is dolomite, shale, limestone and sandstone. Bedrock is from the Silurian Geologic Period. Michael C. Hansen took this photograph probably in the late 1970s.
An outcrop of the Upper Freeport (No. 7) coal and limestone of the Allegheny Group at West Point, Columbiana County, Ohio. Bedrock is from the Pennsylvanian Geologic Period. This area has shale, siltstone, sandstone, conglomerate, limestone, coal, clay and flint lithologies. The photograph was taken by Myron T. Sturgeon in 1944. Location approximate to Columbiana County, Ohio.
Ohio Academy of Science fieldtrip in 1985 at Backbone Creek in Clermont County. Ohio Geological Survey geologist Mac Swinford is pictured on the eroded outcrop along the creek. Unit lithology in this area is interbedded limestone and shale. Bedrock is from Ordovician Geologic Period.
Steamboat Rock is an ancient rock-fall site of the Cedarville Dolomite in Clifton Gorge State Nature Preserve, Greene County, Ohio. Unit lithology in this area is limestone, shale and dolomite. Bedrock is from the Silurian Geologic Period. Photograph was taken in 1963.
Outcrop of Columbus Limestone at Marble Cliff Quarry west of Columbus, Ohio. Unit lithology in this area is limestone and dolomite. Bedrock is from the Devonian Geologic Period. This photograph was taken by Philip J. Celnar in 1971.
An outcrop showing a possible fault line in the Pottsville Group at Bowling Green Township, Licking County, Ohio. This area has shale, siltstone, sandstone, conglomerate, limestone and coal lithologies. Bedrock is from the Pennsylvanian Geologic Period. The photograph was taken by Pauline Smyth on September 23, 1953.
An outcrop with the Ewing limestone of the Conemaugh Group at the ConRail railroad cut north of the Ava Brick Corporation claypit north of Ava, Buffalo Township, Noble County, Ohio. This area has shale, siltstone, mudstone, sandstone, limestone and coal lithologies. Bedrock is from the Pennsylvanian Geologic Period. Horace R. Collins and Myron T. Sturgeon are pictured in this image taken by Michael C. Hansen in 1978.
Outcrop with Brassfield Formation in Bratton Township, Adams County, Ohio, on State Route 73. Unit lithology in this area is limestone with interbedded shale and dolomite. Bedrock shows the contact between the Ordovician and Silurian Geologic Periods. Michael C. Hansen took this photograph in 1978.
The image shows a close-up of a section of Ohio Division of Geological Survey's core DGS 3275 at the interval of 1693.3 to 1693.8 feet. This section shows a calcite-filled fault in the Black River Group. This core section comes from the transition zone of the Serpent Mound Impact Structure, which has dolomite, shale, limestone, sandstone, and siltstone lithologies. Because of the geologic forces that have acted on the site of the impact structure, bedrock in the area is a mixture of uplifted, down dropped, faulted, folded and eroded rock from the Ordovician, Silurian, Devonian and Mississippian Geologic Periods. In 1979, John L. Carroll Mineral Exploration of New York City drilled two core holes in the Serpent Mound...
Damage to Hastings Road below the Monticello Village Apartments landslip in Athens, Athens County, Ohio. The Monticello Village Apartments was a complex of fourteen to sixteen buildings when construction was finished in 1968. The level area on which the apartment buildings were constructed was fashioned from a cut on the hillside in the Clarksburg red bed. The mudstone removed in this cut was used as fill on the edge of the hill in order to expand the level area for apartment construction. On November 4, 1972, the slope failed, causing the destruction of a 150 meter section of Hastings Road in the location of Ohio State Route 32. On November 7, 1972, four buildings were evacuated after additional rapid movement...
