Responses of near-surface permafrost and glacial ice to climate change are of particular significance for understanding long-term effects on global carbon cycling and carbon export by high-latitude northern rivers. Here we report ?14C-dissolved organic carbon (DOC) values and dissolved organic matter optical data for the Yukon River, 15 tributaries of the Yukon River, glacial meltwater, and groundwater and soil water end-member sources draining to the Yukon River, with the goal of assessing mobilization of aged DOC within the watershed. Three episodes of strong basal motion occurred at Trapridge Glacier, Yukon Territory, Canada, on 11 June 1995 following the establishment of a connected subglacial drainage system. Responses to these "spring events" are noted in the records for 42 instruments and were recorded throughout the similar to 60 000 m super(2) study area. Strong basal motion during the events is indicated by ploughmeter, load-bolt and vertical-strain records, and abrupt pressure changes in several transducer records denote damage caused by extreme pressure pulses. Annual export of major and trace solutes are determined for the Yukon River based on summing 42 tributary contributions. First we show that annual discharge of the Yukon River can be computed by summing calculated annual discharges from 42 tributaries using a previously published regional regression equation. Next, annual loads for 11 solutes are determined by combining annual discharge with point measurements of solute concentrations in tributary river water. Based on the sum of tributary contributions we find that the Yukon River discharges approximately 211 km super(3) yr super(-1) of water and 33 million metric tons of dissolved solids each year at Pilot Station, AK. Floodplain stratigraphy is used as a new method for reconstructing ice jam flood histories of northern rivers. The method, based on reconstruction of the sedimentary record of vertically-accreting floodplains, relies on stratigraphic logging and interpretation of floodplain sediments, which result from successive ice jam floods, and radiocarbon dating of inter-flood organic material for chronology. In a case study along a reach of the Yukon River that straddles the Yukon-Alaska border, the method is used to develop a record of ice jam flooding for the last 2000 years. As part of a deep ice-core drilling project, GPS and ice-radar measurements were made in the vicinity of Aurora Peak, Alaska, USA. Surface and bed elevation maps were obtained over an area of 400 m x 700 m, which includes the drilling site. Surface flow velocity was measured at 18 locations in the same area. The results showed that the drilling site was situated on a gentle north-south ridge with saddle-shaped surface geometry. The horizontal ice-flow velocity at the drilling site was <0.5 ma super(-1) and the ice generally flowed eastward and westward along the surface slope.
