The Northwest Boreal Science and Management Research Tool (SMRT) provides the ability to search a vast, curated database for the Northwest Boreal region in one place. Users can explore thousands of curated scholarly articles, state and federal resource reports, land management plans, and unique transboundary datasets. Each entry includes geographic information about the area of study, allowing users to draw a box on a map to narrow searches to information directly related to a specific region in Alaska, the Yukon, British Columbia, and Northwest Territories. Potential users include land and resource managers, students, community members, and scientists interested in specific regions.

A new transportation demand model is described showing a simple data-base structure. It only requires input data referring to the fleets and the engine characteristics of the transportation park. The main characteristic of the model is its expertise in analysing the effects of different policies oriented to the reduction of the pollution levels and to the energy savings in the transportation sector. The results are provided both in terms of energy consumption and quantities of pollutant released to the environment. The effects of different transportation scenarios can be easily analysed using a simple "electronic sheet" way of representation.

Advanced Research Workshop on “Challenges in Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Regulation of the Nuclear Legacy” organised jointly by Norwegian Radiation Protection Authority (NRPA) and the Federal Medical-Biological Agency of Russia (FMBA) was held at “Ershovo” (Zvenigorod) in Moscow, Russia, 25–27 September 2007 with participants from international organisations like NATO, IAEA, ICRP and several countries Norway, Russia, United States, France, United Kingdom, Sweden and Kyrgyzstan. The workshop was sponsored by the NATO Programme Security Through Science and Norwegian Radiation protection Authority. The sponsorship and the financial support of NATO is gratefully acknowledged. The workshop was organized in...
The paper suggests the ‘middle out’ as an additional, and sometimes alternative approach to ’bottom-up’ and ’ top-down’ efforts to drive low carbon innovations and practices in society. Individuals are often seen by policy makers as the target agents for changing their own behaviour. To induce bottom-up change in energy demand patterns, governmental and non-governmental organizations have produced information tools such as carbon calculators, real-time feedback, and media based campaigns encourage individuals to reduce their carbon emissions voluntarily. At the same time, government employs top-down regulatory approaches to reduce emissions. These are being demonstrated in the introduction of market mechanisms (e.g....
OpenET uses best available science to provide easily accessible satellite-based estimates of evapotranspiration (ET) for improved water management across the western United States. Using the Data Explorer, users can explore ET data at the field scale for millions of individual fields or at the original quarter-acre resolution of the satellite data. The SSEBop ET data is part of the ensemble dataset and can be viewed at the website.

Across the Tennessee River Basin is a collaboration within the Appalachian LCC bringing together multiple agencies and stakeholders in a joint effort to plan and deliver landscape conservation actions to protect one of the most diverse areas for aquatic species in North America. This map displays the Tennessee River Basin Network’s conservation project locations with information about each project and shows how many conservation projects occur in each watershed within the Tennessee River Basin.

Linkage Mapper uses GIS maps of core habitat areas and resistances to identify and map linkages between core areas. Each cell in a resistance map is attributed with a value reflecting the energetic cost, difficulty, or mortality risk of moving across that cell. Resistance values are typically determined by cell characteristics, such as land cover or housing density, combined with species-specific landscape resistance models. As animals move away from specific core areas, cost-weighted distance analyses produce maps of total movement resistance accumulated. The tool identifies adjacent (neighboring) core areas and create maps of least-cost corridors between them. It then mosaics the individual corridors to create...

Seasonal change is important to consider when managing conservation areas at landscape-scales. The study of such patterns throughout the year is referred to as phenology. Recurring life-cycle events that are initiated and driven by environmental factors include animal migration and plant flowering. Phenological events, such as fall color change in deciduous forests, the first flowering in spring, and for those with allergies, the start of the pollen season, capture public attention. These events can impact our daily lives, provide clues to help understand and manage ecosystems, and provide evidence of how climate variability can impact the natural cycle of plants and animals. Phenological observations can be gathered...

The tool works by identifying vulnerable stream and riverbanks that lack tree cover and shade in coldwater stream habitats. By locating the best spots to plant trees in riparian zones, resource managers can provide shade that limits the amount of solar radiation heating the water and reduces the impacts from climate change. This well-established management strategy will benefit high-elevation, cold-water aquatic communities.
