These data are the raw total mercury (THg) concentrations in whole feathers, feather homogenates, and feather components (i.e., rachis, vane, calamus) that are presented in the Journal Article "Mercury concentrations vary within and among individual bird feathers: A critical evaluation and guidelines for feather use in mercury monitoring programs" in Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry by Peterson et al.

The dataset catalogs and describes existing online, federally supported databases and tools dealing with various aspects of a potential national early detection and rapid response invasive species framework. Version 1.0 of this dataset (accessible as a download below, called "deprecated_EDDR databases and tools-20190325.zip") is supplementary material 2 and 3 to the manuscript, "Envisioning a national invasive species information framework" published as part of a special open source issue dealing with invasive species early detection and rapid response by the journal Biological Invasions, Volume 22, Issue 1, January 2020. Version 2.0 (accessible as a download below, called "EDDR databases and tools_V2-0_20200429.xlsx")...

THIS IS A HISTORICAL RECORD. As of December 17, 2021, the BISON application will no longer be available online and has been replaced by https://www.gbif.us. The BISON APIs are still available at https://bison.usgs.gov/#api and the Integrated Publishing Toolkit is still available at https://bison.usgs.gov/ipt. The USGS Biodiversity Information Serving Our Nation (BISON) project is an online all-species mapping information system consisting of a large collection of species occurrence datasets (e.g., plants and animals) found in the United States, U.S. Territories, U.S. marine Exclusive Economic Zones (EEZ), and Canada, with relevant geospatial layers. Species occurrences are records of organisms at a particular...
The diversion of freshwater from the Mississippi River is intended to mitigate saltwater intrusion from the Gulf of Mexico and to lessen the concomitant loss of wetland areas. Though effective, freshwater diversion can affect wildlife and habitat; therefore, prediversion and postdiversion data collections are necessary to identify effects. The Davis Pond freshwater diversion area is located between the Mississippi River and Bayou Lafourche and extends to Barataria Bay Basin, Louisiana. Results and interpretations from the prediversion biomonitoring done in 2001- which included data on fish, eagles, and bivalves - are presented in the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Scientific Investigations Report 2008-5067, "Davis...

Twenty-two high-elevation lakes (> 3000 m) in Rocky Mountain National Park and Indian Peaks Wilderness Area, Colorado, were surveyed during summer 1998 to explore relationships among benthic invertebrates, water chemistry (particularly nitrate concentrations), and other environmental variables. Water samples were collected from the deepest portion of each lake and analyzed for ions and other water chemistry parameters. Benthic invertebrates were collected from the littoral zone using both a sweep net and Hess sampler. Physical and geographical measurements were derived from maps. Relationships among benthic invertebrate assemblages and environmental variables were examined using canonical correspondence analysis,...

This dataset comprises whole blood mercury concentrations, sex, predicted age, snout-vent length, and body mass index in American alligators (Alligator mississippiensis) captured at Yawkey Wildlife Center, South Carolina, from 2010 to 2017. A companion dataset for the Florida population located at Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge (Nilsen et al. 2019) can be found on the Mendeley repository at https://data.mendeley.com/datasets/vycpgt6ycf/1. Funding for this study was provided by the U.S. Geological Survey (Cooperative Agreement nos. G12AC20329, G15AC00264) and the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (Grant nos. 2009094, 20100899). Alligators are an effective sentinel species for Hg biomonitoring...

Note: this data release has been superseded by version 2.0, available here: https://doi.org/10.5066/P9G8TM2S This dataset contains the number of captured individuals recorded for each amphibian species surveyed in all wetlands in the Cottonwood Lake Study Area, Stutsman County, North Dakota. While amphibians were the target of the surveys, reptiles (i.e., turtles, snakes) were also sometimes captured over the course of the surveys and are included in the data file.

A major challenge in the biological monitoring of stream ecosystems in protected wilderness areas is discerning whether temporal changes in community structure are significantly outside of a reference condition that represents natural or acceptable annual variation in population cycles. Otherwise sites could erroneously be classified as impaired. Long-term datasets are essential for understanding these trends, to ascertain whether any changes in community structure significantly beyond the reference condition are permanent shifts or with time move back to within previous limits. To this end, we searched for long-term (>8 years) quantitative data sets of macroinvertebrate communities in wadeable rivers collected...
