From August 2018 to October 2019, the U.S. Geological Survey collected spatially high-resolution water quality data as part of five shoreline synoptic surveys around the perimeters of Owasco, Seneca, and Skaneateles Lakes within the Finger Lakes Region of New York. Water-quality data were collected just below water surface utilizing YSI EXO2 multiparameter sondes and portable nitrate sensors paired with real-time GPS data as part of a HABs monitoring program in the Finger Lakes. In October 2019, water-quality data collection was paired with discrete phytoplankton grab samples on Owasco Lake and Seneca Lake. Benthic diatom assemblages are known to be indicative of water quality but have yet to be widely adopted in biological assessments in the United States due to several limitations. Our goal was to address some of these limitations by developing regional multi-metric indices (MMIs) that are robust to inter-laboratory taxonomic inconsistency, adjusted for natural covariates, and sensitive to a wide range of anthropogenic stressors. We aggregated bioassessment data from two national-scale federal programs and used a data-driven analysis in which all-possible combinations of 2-7 metrics were compared for three measures of performance. The Denver fossil algae database were gathered from the inception of Denver Region in 1953 by Richard Rezak. His specialty was algae, carbonate platforms, and off-shore modern reefs. He developed a very useful litho-stratigraphic tool while studying Proterozoic algae and stromatolites in Glacier National Park. This lead to his studies of modern analogs in the Caribbean and South Seas. His catalogs were converted into digital form, Excel and Filemaker Pro database. The Catalog consist of 1001 fossil localities. His supplementary data has been added whenever possible - sources field map locality points, E&R files with enhanced faunal lists, as well as formal publications

This U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Data Release provides phytoplankton data for samples collected from twelve large river sites throughout the United States, from June through October 2019. All data are reported as raw calculated values and are not rounded to USGS significant figures. The dataset includes all routine and quality assurance/quality control samples collected as part of a National Water Quality Assessment Project pilot study to describe cyanobacteria and cyanotoxin occurrence in the Nation's large rivers. Phytoplankton were identified to the lowest possible taxonomic level with both abundance (reported as both natural units and cells) and biovolume reported.

Multispectral satellite images from two reaches of the Buffalo National River in northern Arkansas were acquired between August 6, 2021, and September 15, 2021, to support research on remote sensing of benthic algae. The images included in this data release were obtained by the WorldView3 and Planet SkySat sensors. The original images were cropped to produce smaller subset images focused on each of the two primary study reaches. In addition, the WorldView3 images were geo-referenced and warped to improve alignment with field measurements. Our approach will include sampling a wide range of habitats and environmental conditions throughout the middle and lower Pecos River basin, across an 18 month time-span to account for seasonal and phenological events. We will utilize a suite of univariate and multivariate statistical techniques to relate occurrence and density of golden alga to environmental factors and other co-occurring organisms. Digital aerial photographs of the Buffalo National River in northern Arkansas were acquired on August 24, 2021 to support research on remote sensing of benthic algae. The images included in this data release were obtained by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service using the following key pieces of equipment: Quest Kodiak K100 aircraft, PhaseOne iXURS-1000 4-band (RGB and NIR) 100 mega-pixel medium format digital camera, SOMAG gyro-stabilized/vibration isolation sensor mounting, and POS AV510 GNSS/IMU navigational system. Field measurements of water depth and percent cover of benthic algae were acquired from two reaches of the Buffalo National River in northern Arkansas August 24-25, 2021, to support research on remote sensing of benthic algae from aerial photographs and satellite images. The depth measurements included in this data release were obtained by wading the channel and measuring water depth with a stadia rod. Percent of algae cover on the streambed at each sample point was estimated visually to the nearest 10% on a scale from 0.0 to 1.0. REPORT PROJECT BACKGROUND: Golden alga (Prymnesium parvum) is a harmful algal species that is primarily found in marine ecosystems but is also present and invasive in brackish inland waters. The first documented bloom of golden alga in the United States occurred in the Pecos River in 1985. This species has since invaded other water bodies in the Pecos River basin (e.g. sinkhole habitats, reservoirs) and has been reported in at least 23 U.S. states. Toxins produced by golden alga can be lethal to fishes, bivalves, crayfish, and gilled amphibians. The ecological and economical impacts of golden alga blooms have been severe. Real-time, high frequency (1-second sample interval) GPS location, water quality, and water isotope (δ2H, δ18O) data was collected in the Cache Slough Complex (CSC), located in the northern San Francisco Bay Delta (SFBD). Data was collected on 10/01/2014 for an approximate 4-hour period (10:30 – 14:30 h PST) while underway on the R/V Mary Landsteiner, a 26-foot USGS vessel. Sample water was pumped continuously through a pickup tube, passed through a 178 micron pre-filter, a de-bubbler, and diverted through a 0.2 micron filter and an unfiltered flow path to water quality instrumentation. The U.S. Geological Survey monitored algal biomass accrual and concentrations of metals and other trace elements in stream water and periphytic algae at 3-4 day intervals over a 2-week period at 3 locations within the upper and middle portions of the mining-impacted Clark Fork River, Montana, and at one location on the relatively unimpacted Blackfoot River tributary. This data release makes available trends in major and minor trace element concentrations in surface water and periphytic algae, and corresponding trends in concentrations of autotrophic (chlorophyll a) and heterotrophic (ash-free dry mass) algal biomass collected in late July and early August 2015.
