Synopsis: Using multi-scale seasonal models, this study explored how broad scale landscape context and local resource heterogeneity influenced local resource selection among threatened forest-dwelling woodland caribou in southern Quebec. Caribou consistently avoided roads, however researchers identified thresholds in road proximity effects. The threshold distance at which caribou avoid roads is 1.25 km for active roads and 0.75 km from derelict roads. Open lichen woodlands were an important cover type for caribou during winter and spring, whereas deciduous forests, wetlands, and even young disturbed stands became important during calving and summer. Nutritional restrictions in winter may reduce the availability of protein for reproduction and survival in northern ungulates. We refined a technique that uses recently voided excreta on snow to assess protein status in wild caribou (Rangifer tarandus) in late winter. Our study was the first application of this non-invasive, isotopic approach to assess protein status of wild caribou by determining dietary and endogenous contributions of nitrogen (N) to urinary urea. The Chisana caribou herd (CCH) is a small international herd occurring in Yukon and Alaska on the Klutlan Plateau and near the headwaters of the White River. During the 1990s through 2003, the herd experienced a long and steady decline in population. Low recruitment, predation, climate, habitat, and harvest pressure likely all contributed to the decline. From 2003 to 2006, a recovery effort designed to increase recruitment and calf survival was conducted. To conserve woodland caribou, resource managers and biologists must understand the processes governing movements and distribution of those animals. I employed a scale-explicit approach to understand some of the mechanisms influencing caribou behaviour. I trailed caribou in forested and alpine habitats and recorded attributes of feeding sites and patches. At larger scales, I used GPS collars to record the movements of caribou. At the scale of the feeding site, caribou cratered at locations with lower snow depths and greater amounts of a variety of terrestrial lichen species.
