Data set contains individual structures and use-areas identifiable from scanned images of 1944 hand-drawn map of buildings and facilities at Palmyra Atoll during World War II, at which time the atoll served as a training facility for the U.S. Navy. Scanned images were georeferenced against control points identifiable from 2007 QuickBird satellite imagery and on control points for which positional data were gathered during sampling in October and November 2008. Georeferenced image was then used to delineate individual structures and other areas as polygons. Attributes were taken from legend for 1944 map.

Coastal communities are uniquely vulnerable to sea-level rise and severe storms such as hurricanes. These events enhance the dispersion and concentration of natural and anthropogenic chemicals and pathogenic microorganisms that could adversely affect the health and resilience of coastal communities and ecosystems in subsequent years. The U.S. Geological Survey has developed the Sediment-Bound Contaminant Resiliency and Response (SCoRR) strategy to define baseline and post-event sediment-bound environmental health stressors. These data document the mid-range Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra and absorbance measurements as a function of wavelength with and without spectral corrections for selected stations...

Background: The New York State Departments of Environmental Conservation (NYS DEC) and Health (NYS DOH) are concerned about groundwater contamination in the carbonate-bedrock aquifers in New York, especially relating to the unintended introduction of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and liquid manure to these aquifers. These carbonate rocks form extensive aquifers that transmit, and can yield, water from solution-enlarged fractures, bedding planes, and other openings (Olcott, 1995). Groundwater contamination from liquid manure application (fecal coliform bacteria [E. coli] and nitrate) has been on the increase over the past decade as these incidents have been reported to the NYS DEC. Nitrate is highly water-soluble...

This 5-year update of the Integrated Natural Resources Management Plan (INRMP) has been prepared for Edwards Air Force Base (AFB), California, as required by the Sikes Improvement Act of 1997 and Air Force Instruction 32-7064, Integrated Natural Resources Management. The INRMP is based on ecosystem management principles and identifies responsibilities for management of natural resources, land use and mission activities and their potential effects on the environment, descriptions of the physical and ecosystem environments, mission impacts on natural resources, natural resources program management, and management goals and objectives. The INRMP also includes specific management methods, schedules of activities and...

REAs synthesize the best available information about resource conditions and trends within an ecoregion. They highlight and map areas of high ecological value, including important wildlife habitats and corridors, and gauge their potential risks from climate change, wildfires, invasive species, energy development, and urban growth. REAs also map areas that have high energy development potential, and relatively low ecological value, which could be best-suited for siting future energy development. In addition, REAs establish landscape-scale baseline ecological data to gauge the effect and effectiveness of future management actions. The Mojave Basin and Range REA was initiated in July 2010. It has been completed and...

The North American Environmental Atlas is an interactive mapping tool to research, analyze and manage environmental issues in Canada, United States and Mexico. Maps are downloadable free of charge and available in an easy to use map viewer format. The CEC uses maps in the Atlas to: •Identify priority areas to conserve biodiversity •Track cross-border transfers of pollutants •Monitor CO2 emissions across major transportation routes •Predict the spread of invasive species
