We worked with state and federal partners to (1) edge match the Oklahoma and Texas Ecological Systems (ECS) datasets with a focus on the Texas and Oklahoma panhandle region, (2) complete an enduring features (ecological site type; geophysical setting) dataset for Oklahoma, and (3) create a process for updating the Ecological Systems (ES) map and dataset by detecting land cover change and modeling the revised ES types. Staff from the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) collected field data in support of edge matching, and to help better characterize and classify the ES types in the panhandle region of Texas and adjacent Oklahoma.

The Gulf Coast Prairie Landscape Conservation Cooperative (GCPLCC) has identified grassland habitats and species as priorities for conservation. The goal of the current effort is to (1) identify landscapes of importance at appropriate scale for further work, (2) develop GIS data and decisions support tools to facilitate further conservation efforts. MoRAP identified and mapped grassland landscapes based on neighborhood analysis of current land cover. This dataset includes urban, cropland, and ruderal land cover in order to attribute grassland patches with landscape context variables that may disturb grassland.
The circumboreal vegetation mapping (CBVM) project is an international collaboration among vegetation scientists to create a new vegetation map of the boreal region at a 1:7.5 million scale with a common legend and mapping protocol (Talbot and Meades 2011). The map is intended to portray potential natural vegetation, or the vegetation that would exist in the absence of human or natural disturbance, rather than existing vegetation that is commonly generated at larger scales. This report and map contributes to the CBVM effort by developing maps of bioclimatic zones, geographic sectors with similar floristic variability, and vegetation in boreal Alaska, Yukon, northwestern British Columbia, and a mountainous portion...

The primary objective of the research is to develop a rule-based decision support system to predict the relative vulnerability of nearshore species to climate change. The approach is designed to be applicable to fishes and invertebrates with limited data by predicting risk from readily avialable data, including species’ biogeographic distributions and natural history attributes. By evaluating multiple species and climate stressors, the approach allows an assessment of climate vulnerability acorss habitat types and the impact of specific climate alterations as well as their cumulative impact. A website with a rule-based application for rockfish and crabs is availalble at http://cbrat.org/.
The South Atlantic Landscape Conservation Cooperative (SALCC) project area supports a wide variety of critical estuarine and marine habitats. However, the existing maps of these resources were created at different scales and are housed in a variety of locations. This can be challenging for users and limits their utility for a regional approach to analysis. Looking across boundaries is important to understanding relative value when making habitat conservation decisions. With this project, The Nature Conservancy (TNC) proposes to: (1) develop a suite of regional natural resource maps for the South Atlantic; (2) create a report describing data source, analytical methods and mapping results that includes a summary of...
This layer represents the heatmap output of the Marxan analysis for the resilience-based scenario. This layer was developed as part of a collaborative project between the University of Hawaii Manoa (Hawaii Coral Reef Initiative), Hawaii Division of Aquatic Resources, and the Center for Ocean Solutions. Coral reefs in Hawaii are increasingly at risk due to climate change and other human impacts. Recent bleaching events caused mortality in many reefs around the islands, prompting state resource management agencies to form a plan to protect them and promote recovery. The goal of this project was to use Marxan spatial analysis software to identify reef locations that have the best chance to recover and thrive under...
The tundra biome is the dominant terrestrial ecosystem of the circumpolar north, and its fate in a rapidly changing climate is of high scientific and socioeconomic concern. One of those concerns is that the majority of caribou herds throughout the circumpolar north are declining, perhaps as a result of climate change. The principal objective of this research is to reveal the connections between soil nutrient cycling, forage quality and caribou habitat selection.

The PFLCC has recently completed a set of comprehensive conservation planning scenarios for the state of Florida. This represents the first statewide effort to assess likely alternative futures for conservation considering an array of financial, biological, climatological and urbanistic conditions. These spatially explicit and temporal scenarios simulate both urban growth and climate change and identify the most suitable areas for conservation given the resulting land use pattern. Conservation allocations are based on both fee-title and conservation easements. The conservation priorities and mechanisms expressed in these scenarios are based on a wide set of contributing factors, and simulated conservation is purposefully...

