Data from a laboratory study undertaken at the U.S. Geological Survey to investigate solid/water partitioning of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in New Hampshire soils and biosolids are presented here. Soils and biosolids used for the experiments were collected using PFAS-free sampling equipment, air dried, gently homogenized, and sieved (soils only). Soil samples were collected from locations with known PFAS contamination (n = 5) and nearby sites with similar soil characteristics but low expected PFAS concentrations (n = 4). Finished biosolids were collected directly from facilities at the final stage of processing and before distribution. Air-dried soils and biosolids were then used for a series of...

Four dichloroacetamide herbicide safeners (AD-67, benoxacor, dichlormid, and furilazole) and two co-applied herbicides (acetochlor and metolachlor) were measured in water samples from 7 streams across Iowa and Illinois. Iowa water samples were collected from March 2016 to June 2017, and Illinois water samples were collected from September 2016 to June 2017. The compounds studied are applied to corn, and Iowa and Illinois are the two largest corn producing states in the U.S. The seven stream sites are all adjacent to agricultural fields in corn production. Water samples (1-L) were collected in amber glass bottles using a grab or depth weighted approach. With the exception of one site, Iowa River at Wapello (USGS...

Simulations of radial diffusion, adsorption, and reactions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) - trichloroethene (TCE), cis-1,2-dichloroethene (cDCE), vinyl chloride (VC), trichlorofluoroethene (TCFE) - and bromide (Br) in a porous media are conducted using rock properties identified from a mudstone aquifer in the Newark Basin, near West Trenton, New Jersey. The simulations are conducted using a finite-difference algorithm that was prepared for this investigation to solve the equation for radial diffusion, linear equilibrium adsorption, and zero- and first-order biodegradation. The simulations are conducted for a section of a rock matrix and the georeferencing is based on the locations of the well from which concentration...

Nitrapyrin, a nitrification inhibitor, 6-CPA, a nitrapyrin degradate, and three co-applied herbicides (acetochlor, atrazine, and metolachlor) were measured in surface drains from eights sites in Illinois. Water samples were collected from April to June 2017. The compounds studied are applied to corn, Illinois is one of the largest corn producing states in the U.S. Water samples (1-L) were collected in amber glass bottles using a grab or depth weighted approach. Water samples were filtered (0.7 micrometers), extracted via solid phase extraction (Oasis® MAX cartridge), and analyzed (nitrapyrin and herbicides by gas chromatography with mass-spectrometry; 6-CPA by liquid chromatography tandem mass-spectrometry).

Nitrapyrin, a nitrification inhibitor, and three co-applied herbicides (acetochlor, atrazine, and metolachlor) were measured in soil samples from an agricultural field in Iowa. Samples were collected from three locations in the field before and after nitrapyrin application in April-May 2017. Soils were collected using a 5-inch pipe that was hammered into the ground. Soil samples were extracted using pressurized solvent extraction (with dichloromethane), clean-up via solid phase extraction (carbon and alumina sorbents), and analyzed by gas chromatography with mass-spectrometry.

These data comprise air, plant (creosote bush, Larrea tridentata), and unsaturated-zone tritium measurements and plant metrics collected during 2012 to 2016 from three sampling areas at the Amargosa Desert Research Site (ADRS) near Beatty, Nevada: (1) within a low-level radioactive waste facility, (2) buffer area adjacent to the waste facility, and (3) reference area 3 kilometers from the waste facility. Plant metrics include foliage-water content and canopy and stem dimensions. Supporting information includes a list of publications that provide descriptions of methods used to collect the data and results of previous tritium research at the ADRS. All data and supporting information are compiled in an electronic...

Cr(VI) contaminated groundwater at Hinkley is undergoing bioremediation using added ethanol as a reductant in a volume of the aquifer defined as the In-situ Reduction Zone (IRZ). This treatment effectively reduces Cr(VI) to Cr(III) which is rapidly sequestered by sorption to aquifer particle surfaces and by co-precipitation within iron or manganese bearing minerals forming in place as reduction proceeds. Successful mitigation of the extant Cr(VI) plume is projected to require 90 to 220 years, at which time ethanol loading will likely cease. This projection assumes that Cr(VI) removal is permanent and that no Cr(III) will oxidize back to Cr(VI) in the event of changing hydrological conditions resulting in oxygen...
