An outcrop of the Portersville shale of the Conemaugh Group in the southwest 1/4 of the southeast 1/4 of section 24, Bloom Township, Noble County, Ohio. This area has shale, siltstone, mudstone, sandstone, limestone and coal lithologies. Bedrock is from the Pennsylvanian Geologic Period. The image was taken by Michael C. Hansen in 1973 during an Ohio University field trip.
Rock core sample showing the Pottsville Group-Sharon sandstone/conglomerate. The sample is from Core Record File No. 2541 in Raccoon Township, Gallia County, Ohio. This area has shale, siltstone, sandstone, conglomerate, limestone and coal lithologies. Bedrock is from the Pennsylvanian Geologic Period. The photograph was taken by Michael C. Hansen in 1982.
Outcrop of Columbus Limestone at Marble Cliff Quarry west of Columbus, Ohio. Unit lithology in this area is limestone and dolomite. Bedrock is from the Devonian Geologic Period. This photograph was taken in 1971 probably by Philip J. Celnar.
An outcrop of the Kope Formation along the streambed of Backbone Creek in Clermont County, Ohio. Unit lithology in this area is interbedded limestone and shale. Bedrock is from the Ordovician Geologic Period. The photograph was taken during an Ohio Academy of Science fieldtrip in 1985.
Outcrop is at a quarry in Jefferson Township, Madison County, near West Jefferson, Ohio. Note the 1 foot sandstone layer at the point of contact. Bedrock shows the contact between the Silurian and Devonian Geologic Periods. The photograph was taken in 1964.
Plum Run Stone quarry located two miles east of Peebles in Adams County, Ohio. Image shows the Tymochtee Dolomite. Unit lithology in this area is dolomite, shale, limestone and sandstone. Bedrock is from the Upper Silurian Geologic Period. Michael C. Hansen took this photograph probably in the late 1970s.
Plum Run Stone quarry located two miles east of Peebles in Adams County, Ohio. Image shows the Peebles Dolomite and Lilley Formation. A fault plane is visible in the image. Unit lithology in this area is dolomite, shale, limestone and sandstone. Bedrock is from the Silurian Geologic Period. Michael C. Hansen took this photograph probably in the late 1970s.
Plum Run Stone quarry located two miles east of Peebles in Adams County, Ohio. The image shows the quarry wall surface of Peebles Dolomite in June 1963. Unit lithology in this area is dolomite, shale, limestone and sandstone. Bedrock is from the Silurian Geologic Period.
Steamboat Rock is the site of an ancient rock-fall of Cedarville Dolomite in Clifton Gorge State Nature Preserve, Greene County, Ohio. Unit lithology in this area is limestone, shale and dolomite. Bedrock is from the Silurian Geologic Period.
Miller Arch is a natural arch of resistant Silurian Geologic Period Peebles Dolomite in the Miller Sanctuary State Nature Preserve, Highland County, Ohio. The Natural Arch and Bridge Society defines a natural arch as a rock exposure that has a hole completely through it formed by the natural, selective removal of rock, leaving a relatively intact frame. The image was taken by Timothy A. Snyder in 1988.
An outcrop showing splits in the Putnam Hill limestone of the Allegheny Group at a small quarry in Section 30 of Pike Township, Stark County, Ohio. This area has shale, siltstone, sandstone, conglomerate, limestone, coal, clay and flint lithologies. Bedrock is from the Pennsylvanian Geologic Period. The photograph was probably taken around 1960 and includes Horace R. Collins for scale.
Cedarville Dolomite at Clifton Gorge State Nature Preserve in Greene County, Ohio. Unit lithology in this area is limestone, shale and dolomite. Bedrock is from the Silurian Geologic Period. Photograph was taken in 1993 and prominently features the Little Miami River.
Field trip participants on the Central Peak of the Serpent Mound Impact Structure at the William V. Martin farm north of Peebles in Adams County, Ohio. This area has dolomite, shale, limestone, sandstone, and siltstone lithologies. Because of the geologic forces that have acted on the site of the impact crater, bedrock in the area is a mixture of uplifted, down dropped, faulted, folded and eroded rock from the Ordovician, Silurian, Devonian and Mississippian Geologic Periods. The photograph was taken by Gerald H. Newsom during the American Association of Petroleum Geologists Eastern Section Meeting Field Trip to the Plum Run Quarry and the Serpent Mound Disturbance on October 10, 1998. The Serpent Mound Impact Structure...

The Ohio Geological Survey's Mobile B-61 Pacemaker core rig drilling the first of 16 core holes for the Superconducting Super Collider (SSC) project. Drilling was done in the Columbus Limestone of the Devonian Geologic Period at the Penry Stone Company, Inc., quarry south of Radnor, Delaware County, Ohio. The SSC was proposed by the United States Department of Energy as the largest, most powerful particle accelerator ever built. It would enable physicists to shatter protons into their consituent subatomic particles in order to study the basic structure of the atom. At least 20 states were expected to submit proposals by August 1987 to be awarded the SSC project location. A detailed geologic report was needed for...

Damage to Hastings Road below the Monticello Village Apartments landslip in Athens, Athens County, Ohio. The Monticello Village Apartments was a complex of fourteen to sixteen buildings when construction was finished in 1968. The level area on which the apartment buildings were constructed was fashioned from a cut on the hillside in the Clarksburg red bed. The mudstone removed in this cut was used as fill on the edge of the hill in order to expand the level area for apartment construction. On November 4, 1972, the slope failed, causing the destruction of a 150 meter section of Hastings Road in the location of Ohio State Route 32. On November 7, 1972, four buildings were evacuated after additional rapid movement...
