The USGS Wyoming-Montana Water Science Center (WY–MT WSC) completed a report (Sando and McCarthy, 2018) documenting methods for peak-flow frequency analysis following implementation of the Bulletin 17C guidelines. The methods are used to provide estimates of peak-flow quantiles for 50-, 42.9-, 20-, 10-, 4-, 2-, 1-, 0.5-, and 0.2-percent annual exceedance probabilities (AEPs) for selected streamgages operated by the WY–MT WSC. This data release presents peak-flow frequency analyses for selected streamgages in and near the Milk River Basin, Montana, that were based on methods described by Sando and McCarthy (2018).

This part of DS 781 presents data for the transgressive contours for the depth-to-transition map of the Pigeon Point to Monterey, California, map region. The vector file is included in T "TransgressiveContours_PigeonPointToMonterey.zip," which is accessible from https://doi.org/10.5066/F7N29V0Z. As part of the USGS's California State Waters Mapping Project, a 50-m grid of sediment thickness for the seafloor within the limit of California’s State Waters between Pigeon Point and southern Monterey Bay was generated from seismic-reflection data collected in 2009 and 2010 (USGS activities (S-15-10-NC, S-N1-09-MB, and S-06-11-MB) supplemented with outcrop and geologic structure from DS 781. The resulting grid covers was...

This data set contains daily survival rates from 81 studies of passerine obligate grassland bird species that primarily breed in the United States; patch size information was extracted when available. Temperature and precipitation variables were calculated for the study sites and years the data were collected. The studies we used collected data across the period 1978 to 2013.

The U.S. Geological Survey South Atlantic Water Science Center, in cooperation with the South Carolina Department of Transportation, implemented a South Carolina StreamStats application in 2018. This shapefile dataset contains vector lines representing streams, rivers, and ditches that were used in preparing the underlying data for the South Carolina StreamStats application. Data were compiled from multiple sources, but principally represent lidar-derived linework from the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources and the South Carolina Lidar Consortium. The South Carolina hydrography lines were created from elevation rasters that ranged from 4 to 10 ft resolution, to produce a product of approximately 1:6,000-scale....

Multispectral remote sensing data acquired by Landsat 8 Operational Land Imager (OLI) sensor were analyzed using an automated technique to generate surficial mineralogy and vegetation maps of the conterminous western United States. Six spectral indices (e.g. band-ratios), highlighting distinct spectral absorptions, were developed to aid in the identification of mineral groups in exposed rocks, soils, mine waste rock, and mill tailings across the landscape. The data are centered on the western U.S. and cover portions of Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, the Canada-U.S. border, and the Mexico-U.S. border during the summers of 2013 – 2014. Methods used to process the images and algorithms used to infer mineralogical composition...

Multispectral remote sensing data acquired by the Landsat 8 Operational Land Imager (OLI) sensor were analyzed using a new, automated technique to generate a map of exposed mineral and vegetation groups in the western San Juan Mountains, Colorado and the Four Corners Region of the United States (Rockwell and others, 2021). Spectral index (e.g. band-ratio) results were combined into displayed mineral and vegetation groups using Boolean algebra. New analysis logic has been implemented to exploit the coastal aerosol band in Landsat 8 OLI data and identify concentrations of iron sulfate minerals. These results may indicate the presence of near-surface pyrite, which can be a potential non-point source of acid rock drainage....

In the summer of 2014 at Pawtuckaway Beach at Pawtuckaway State Park in Nottingham New Hampshire, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) established a seasonal meteorological station (430508071091801) on the beach and a seasonal water-quality station (01073389) in Pawtuckaway Lake proximal to the swimming area. Data recorded at 15-minute intervals by the meteorological station were wind speed, wind direction, precipitation, barometric pressure, and relative humidity. Data recorded at 15-minute intervals by the water-quality station were air and water temperature, specific conductance, dissolved oxygen (DO), pH, and stage (water level), which characterized water conditions at the swimming area. In 2015 the USGS also established...

General Abstract/Purpose (70 words): Data were collected to assist in cost-benefit analysis of flood mitigation actions that could be taken by the U.S. and Canada to prevent structural damage and associated costs and losses in future flood conditions, including conditions worse than the historical record flooding in spring of 2011. Data were commissioned to revise or fill gaps in estimates from structural damage modeling software commonly used for depth-damage economic assessments of flood impacts. The Summary text that immediately follows this introductory sentence offers overview information, but also includes context and detail that is not present in the Word document ("Principal Indicator Combo SET - REVIEW...

Extant population monitoring and habitat assessment data sets of benthic species were used as inputs for occupancy models focused on Sicklefin and Sturgeon chub with the goals of describing temporal, spatial, and environmental factors associated with occupancy patterns of each chub species, assessing co-occurrence of the two species, and determining relationships between co-occurrence and environmental factors. We also used three-species occupancy models to assess co-occurrence of these chubs with other primarily benthic species. This data set is comprised of the outputs of these models.

The release of elements of concern (EoC) to surface water can involve both natural and anthropogenic sources. Elevated EoC concentrations can pose a risk to human health, wildlife, and ecosystem health, with the modes of toxicity and extent of risk varying as a function of the specific element, its chemical form and the matrix with which it is associated (for example, dissolved versus particulate). As part of the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Water Mission Area (WMA) Water Quality Processes Program, the Proxies (Surrogate) Project was created, in part, to develop models that can be used to estimate the concentration of EoC in riverine surface water at spatial scales ranging from (sub)basin to multi-basin. Three...
