This child item data set provides high-resolution, nearshore, spatial water-quality data collected from Owasco Lake, New York, on June 26 and October 8, 2019. All data are reported as raw measured values. Continuous water-quality monitors were mounted to a boat at approximately 0.5-meters below the water surface and used to measure nitrate, chlorophyll fluorescence (fChl), fluorescent dissolved organic matter (fDOM), dissolved oxygen, specific conductance, phycocyanin fluorescence (fPC), turbidity, pH, and temperature.

Benthic diatom assemblages are known to be indicative of water quality but have yet to be widely adopted in biological assessments in the United States due to several limitations. Our goal was to address some of these limitations by developing regional multi-metric indices (MMIs) that are robust to inter-laboratory taxonomic inconsistency, adjusted for natural covariates, and sensitive to a wide range of anthropogenic stressors. We aggregated bioassessment data from two national-scale federal programs and used a data-driven analysis in which all-possible combinations of 2-7 metrics were compared for three measures of performance. The datasets in this release support the Carlisle, et al. 2022 report cited herein....

The Denver fossil algae database were gathered from the inception of Denver Region in 1953 by Richard Rezak. His specialty was algae, carbonate platforms, and off-shore modern reefs. He developed a very useful litho-stratigraphic tool while studying Proterozoic algae and stromatolites in Glacier National Park. This lead to his studies of modern analogs in the Caribbean and South Seas. His catalogs were converted into digital form, Excel and Filemaker Pro database. The Catalog consist of 1001 fossil localities. His supplementary data has been added whenever possible - sources field map locality points, E&R files with enhanced faunal lists, as well as formal publications

Periphyton is a complex community of detritus, bacteria, fungi, and algae that grows attached to submerged substrates. Assemblage structure data for algae and cyanobacteria from periphyton samples were collected on a monthly basis from 2017 to 2021. Compiled data were reported as absolute abundance (cells) and biovolume per volume as well as absolute abundance (cells) and biovolume per area at four locations increasing in distance East of the L-67 canal in Water Conservation Area 3 (WCA 3) of the Florida Everglades immediately north of Everglades National Park. The periphyton assemblages were analyzed for five sample types including periphyton plates (Plates), invertebrate inclusion and exclusion plates (Inverts),...

This U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) data release contains phytoplankton classification and enumeration results from near-surface samples analyzed by imaging flow cytometry and collected as part of a harmful algae bloom (HAB) monitoring study conducted in collaboration with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC). Samples were collected biweekly from monitoring platforms in Owasco and Seneca Lakes and one bloom sample site at Emerson Park Boat Launch in Owasco Lake. The platforms were deployed from June-October in 2020. This dataset includes all routine and quality assurance/quality control samples collected at the three sampling locations. Phytoplankton were identified to the lowest possible...

The data include measurements of chlorophyll a and algal stoichiometry from benthic algae collected from Sky Pond, Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado, in 2015-2017; results of nutrient diffusion experiments in Sky Pond including chlorophyll a and other pigments to identify chlorophytes, bacillariophytes, and myxomycetes, and results of a laboratory incubation using benthic chlorophytes to identify ecosystem responses (nitrogen uptake, net primary productivity, ecosystem respiration, net ecosystem productivity, and dissolved organic carbon production) under nutrient and temperature treatments.

This dataset provides the estimated cell abundance and total biovolume for whole-water picoplankton samples collected by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) at 25 different sites in Kansas between August of 2020 and August of 2022. The samples were analyzed by BSA Environmental Services, Inc. This data is part of a larger multi-agency project between U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, National Aeronautics and Space Administration, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and USGS called the Cyanobacteria Assessment Network (CyAN). The goal of the CyAN project is to develop a satellite-based, early warning system to detect harmful algal blooms (HABs) in freshwater systems.

In the contiguous United States there are approximately 5 million kilometers of streams and rivers, which contain a diversity of aquatic species including microbes, aquatic vegetation (algae and plants), invertebrates, and fish, all of which play key roles in structuring the food web that sustains aquatic life, wildlife, and in some cases humans. Over the last 50 years, human actions have profoundly altered the natural input and cycling of nutrients (nitrogen and phosphorus) through the environment and greatly increased the amount of nutrients transported to our streams, rivers, and estuaries. Although nutrients are essential for a healthy aquatic ecosystem, excess nutrients can affect aquatic and human health....
Laboratory bioassays were conducted between 2014-2016 at Wayne State University in cooperation with USGS to determine if different species of cyanobacteria influence quagga mussel spawning and fertilization success. The data describes the algal cultures tested and their density/concentration, the number of individuals tested, and the spawning and fertilization success of quagga mussels exposed to the cyanobacteria and those that were not (control).
The Bonnet Carré Spillway (BCS), located about 28 miles northwest of New Orleans, was constructed by the US Army Corp of Engineers in the early 1930s as part of an integrated flood-control system for the lower Mississippi River (MR). The BCS control structure consists of 350 individual bays that can be opened to divert water from the river to Lake Pontchartrain to relieve pressure on downstream levees. Lake Pontchartrain (LP) is hydrologically connected to the Mississippi Sound (MS Sound) and the Gulf of Mexico and is more accurately characterized as an estuarine embayment. BCS openings have occurred twelve times prior to 2019 because of high Mississippi River stages, typically in late spring. In 2019, the spillway...
