Our Mission & History Volunteers in the Tumacacoris. Photo by Trevor Hare Sky Island Alliance is a science-based conservation organization. We are dedicated to the protection and restoration of the rich natural heritage of native species and habitats in the Sky Island region of the southwestern United States and northwestern Mexico. We work with volunteers, scientists, land owners, public officials, and government agencies to establish protected areas, restore healthy landscapes, and promote public appreciation of the region's unique biological diversity. Sky Island Alliance pioneered landscape-level conservation planning by integrating the science of conservation biology with grassroots organizing and on-the-ground...

Some of the SNK rasters intentionally do not align or have the same extent. These rasters were not snapped to a common raster per the authors' discretion. Please review selected rasters prior to use. These varying alignments are a result of the use of differing source data sets and all products derived from them. We recommend that users snap or align rasters as best suits their own projects. - This dataset consists of raster distribution maps for terrestrial vertebrate species in Alaska. Individual species distribution maps were developed using the best available known occurrence points for each species and modeled using MaxEnt software and a series of environmental predictor variables. Output maps were clipped...

This report is volume 1 of a two-volume ecological assessment of grassland ecosystems in the Southwestern United States. Broadscale assessments are syntheses of current scientific knowledge, including a description of uncertainties and assumptions, to provide a characterization and comprehensive description of ecological, social, and economic components within an assessment area. Volume 1 of this assessment focuses on the ecology, types, conditions, and management practices of Southwestern grasslands. The second volume, due to be published in 2005, describes wildlife and fish species, their habitat requirements, and species-specific management concerns, in Southwestern grasslands. This assessment is regional in...
NPS is transforming the way park resource information is managed and delivered to parks, partners, and the public. IRMA (Integrated Resource Management Applications) is the name given to the project that has guided this transformation, and to the web portal that is its end result. View or download the IRMA project brief (.pdf). IRMA is a portfolio of tools and applications, and the beginnings of a "one-stop" for data and information on park-related resources. From IRMA you can search for, view, and download documents, reports, publications, data sets, and park species lists. You can get information on park visitor numbers, park projects, and apply for a park research permit. Park staff can navigate to certain internal...

This virtual flora and fauna was created to serve as a gateway for the environmental research community, as well as the general public, to access and contribute to a growing collection of specimen records and observations. These data represent the products of MABA research expeditions as well as historic data from herbaria, museum collections, and scientific literature. Sky Island Alliance's MABA project is a visionary initiative to catalog, protect, and restore one of the world's premier biodiversity hotspots - the Southwestern U.S. and Northwestern Mexico’s Madrean Sky Island region (Sonora, Arizona, Chihuahua, and New Mexico). MABA is committed to inventorying the wildlands and wildlife of these Sky Islands —...

Heritage Data Management System - HDMS The HDMS is part of a global network of more than 80 Natural Heritage Programs and Conservation Data Centres. HDMS information is available so Arizonans can make prudent decisions weighing future development, economic growth, and environmental integrity. Using published and unpublished reports, data collected by cooperating agencies, review of scientific collections, collaboration with professionals and many other sources of information, HDMS identifies wildlife, plants and geographic areas of special concern in Arizona, and consolidates information about their status and distribution within the State. Learn more about Arizona HDMS. -On-line Environmental Review Tool (ERT)....

The Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation – Natural Heritage Program (DCRDNH) and the Florida Natural Areas Inventory (FNAI) at Florida State University (collectively, Project Partners) were funded by the South Atlantic Landscape Conservation Cooperative (SALCC) in April 2015 to develop ten species distribution models (SDM) of priority at-risk and range-restricted species (Ambystoma cingulatum, Echinacea laevigata, Heterodon simus, Lindera melissifolia, Lythrum curtissii, Notophthalmus perstriatus, Phemeranthus piedmontanus, Rhus michauxii, and Schwalbea americana) for the purposes of incorporating the models and supporting information on the conservation and management needs of the species into the...

Highway runoff has the potential to negatively impact receiving systems including stormwater retention ponds where highway particulate matter can accumulate following runoff events. Tire wear particles, which contain about 1% Zn by mass, make up approximately one-third of the vehicle derived particulates in highway runoff and therefore may serve as a stressor to organisms utilizing retention ponds as habitat. In this study, we focused on the potential contribution of tire debris to Zn accumulation by Rana sylvatica larvae and possible lethal or sublethal impacts resulting from exposure to weathered tire debris during development. Eggs and larvae were exposed to aged sediments (containing either ZnCl2 or tire particulate...

The Shenanadoah Salamander (Plethodon shenandoah) is an endangered salamander found only in the mountains of Shenandoah National Park. Field surveys of the salamander were conducted from 2007-2022 using daytime cover object surveys. In order to capture the totality of P. shendandoah’s range we sampled from low to high elevation across a broad geographic range. We created a spatial generalized additive model with aspect, latitude, longitude, and elevation and heat load index (HLI) to predict salamander occupancy and create a new range map based on our extended surveys. All spatial covariates were extracted from a 15m digital elevation model layer of Shenandoah National Park. Temperature and precipitaiton data were...

As the third largest federal land manager in the United States (Keystone Center 1996a), the Department of Defense (DoD) mandates the conservation and wise management of the natural resources on military installations. To this end, DoD policy directs each Army installation to produce an Integrated Natural Resource Management Plan (INRMP), the purpose of which is to “ensure that natural resource conservation measures and Army activities on mission land are integrated and consistent with federal stewardship requirements” (Army Goals and Implementing Guidance for Natural Resource Planning Level Surveys and Integrated Natural Resource Management Plans, 21 March 1997). The basic goal of this INRMP is to support and sustain...

REAs synthesize the best available information about resource conditions and trends within an ecoregion. They highlight and map areas of high ecological value, including important wildlife habitats and corridors, and gauge their potential risks from climate change, wildfires, invasive species, energy development, and urban growth. REAs also map areas that have high energy development potential, and relatively low ecological value, which could be best-suited for siting future energy development. In addition, REAs establish landscape-scale baseline ecological data to gauge the effect and effectiveness of future management actions. The Mojave Basin and Range REA was initiated in July 2010. It has been completed and...

The Nature Conservancy has been a leader in spatial conservation planning for many years. The primary planning tool used by the Conservancy for landscape-scale conservation planning over the past decade has been Ecoregional Assessments. Our United States Ecoregional Assessments identify priority areas for conservation within the United States. This includes data from 67 Ecoregional Assessments, which identified over 9,000 conservation priority areas. Importantly, this dataset contains the conservation targets that we hope to conserve within these priority areas. Conservation targets include both species and habitat types (e.g. plant communities; ecosystems). Our dataset includes 8,507 unique species and 6,633 habitat...
