A limited amount of valid scientific information about global climate change and its detrimental impacts has reached the public and exerted a positive impact on the public policy process or future planning for adaptation and mitigation. This project was designed to address this limitation by bringing together expertise in the social and communication sciences from targeted academic institutions affiliated with the Department of the Interior’s Climate Science Centers (CSCs) through a workshop. The project team brought together expertise in the social and communication sciences from targeted academic institutions, particularly experts and scholars who are affiliated with the nation’s CSCs, by means of an invited...

During November 2018, the Camp Fire burned more than 150,000 acres in Butte County, California. The fire was the deadliest and most destructive in California history, destroying more than 18,000 structures and causing at least 85 fatalities. The U.S. Geological Survey sampled surface water in areas affected by the Camp Fire, plus an unburned control site, during two post-fire sampling events, January 21-23, 2019 and February 28 - March 1, 2019. During each of those two sampling events, surface-water samples were collected at 8 stream locations. These 16 water samples were filtered using filters with multiple pore sizes (1.2 µm, 0.8 µm, 0.45 µm, and 0.22 µm) to evaluate colloid transport of trace elements. The filtrates...

A sensitivity analysis of groundwater-recharge estimates from a water-budget model was completed for the islands of Oahu and Maui, Hawaii (Johnson and others, 2023). Results of the sensitivity analysis were used to quantify the relative importance of selected model parameters to recharge estimates for three moisture zones (dry, mesic, and wet) on Oahu and Maui. These shapefiles contain the boundaries of the moisture zones and boundaries of the model subareas that were used in the model simulations for Oahu and Maui. Attributes in the shapefiles include the names of the land-cover types assigned to model subareas and the mean annual recharge values determined for the model subareas for the baseline scenario of the...

The storage assessment unit (SAU) is the fundamental unit used in the National Assessment of Geologic Carbon Dioxide Storage Resources project for the assessment of geologic CO2 storage resources. The SAU is shown here as a geographic boundary interpreted, defined, and mapped by the geologist responsible for the assessment interval. Individual SAUs are defined on the basis of common geologic and hydrologic characteristics. The resource that is assessed is the mass of CO2 that can be stored in the technically accessible pore volume of a storage formation. The technically accessible storage resource is one that may be available using present-day geological and engineering knowledge and technology for CO2 injection...

This geopackage contains the density strata that were used to create the Alaska Arctic Coastal Plain Aerial Breeding Pair Survey four-year rotating panel design. This file was derived from a mid-1980’s ArcInfo coverage for the North Slope Eider Survey that was produced through the visual interpretation of 1:250,000-scale LANDSAT imagery and the known nesting density waterfowl in the area.

This geopackage contains the density strata that were used to create the YKD Coastal Zone Survey’s current four-year rotating panel design. This file was derived from a mid-1980’s ArcInfo coverage, ‘Sampling Intensity’ (“SI arc”) that was produced through the visual interpretation of 1:250,000-scale LANDSAT imagery and the nesting density of cackling Canada geese.

These data were collected by a SonTek Argonaut-XR 3000-MHz 3D acoustic Doppler current meter (ADCM) that was mounted on an approximately 75-pound mounting plate. The ADCM was deployed on the bottom of River Raisin at approximately 41.899978°N, -83.353548°E and took measurements from August 17-September 13, 2023. These data were collected in cooperation with U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA), to provide them with data that may help them better understand water velocities caused by river currents, ship traffic, or anything else that could cause the erosion of a 'cap' installed on the river bed that was designed to prevent the dispersion of contaminated soil. In reviewing the data it was noticed that on...

If current climate change trends continue, rising sea levels could inundate low-lying islands across the globe. The Northwestern Hawaiian Islands (NWHI) is a group of islands of great conservation importance that is threatened by sea-level rise. Stretching 2,000 km beyond the main Hawaiian Islands, the NWHI are a World Heritage Site and part of the Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument. The islands support the largest tropical seabird rookery in the world, providing breeding habitat for 21 species of seabirds, 4 land bird species, and essential habitat for other resident and migratory wildlife. Because these are low-lying islands, even small increases in sea-level could result in the loss of critical habitat,...

This multi-layer GeoPackage (“VCF_AnalysisStrata”) contains density layers that stratify spectacled eiders into low, medium, and high density classes on the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta Coastal Zone over two time periods: 1985-1994 and 1995-2015. The (“SPEI_1985to1994_6strata”) and (“SPEI_1995to2015_6strata”) layers were created using ground-based nest data that was log-transformed, interpotated by ordinary kriging methods, and classified into low (0-1.60 km^2), medium (1.60-3.50 km^2), and high (>3.50 km^2) nest density classes. Different visibility correction factors (VCFs) were calculated for each density strata based on the relationship between the nest and aerial survey data. These correction factors are used to produce...

The CoRE (Contractions or Range Expansions) database contains a library of published literature and data on species range shifts in response to climate change. Through a systematic review of publications returned from searches on Google Scholar, Web of Science, and Scopus, we selected primary research articles that documented or attempted to document species-level distribution shifts in animal or plant species in response to recent anthropogenic climate change. We extracted data in four broad categories: (i) basic study information (study duration, location, data quality and methodological factors); (ii) basic species information (scientific names and taxonomic groups); (iii) information on the observed range shifts...

This study set out to answer the question: “What data and modeling frameworks are needed to provide scientists reliable, climate-informed, water temperature estimates for freshwater ecosystems that can assist watershed management decision making?” To accomplish this, the study gathered existing stream temperature data, identified data gaps, deployed stream temperature monitoring devices, and developed and tested a stream temperature model that could be regionalized across the Northeast domain. We partnered with another funded project team, led by Jana Stewart at WI USGS to collect data from over 10,000 locations across the climate science center domain. This collection effort aided in identifying data gaps where...

We routinely encounter uncertainty when we make decisions – from picking a new morning coffee to choosing where to live. Even decisions that are supported by science contain some level of remaining uncertainty. In the context of conservation and wildlife management, the potential for uncertainty to influence decisions is perhaps most obvious when we think about predicting how actions (or non-actions) will have lasting impacts into the future. Our abilities to precisely predict future climatic and ecological conditions and determine the exact consequences of our actions are, and will remain, limited. Conservation practitioners and land and wildlife managers must navigate these challenges to make science-informed...
