This project facilitates research within the North Slope science community through improved data sharing and collaboration. This is achieved through the development and implementation of secure data services (SDS) protocols within the North Slope Science Catalog. Implementation included: 1)Determine SDS protocols that will encourage data provider participation. These might include use request, login authorization, prescribed distribution intervals, use agreement and distribution tracking. Initial prototype would consider Migratory Bird Management requirements; 2)Develop Catalog web based SDS implementation that would promote protocols as identified above; This would require cooperative work between data providers...

Managers and scientists are working together in a new project to understand and optimally manage conservation lands along the Atlanta and Mississippi Flyways to support continental populations of waterbirds. It will advance the development of an integrated waterbird monitoring and management program to inform decision-makers and resource managers in an adaptive management context, resulting in improved resource contributions toward waterfowl, shorebirds, and long-legged waders. This project uses adaptive management and modeling tin an innovative way that incorporates their management expertise as well as new conservation planning and modeling tools. We are focusing on wetland-dependent migratory birds that use the...
This project will engage researchers from the University of Idaho to assist with a set of analysis tasks that will improve understanding of seabird population dynamics and environmental drivers at a regional scale based on prior survey efforts that have been focused at a colony scale. Specifically, we envision the development of a population model for a couple of index species like murres and kittiwakes, including evaluation of spatial clustering of populations that co-vary, in order to: 1) asses implications of covariates with identified mechanisms and appropriate temporal (pre-breeding condition, summer, rearing, overwinter survival, etc.) and spatial scales; 2) evaluate the feasibility of combining seabirds into...

This project includes the following tasks: Update the viewer to add the following components from future Blueprint versions and data products: a) Update Blueprint priority layer with future versions, and b) Update indicator charting at level of individual indicators and ecosystems. Develop pixel-level filtering feature: a) Build a user interface to allow users to filter the Blueprint by indicator value, and b) Set up appropriate computing resources, including cloud-hosted virtual machine and software installation. Scope and develop mobile responsive design: a) Investigate and develop strategy to incorporate mobile capability into the Simple Viewer, and b) Build compatible mobile responsive interface. Investigate...

The South Atlantic LCC website’s project section will be updated to feature an interactive listing of related projects. Users will be able to browse a full listing, filter on the fly by selecting relevant tags or entering search terms, and view details of individual projects. The applications development will take place against the existing SALCC database in Zoho Creator and the interface will be displayed on the existing https://www.fws.gov/science/catalog Ning site.

The purpose of Landscape Conservation Cooperatives (LCCs) is to inform the management of natural and cultural heritage resources in response to shifts in climate, habitat fragmentation and loss, and other landscape level challenges. The South Atlantic LCC’s mission is to “create a shared blueprint for landscape conservation actions that sustain natural and cultural resources” (South Atlantic LCC 2014) and to this end, has contracted with the Conservation Biology Institute (CBI) to release the first version of the Conservation Blueprint using the Data Basin (databasin.org) platform. The South Atlantic LCC seeks to iteratively refine the Conservation Blueprint and release future versions as necessary to achieve their...

Water availability, distribution, quality and quantity are critical habitat elements for fish and other water-dependent species. Furthermore, the availability of water is also a pre-requisite for a number of human activities. The density of weather and hydrology observation sites on the North Slope is orders of magnitude less than in other parts of the U.S., making it difficult to document hydrologic trends and develop accurate predictive models where water is a key input. The information that does exist is scattered among many entities, and varies in format. This multi-year data rescue effort project brought together scarce and scattered hydrology data sets, including high-priority datasets held by the Bureau of...
