This project evaluates the connections between climate change impacts and health in Bristol Bay communities. Climate change impacts were assessed through the lens of public health, with an eye towards the potential effects on disease, injury, food and water security, and mental health. Three focal communities were included in this assessment: Nondalton, a lake community, Levelock, a river community, and Pilot Point, a coastal community. The resulting assessment reports will be used to assist focal communities, as well as neighboring communities, in addressing climate-change related issues.

This project evaluated the potential impacts of storm surges and relative sea level rise on nesting geese and eider species that commonly breed on the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta (Y-K Delta). Habitat suitability maps for breeding waterbirds were developed to identify current waterbird breeding habitat and distributions. Short-term climate change impacts were assessed by comparing nest densities in relation to magnitude of storms that occurred in the prior fall from 2000-2013. Additionally, nest densities were modeled using random forests in relation to the time-integrated flood index (e.g., a storm specific measure accounting for both water depth and duration of flooding) for four modeled storms (2005, 2006, 2009, and...

The YKD is also home to the largest subsistence-based economy in Alaska. Yet, the low-lying landscape mosaic characterizing the YKD is at risk of massive change associated with projected sea level rise (SLR), increasing storm frequency and severity and permafrost degradation due to future climate change. Therefore, to conserve ecosystem services associated with the botanical and faunal richness in the YKD, management strategies in the region should not only be based on current ecosystem conditions, but also incorporate projected changes in landscape composition. The goal of this project is to provide managers and people living in the YKD, an assessment of the vulnerability of the landscape to future change and to...
The environment is rapidly changing and global warming brings impacts to all forms of life. This report is about the effects of a changing climate on the human environment and changes to communities and peoples’ lives. The best measures of change are the observations of people who live and work here, travel the trails, watch the weather, and harvest food from the land and sea. By listening, we learn the nature of the changes that are occurring, and gain insight into the causes and specific implications to people and the adaptations that are being developed and used every day. People of the Alaska are excellent observers of environmental change because of their local knowledge and expertise about the weather, wildlife,...

Viable sockeye salmon populations are critical to the economy, culture, and freshwater ecosystems of Bristol Bay in Western Alaska, and it is unclear how populations might respond to warming temperatures during the critical life history stages of spawning and embryo incubation. The overarching goal of the project is to understand how temperature might influence population-specific patterns of embryo incubation, timing of hatching and fry emergence, and sockeye salmon embryo survival. By combining analyses of data from two large lake systems in the Kvichak watershed, laboratory rearing experiments to elucidate functional relationships, and simulation modeling, this project quantifies biological responses to changing...
The Yukon–Kuskokwim Delta of Alaska,USAis a globally important region for numerous avianspecies including millions of migrating and nesting waterbirds. However, data on the current spatial distributionof critical nesting areas and the importance of environmental variables in the selection of nest locations aregenerally lacking for waterbirds in this region. We modeled nest densities for 6 species of geese and eiders thatcommonly breed on the Yukon–Kuskokwim Delta, including cackling goose (Branta hutchinsii minima),emperor goose (Chen canagica), black brant (B. bernicla nigricans), greater white-fronted goose (Anser albifronsfrontalis), spectacled eider (Somateria fischeri), and common eider (S. mollissima).Thedata...

The Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta of Alaska is a globally important region for numerous avian species including millions of migrating and nesting waterbirds. Climate change effects such as sea level rise and increased storm frequency and intensity have the potential to impact waterbird populations and breeding habitat in the near future. In order to determine the potential impacts of these climate-mediated changes, it is important to monitor the current spatial distribution of important nesting areas and understand the importance of environmental variables in the selection of nest locations. To do this, we modeled nest density for 15 species or composite species of waterbirds that commonly breed on the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta,...

This report is structured around the specific objectives in the format of three stand-alone manuscripts that are in the process of submission to peer-reviewed journals. The first manuscript includes objectives 1-2, the second manuscript addresses objective 3, and the final manuscript objective 4. The overarching goal of the proposal was to understand how both recently experienced and projected water temperatures might influence population-specific patterns of embryo incubation, timing of hatching and fry emergence, and survival of sockeye salmon embryos. Additionally, we sought to explore the potential for adaptation in a heritable threshold life history trait that shapes whether an individual migrates to the ocean...

An assessment of climate change impacts on communities in the Bering Strait Region was conducted by three tribal organizations, the Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium, the Norton Sound Health Corporation, and Kawerak Inc. The purpose was to evaluate the broad range of climate change impacts observed by community members, to identify potential health effects, and to raise awareness and provide guidance that community leadership and the tribal health system could use to help guide planning and intervention activities. This presentation will explore the process and review findings from the project as well as providing an overview of some of the recommendations.

An important unresolved question is how populations of coldwater-dependent fishes will respond to rapidly warming water temperatures. For example, the culturally and economically important group, Pacific salmon (Oncorhynchus spp.), experience site-specific thermal regimes during early development that could be disrupted by warming. To test for thermal local adaptation and heritable phenotypic plasticity in Pacific salmon embryos, we measured the developmental rate, survival, and body size at hatching in two populations of sockeye salmon (Oncorhynchus nerka) that overlap in timing of spawning but incubate in contrasting natural thermal regimes. Using a split half-sibling design, we exposed embryos of 10 families...

The Bristol Bay region represents an area of transition between the maritime climate of the southern coast and the continental climate of the Interior and Copper River Basin. These regions are largely protected by mountains areas and do not have a strong maritime influence. Temperatures are moderate and sea ice does form in the Bristol Bay but complete freeze-up of these waterways is not common. Low winter temperatures are below 0 degrees F with events below -20F. Summer temperatures are generally in the mid 60s with only a few days above 80. Highest precipitation is in August and September (Shulsky and Wendler 2007). The following table is a scoping tool that can be used to begin to evaluate community vulnerability...

This report documents climate change impacts and potential impacts as described by the local people and interpreted through the lens of public health. It is the sixth report in a series describing climate change across Alaska, and the first report to focus on the Bristol Bay Region. In the Yupik and Aleut community of Pilot Point residents report changes to the weather, landscape, plants and wildlife. Extreme weather events are thought to be more common, the timing of seasons is more unpredictable, erosion to shorelines is occurring at a rapid rate, and consequentially, vulnerability to flooding is increasing. Identified health concerns include food security, damage to health-critical infrastructure, injury and...
