Cumulatively, headwater streams contribute to maintaining hydrologic connectivity and ecosystem integrity at regional scales. Hydrologic connectivity is the water-mediated transport of matter, energy and organisms within or between elements of the hydrologic cycle. Headwater streams compose over two-thirds of total stream length in a typical river drainage and directly connect the upland and riparian landscape to the rest of the stream ecosystem. Altering headwater streams, e.g., by channelization, diversion through pipes, impoundment and burial, modifies fluxes between uplands and downstream river segments and eliminates distinctive habitats. The large-scale ecological effects of altering headwaters are amplified...

Airborne electromagnetic (AEM) and magnetic survey data along four flight lines were collected in Everglades National Park, Florida as part of a larger survey. Data were collected during October 2001. These lines, totaling 95.2 line-kilometers, repeated the path of four lines from earlier AEM survey collected in December 1994 (released under USGS Open-File Report 02-101 downloadable at https://pubs.er.usgs.gov/publication/ofr02101). Electromagnetic data were acquired with Dighem VRES frequency-domain system. Magnetic data were collected with a Scintrex CS2 cesium-vapor magnetometer. The nominal elevation of the electromagnetic system was 30 m. This data release includes raw and processed AEM data. This release also...

This dataset consists of values representing the generalized thickness (in feet) of regolith sediments (alluvium, colluvium, and weathered bedrock) overlying well-consolidated bedrock in the Lower Gunnison River Basin in Delta, Montrose, Ouray, and Gunnison Counties, Colorado. Regolith thickness in this dataset was derived from contours presented in the dataset rglth_contours. The U.S. Geological Survey prepared this dataset in cooperation with the Colorado Water Conservation Board.
This dataset includes the magnetotelluric (MT) sounding data collected in 2003 along a north-south profile west of Wendover, Nevada. It is important to know whether major mining districts in the Northern Nevada Gold Province are underlain by rocks of the Archean Wyoming craton, which are known to contain orogenic gold deposits, or by accreted rocks of the Paleoproterozoic Mojave province. It is also important to know the location and orientation of the Archean/Proterozoic suture zone between these provinces as well as major basement structures within these terranes because they may influence subsequent patterns of sedimentation, deformation, magmatism, and hydrothermal activity. This study was funded by the U.S....
The water resources in Tennessee are likely to be stressed in the future by factors such as population increase, urban and suburban development, climate change, and other competing demands. Water-resource managers and policy makers will need accurate water-use data for regional water-supply planning including infrastructure investment, conservation, and cost-recovery strategies. Quantifying public-supply and self-supplied industrial water use and relating the use to effects on -water resources and natural hydrologic systems; is important for the public and policy makers. This dataset includes public-supply water-use and self-supplied industrial water-use information for the State of Tennessee in 2010. Public supply...

The glacial aquifer system of the United States encompasses all or parts of 25 states and is the most widely used supply of drinking water in the Nation (Maupin and Barber, 2005; Maupin and Arnold, 2010). A series of seven raster data sets were derived from a database of water-well drillers' records that was compiled in partial fulfillment of the goals of the U.S. Geological Survey’s Groundwater Availability and Use assessment program (U.S. Geological Survey, 2002). They contain hydrogeologic information for areas of the U.S. that are north of the southern limit of Pleistocene glaciation, including the total thickness of glacial deposits, thickness of coarse-grained sediment within the glacial deposits, specific-capacity...

Groundwater is a vital resource to the Mississippi embayment region of the central United States. Regional and integrated assessments of water availability that link physical flow models and water quality in principal aquifer systems provide context for the long-term availability of these water resources. An innovative approach using machine learning was employed to predict groundwater pH across drinking water aquifers of the Mississippi embayment. The region includes two principal regional aquifer systems; the Mississippi River Valley alluvial (MRVA) aquifer and the Mississippi embayment aquifer system that includes several regional aquifers and confining units. Based on the distribution of groundwater use for...
This dataset includes the audio-magnetotelluric (AMT) sounding data collected in 2009 in and near the San Luis Basin, New Mexico. The U.S. Geological Survey conducted a series of multidisciplinary studies, including AMT surveys, in the San Luis Basin to improve understanding of the hydrogeology of the Santa Fe Group and the nature of the sedimentary deposits comprising the principal groundwater aquifers of the Rio Grande rift. The shallow unconfined and the deeper confined Santa Fe Group aquifers in the San Luis Basin are the main sources of municipal water for the region. The population of the San Luis Basin region is growing rapidly and water shortfalls could have serious consequences. Future growth and land management...

The alluvial aquifer of the Mississippi embayment lies within a syncline plunging south towards the Gulf of Mexico with the axis of the syncline roughly following the Mississippi River (Cushing and others, 1964, Hart and others, 2008). The trough of the syncline is comprised of alluvial and terrace deposits of Quaternary age (Ackerman, 1996). A potentiometric-surface map of the Mississippi River Valley alluvial aquifer represents the altitude at which water would stand in tightly cased wells completed at any location within the study area (Schrader, 2015). Using the altitude of water levels measured in the study area, the potentiometric-surface map depicts points of equal altitude with contours denoting a given...

Of the approximately 6.6 million people living in the Mississippi embayment (MISE) region in the central United States, approximately 65 percent rely on groundwater for their drinking water (Dieter, Linsey, and others, 2017). Regional assessments of water quality in principal aquifer systems provide context for the long-term availability of these water resources for drinking-water supplies. To assess the current (2018) status of water quality in MISE in relation to drinking water supplies, groundwater withdrawal zones used for domestic and public supply were modeled using available groundwater well and hydrogeologic framework data. Three dimensional surfaces were modeled to map the depth zones at which groundwater...

This digital dataset was created as part of a U.S. Geological Survey study, done in cooperation with the Sonoma County Water Agency and the City of Petaluma, to be used as the digital hydrogeologic input data for numerical simulation of the groundwater system of the Petaluma Valley Watershed, Sonoma County, California. Elevation, thickness, and extent of the hydrostratigraphic units define the geohydrologic layering of the digital framework model. The location of faults may be used to define the location of potential horizontal flow barriers in numerical simulation of the groundwater system. The intended uses of this dataset include, but are not limited to, natural resource modeling, mapping, and visualization applications....

From April 2013 to August 2015, the U.S. Geological Survey, in cooperation with the Town of Enfield and the Tompkins County Planning Department, collected horizontal-to-vertical seismic soundings at 69 locations in the Enfield Creek valley to help determine thickness of the unconsolidated deposits and depth to bedrock. The HVSR technique, commonly referred to as the passive-seismic method, is used to estimate the thickness of unconsolidated sediments and the depth to bedrock (Lane and others, 2008). The passive-seismic method uses a single, broad-band three-component (two horizontal and one vertical) seismometer to record ambient seismic noise. In areas that have a strong acoustic contrast between the bedrock and...
