In June 2015, the Eastern Tallgrass Prairie and Big Rivers Landscape Conservation Cooperative (LCC) of the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service (USFWS) granted $80,000 to the City of St. Louis (City) to promote urban monarch conservation by expanding activities associated with Milkweeds for Monarchs: The St. Louis Butterfly Project (M4M). Generally speaking, the USFWS grant was to: (1) enhance urban education and outreach efforts, and (2) conduct research on urban monarch habitat. The project spent $51,583.57 on activities for ed and $27,785.68 for research. Monitoring is fundamental to wildlife management but rarely does it happen. Most often the challenges of funding, protocols, and qualified workers prove too great and most monitoring collapses in a few short years. This program functions to address these challenges and allows us to complete the wildlife management cycle of plan, implement and evaluate. The final step of monitoring is critical to understand the effects of management. Monitoring data also informs habitat delivery through development of decision support tools to target conservation actions. Accelerating loss of habitat and changing climate requires distributional information just to understand where to conserve species.

Seven Landscape Conservation Cooperatives (LCCs) are working together to identify key scientific uncertainties associated with design and management of a sustainable ecosystem/floodplain landscape that provides multiple benefits for agricultural productivity, water quality, and wildlife conservation—both locally and in the Gulf of Mexico. Monarch butterfly and other pollinators are in trouble. Monarch butterfly habitat— including milkweed host plants and nectar food sources—has declined drastically throughout most of the United States. Observed overwinter population levels have also exhibited a long-term downward trend, suggesting a strong relationship between habitat loss and monarch population declines. The multi-LCC Mississippi River Basin/Gulf Hypoxia Initiative is a joint effort to find the nexus of water quality, wildlife, and people in the Mississippi River Basin. Natural resource management requires decision making in the face of uncertain future conditions. Climate change has been identified by our partnership as a high-priority threat to grasslands and all of our priority habitats, affecting water availability, species composition, species interactions, phenology, and other factors.
