This project connects scientists and managers from federal, tribal and state agencies and nongovernmental organizations to exchange information and establish common priorities for management of terrestrial wildlife populations. To achieve these goals, we are organizing interactive workshops with partners across the region. In year 2, we will assess the risk posed by climate change and other major stressors to a subset of priority species (as identified by regional partners). This assessment will integrate available data and scientific understanding in a transparent process, detailing assumptions and uncertainties to project population-level responses of target species to climate change.

This project supports the technical development of a mobile application for identifying and reporting invasive plant species in Alaska. It will result in a portable, digital version of a field guide that can be easily updated and that supports integration of reports into the Alaska Exotic Plants Information Clearinghouse (AKEPIC). Under development for both Android and iOS operating systems, the app has the potential to increase the public’s knowledge of invasive plants, as well an improve opportunities for reporting new occurrences. Describing the social network that links the interconnected partners is the first step to leverage the network’s capacity to be greater than the sum of its parts.The Northwest Boreal Landscape Conservation Cooperative partners and a social network scientist are applying social network theory to create a system of nodes and edges of a Conservation Social Network. The geodiversity approach uses topography to define landscape features. Topography can be a proxy for ecological function. For example, topography influences the solar radiation available for plants and animals, the soil characteristics through the likelihood for erosion and deposition, and the characteristics of hydrologic features. Therefore, similar geodiversity types should have the potential for similar ecological function even as the climate changes. We classified the landscape into three topographic feature categories: canyons, ridges, and slopes. Each topographic feature was then clustered into distinct geodiversity types. Boreal ecosystems are inherently dynamic and continually change over decades to millennia. The braided rivers that shape the valleys and wetlands continually change course, creating and removing vast wetlands and peatlands. Glacial melt, erosion, fires, permafrost dynamics, and wind-blown loess are among the shaping forces of the landscape. When climate change disrupts a village, city, state, or province, how do leaders respond? What unexpected obstacles do they run into? Researchers from the University of Saskatchewan want to know what factors are conducive to communities adapting to climate change. They also want to better characterize exactly what impedes progress. The team is investigating different models of adaptation ranging from top-down government planning to grassroots organization. The Northwest Boreal Landscape Conservation Cooperative (NWB LCC) is a partnership between agencies involved in land management across Alaska, Yukon, Northwest Territories, and British Columbia. The NWB LCC aims to coordinate science and support to decision makers for improving land management decisions. Knowledge gaps have been identified by the NWB LCC and are beginning to be filled. One of the priority information gaps is knowledge of the anthropogenic footprint currently on the landscape.The anthropogenic footprint is all the disturbance types made by various human activities, usually through some form of industrial development. The University of Oregon Environmental Studies Program (UO ENVS) is proposing to work with the North Pacific Landscape Conservation Cooperative in support of the Pacific Northwest Tribal Climate Change Project, which is aimed at building an understanding of the impacts that climate change may have on American Indian and Alaska Native tribal culture and sovereignty. This agreement will focus on supporting the Pacific Northwest Tribal Climate Change Project and developing resources that foster partnerships, knowledge exchange and outreach opportunities between tribes, climate scientists and other climate change partners in the region.

This project will provide a comprehensive synthesis of beaver recolonization science and techniques for successful reintroduction or population expansion through a thorough, in-depth, coordinated review of all North American beaver-related information, including identification of research gaps and data needs, and recommendations for project implementation. A strong data foundation is needed to inform science-based decisions for fisheries management at a watershed level. In preparation for a shift towards comprehensive watershed-scale planning, Arizona Game and Fish Department (AGFD) is developing a fisheries data management system with an initial focus on compiling and formatting several hundred thousand fish survey and stocking records. Executive Summary: We provide an analysis of Sonoran Desert water network connectivity to inform managers of current conditions for target wildlife and how the connectivity will change as the landscape becomes more water limited.Climate change is expected to lead to fragmentation of the network, increasing coalescence distance by 8% and reducing the persistence and overall number of waters on the landscape. Ecological Places in Cities, EPiC, is a network of cities and conservation groups working together towards a new vision that integrates nature’s benefits and natural defenses with the needs of our urban future. The Floodplain Forest Workshop that was held in Dubuque on September 15-17, 2015. The agenda included presentations and discussions regarding floodplain forest issues ranging from system level influences to floodplain forest threats to site level management. The program included a field trip and several breakout sessions including landscape level considerations, factors to consider when writing management prescriptions, identifying specific research needs, and discussing how to best collaborate and communicate moving forward. Products of the workshop included: detailed discussion notes; summary and map of the field trip; list of contacts; and a summary of what has happened since the workshop concluded.

Reports describe research by Iowa State University in collaboration with Neal Smith National Wildlife Refuge and other partners has discovered that strategically adding a little bit of prairie back onto the agricultural landscape can result in many benefits – for water and soil quality, habitat for wildlife and pollinators, as well as opportunities for biomass production. With assistance from ETPBR member USDA Farm Service Agency, research has shown how small amounts of native prairie vegetation integrated within corn and soybean row crops produce environmental benefits at levels disproportionately greater than their extent and in a cost effective manner.