This data represents an assessment of forest patch size used in the ecological assessment of upland hardwood systems by the GCPO LCC. We used a combination of remote sensing products including 2011 National Land Cover Database (NLCD) forest classes and the 2011 MAV forest classification layer produced by the Lower Mississippi Valley Joint Venture to delineate patches of all forest types in the GCPO LCC. We used NLCD as the primary data source when assessing forests outside the GCPO LCC MAV subgeography, and the LMVJV forest classification as the primary data source for forest assessment within the MAV. NLCD was developed using 2011 Landsat TM imagery, with forest classes including only areas with trees exceeding...

Potential Evapotranspiration (PET): These data represent decadal mean totals of potential evapotranspiration estimates (mm). The file name specifies the decade the raster represents. For example, a file named pet_mean_mm_decadal_CCCMA_CGCM31_A1B_annual_2000-2009.tif represents the decade spanning 2000-2009. The data were generated by using the Hamon equation and output from CCCMA (also CGCM3.1), a third generation coupled global climate model created by the Canadian Centre for Climate Modeling and Analysis. Data are at 2km x 2km resolution, and all data are stored in geotiffs. Calculations were performed using R 2.12.1 and 2.12.2 for Mac OS Leopard, and data were formatted into geotiffs using the raster and rgdal...
This Esri file geodatabase contains the Arid Lands Initiative’s Priority Core Areas (PCAs) and Priority Linkage Areas (PLAs). For all PCAs and PLAs over 5,000 acres in size, we developed a "scorecard" that presents its rank, relative to the other PLAs, for a range of threats and values. Both the raw, continuous values and the ranks are available in the attributes of these feature classes. Details about each field are provided in the fields metadata section. The citations in the fields metadata can all be found in the references section of the Phase 2 final report, available here. The full report with PCA scorecards is available here, and the addendum report with PLA scorecards is here. Most of the raw input...

This categorical CWD raster was developed from a project-wide CWD raster. For each of the five fracture zones, the CWD raster was partitioned into zone-specific, 10 equal-area class map, ranging from low CWD to high CWD.
We have completed an array of high-resolution simulations of present and future climate over Western North America (WNA) and Eastern North America (ENA) by dynamically downscaling global climate simulations using a regional climate model, RegCM3. The simulations are intended to provide long time series of internally consistent surface and atmospheric variables for use in climate-related research. In addition to providing high-resolution weather and climate data for the past, present, and future, we have developed an integrated data flow and methodology for processing, summarizing, viewing, and delivering the climate datasets to a wide range of potential users. Our simulations were run over 50- and 15-kilometer model...

This database includes fire perimeter polygons for fires which reached a size >= 385 ha, and burned between the years of 1984-2011. Each fire has a unique numeric identifier of "PolyID". Additional attributes are as follows: FIRE_ID: For those fires with an ID, the ID assigned by the reporting agency of the MTBS project. FIRENAME: Names of those fires which are named. This is uncommon in Canada. YEAR: The year the fire burned. MONTH: The month the fire burned. If no month data is available the field includes a 0. DAY: The date the fire burned. Depending on the agency which provided the data, this may be the ignition date, the date of initial observation, the date of initial response, or the date the fire was extinguished....

Ecoregions denote areas of general similarity in ecosystems and in the type, quality, and quantity of environmental resources. They are designed to serve as a spatial framework for the research, assessment, management, and monitoring of ecosystems and ecosystem components. These general purpose regions are critical for structuring and implementing ecosystem management strategies across federal agencies, state agencies, and nongovernment organizations that are responsible for different types of resources within the same geographical areas. The approach used to compile this map is based on the premise that ecological regions can be identified through the analysis of patterns of biotic and abiotic phenomena, including...
