The upper Colorado River system is the habitat of several endangered fish: Kendall Warm Springs dace, Colorado squawfish, humpback chub, and bonytail chub. The single most important factor contributing to the decline of these species has been the construction and operation of dams and reservoirs, which have effected flow, temperature, chemistry, biota, and migration routes. Water depletion amounting to about 25% of the total has also had similar effects, particularly by eliminating the backwater nursery areas. Human impacts occurring throughout the Northeast and Midwest United States, including urbanization, agriculture, and dams, have multiple effects on the region’s streams which support economically valuable stream fishes. Alcoves are small embayments found along a river's edge. They are found at the downstream end of gravel bars, tributary confluences, and other localized channel expansions. Alcoves generally have low velocities because they are protected from the main current, though they may "wash out" at higher flows. Alcoves are a type of off-channel habitat that are used by juvenile salmon for rearing.
