Marine biodiversity is a key component of ocean health. Monitoring and understanding marine biodiversity is essential for our ability to forecast and respond to changes. The goal of the Arctic Marine Biodiversity Observing Network (AMBON) project is to demonstrate and build an operational marine biodiversity observing network from microbes to whales, integrating diversity levels from genetic to organismal. AMBON field region is located on the Chukchi Sea continental shelf in the US Arctic as a region exposed to climatic changes and anthropogenic influences. This dataset contains biomass and abundance data collected in the Chukchi Sea during the August 2017 Arctic Marine Biodiversity Observing Network (AMBON) research...

This dataset includes a reference baseline used by the Digital Shoreline Analysis System (DSAS) to calculate rate-of-change statistics for the exposed coast of Alaska from Icy Cape and Cape Prince Wales for the time period 1948 to 2016. This baseline layer serves as the starting point for all transects cast by the DSAS application and can be used to establish measurement points used to calculate shoreline-change rates.

Nearshore bathymetry is a vital link that joins offshore water depths to coastal topography. Seamless water depth information is a critical input parameter for reliable storm surge models, enables the calculation of sediment budgets, and is necessary baseline data for a range of coastal development decisions. Bathymetric data collection capabilities of an active coastal geohazard field program operated by the Alaska Division of Geological & Geophysical Surveys (DGGS) were expanded in 2012. Resultant datasets presented in this report include nearshore bathymetric measurements of critical shallow-water coastal areas in the vicinity of six western Alaska communities: Gambell, Golovin, Hooper Bay, Savoonga, Shishmaref,...

This dataset contains morphological measures of Pacific walruses sampled in the Chukchi and Bering Seas between 1972 and 1991. From 1972 through 1991 the Soviet Union employed industrial methods to harvest and process Pacific walruses to enhance the Russian Far East economy. Under the oversight of the Pacific branch of the Soviet All-Union Scientific Investigational Institute of Marine Fisheries and Oceanography (VNIRO), offshore harvesting crews worked from specialized marine mammal hunting ships (ZRS) throughout the spring, summer, and early autumn in the marginal sea ice habitats of the Bering and Chukchi Seas. They launched small (~7 m) wooden boats to approach walruses resting on ice pans, which were dispatched...

This part of the data release presents digital elevation models (DEMs) spanning the ocean shoreline of Alaska from Icy Cape to Cape Prince of Wales. Aerial images were collected, and data were processed, by Fairbanks Fodar (https://www.fairbanksfodar.com) in Fairbanks, Alaska, for the U.S. Geological Survey. The aerial images, from which the DEMs were created, were collected in 2016 between August 29 and September 4 and extend from the shoreline to 400-4000 meters inland. The aerial images were collected with precise Global Positioning System (GPS) navigation data from a manned aircraft and were then processed into DEMs photogrammetrically using structure-from-motion (SFM) processing methods as described in Nolan...

A suite of morphological metrics were derived from existing shoreline and elevation datasets for barrier islands and spits located along the north-slope coast of Alaska between Cape Beaufort and the U.S.-Canadian border. This dataset includes shoreline vectors, including data source and acquisition date, from five time periods: 1950s, 1980s, 2000s, 2010s, and 2020s. The shoreline vectors were combined to produce polygons upon which the metrics were calculated.

This dataset consists of short-term (~33 years) shoreline change rates for the north coast of Alaska between Point Barrow and Icy Cape. Rate calculations were computed within a GIS using the Digital Shoreline Analysis System (DSAS) version 4.3, an ArcGIS extension developed by the U.S. Geological Survey. Short-term rates of shoreline change were calculated using an end point rate-of-change method based on available shoreline data between 1979 and 2012. A reference baseline was used as the originating point for the orthogonal transects cast by the DSAS software. Transects intersect each shoreline establishing measurement points, which are then used to calculate short-term rates.
