This project will support the design and development of a large-scale aquatics monitoring program across 1.5 million acres of the Crown of the Continent, as part of a 10-year, landscape-level restoration project established and funded by the U.S. Forest Service in 2010. We propose to work with the Rocky Mountain Partnership Forum to expand upon the successful approach applied in the first two years of this project to help managers incorporate climate change science into their natural resource management decisions for a new resource of interest that will be chosen by the Rocky Mountain Partner Forum members. Cutthroat trout (CT; Oncorhynchus clarki ssp.) are extremely imperiled owing to a variety of stressors. Changing climate is adding to these stressors that have already relegated CT in the Southern Rocky Mountains to less than 35% of their native habitat. The Rio Grande CT (O. c. virginalis) occupies 12% of its native range and is currently under review for ESA listing as federally threatened. The Colorado River Cutthroat Trout (CRCT) conservation team identified a need to further develop a long-term approach to updating and maintaining the CRCT GIS-based database that was created using the Inland Cutthroat Trout Protocol (ICP). Existing stream temperature data were compiled from numerous federal, state, tribal, and private sources to develop an integrated regional database. We propose a regional assessment of aquatic species vulnerabilities and responses to climate change as the basis for adaptive management for aquatic ecosystems in the Great Northern LCC, using the Transboundary Flathead Ecosystem as a case example.
