Global Geochemical Database for Critical Minerals in Archived Mine Samples The Critical Minerals in Archived Mine Samples Database (CMDB) contains chemistry and geologic information for historic ore and ore-related rock samples from mineral deposits in the United States. In addition, the database contains samples from archetypal deposits from 27 other countries in North America, South America, Asia, Africa and Europe. Germanium, which is currently classified as a critical mineral in the U.S., is also extracted as a byproduct from deposits in Alaska, Washington, and Tennessee. However, there is no public information that documents germanium production from these deposits. Current annual production of refined germanium is led by China at 85,000 tons, while estimates place U.S. reserves near 2,500 tons. The concentrations of major elements are reported in oxide weight percent by wavelength dispersive x-ray fluorescence (WDXRF), the concentrations for sixty elements are reported in elemental weight percent (pct) or parts per million (ppm) from inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometry-mass spectrometry ICP-OES-MS analysis, mercury is reported in ppm by cold vapor atomic absorption spectrometry (CVAAS), and ammonium in ppm from automated colorimetry analysis. This data release only includes sites with publicly available records of past production of tin, or a defined resource of tin, or both. The inclusion of a particular mineral deposit in this database is not meant to imply that it has economic potential; it may be produced only as a byproduct at some sites. Rather, these deposits were included to capture the distribution of characteristics of the known, reported tin deposits in the United States. The objective of those projects was to describe the geology, determine petrologic and geochemical characteristics, or to evaluate the mineral resource potential of Federal Lands and adjacent study areas. For this data release, only one deposit in the U.S. with historic production records was found: Butte, Montana. We did not locate any deposits in the U.S. that list Te resources. Production facilities, such as the ASARCO LLC’s copper refinery in Amarillo, Texas are not included within this database. Tellurium is necessary for strategic, consumer, and commercial applications.
