The South Atlantic Landscape Conservation Cooperative (SALCC) project area supports a wide variety of critical estuarine and marine habitats. However, the existing maps of these resources were created at different scales and are housed in a variety of locations. This can be challenging for users and limits their utility for a regional approach to analysis. Looking across boundaries is important to understanding relative value when making habitat conservation decisions. With this project, The Nature Conservancy (TNC) proposes to: (1) develop a suite of regional natural resource maps for the South Atlantic; (2) create a report describing data source, analytical methods and mapping results that includes a summary of...

This research will (1) develop a multi-model application to simulate streamflow using a monthly water balance model and daily time step hydrologic models (physical-process based and statistical) for all watersheds of the Gulf Coastal Plains and Ozarks Landscape Conservation Cooperative and (2) provide products from these models (flow characteristics - magnitude, timing, duration, rate of change, and frequency) for a range of configurations (current and future climate and landscape) through a web interface which can be used to inform management decisions.

The HRUs available here are for an application of the Precipitation Runoff Modeling System (PRMS) in the southeastern United States by LaFontaine and others (2017). A Geographic Information System (GIS) file for the HRUs is provided as a shapefile with attribute hru_id_1 identifying the numbering convention used in the PRMS model. This GIS file represents the watershed area for an approximately 1.16 million square kilometer area of the southeastern United States.

This dataset represents the cumulative result of multi-season classification of land cover in the GCPO LCC geography to NatureServe Ecological Systems based on 2011 seasonal Landsat Satellite Imagery. The approach used a Random Forest algorithm and several dozen input data layers to classify land cover at a 30 m pixel resolution. The description below is taken directly from the report titled “Update of the Eastern GCPO Land Cover Database to 2011 Using a LS2SRC Approach”, by Dr. Qingmin Meng, Department of Geosciences, Mississippi State University.Random Forest classifier is based on the general decision tree approach, which has been a popular approach to multilevel and multistage decision making. Its basic idea...

Continuous, long-term monitoring of the food habits of marine birds is a key component in detecting responses to anticipated climate change of both the birds and the prey populations on which they depend. The Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge (AMNWR) has been collecting seabird diet samples from the Pribilof and Aleutian Islands for more than 30 years. With support from previous LCC funding, AMNWR has developed protocols for zooplankton sample analysis, created a reference collection of seabird prey items, and helped develop and populate a publicly available data management system. Still needed are process and capacity for whole fish samples and digested fish samples (hard parts such as otoliths). This project...

This project integrates projections from two climate downscaling approaches into a series of future climate scenarios that will be used to assess the vulnerability of resources and ecosystem services within the Aleutian and Bering Sea Islands LCC. It consists of 4 phases: 1) downscaled climate model integration and synthesis, and engagement with key researchers; 2) the development of a set of likely future climate scenarios based on common model projections; 3) an evaluation and synthesis of vulnerabilities of key resources and ecosystem services; and 4) presentation of results and engagement of regional managers and stakeholders in a dialogue about further research and implications. This project will occur as collaboration...

Eastern Tallgrass Prairie and Big Rivers LCC is one of 22 Landscape Conservation Cooperatives (LCCs) that serve as a forum for collaboration among many diverse partners working together to meet shared natural and cultural resource priorities for current and future generations. The ETPBR LCC is dedicated to addressing the conservation challenges of a heavily agricultural landscape that stretches across the nation’s heartland from southwest Ohio westward across to parts of eastern Kansas, Oklahoma and Nebraska and northward into segments of Iowa, South Dakota and Minnesota. Our vision is to restore and connect wildlife with people on the rich soils of a functional, working landscape. The ETPBR LCC Steering Committee...

This project will result in development of an information management and delivery system to coordinate science communication platforms and to build a catalog inside of the USGS ScienceBase data and information management platform. The tasks maximize use of available products and services developed and tested by data experts working together through LCC's, Climate Science Centers, and the National Climate Change and Wildlife Science Center. In working with USGS Fort Collins (FORT) to complete the tasks, the Desert LCC will be responsible for providing input on specifications, data entry and maintenance of records in Science Base to populate the tools that comprise the information management and delivery system, and...

Sky Island Alliance (SIA) is a non-governmental organizational that works to protect and restore the rich natural heritage of native species and habitats in the Sky Island Region. We work with volunteers, scientists, land-owners, public officials, and government agencies to establish protected areas, restore healthy landscapes, and promote public appreciation of the region’s unique biological diversity. Because of our long-standing collaborative relationships with land managers and our large corps of skilled volunteers, we were in a unique position to spearhead this project.SIA initiated this springs inventory, assessment and management planning project to develop baseline information on springs in the Sky Island...

A “gateway” using Data Basin technology has been developed to serve the data integration, collaboration and outreach needs of the NPLCC. The gateway will continue to be a customized interface of the Data Basin platform that includes special branding, curation of spatial content, and direct links to selected sites in support of projects funded by and for the NPLCC . Conservation Biology Institute will add to the “gateway” a spatial data visualization tool to showcase priority data from the Pacific Marine and Estuarine Fish Habitat Partnership.

To inform management for a resilient and functioning landscape, we need to understand how the landscape is changing. The Northwest Boreal Landscape Conservation Cooperative, working with a diverse group of managers and stakeholders, initiated development of a coordinated monitoring system for the northwest boreal ecoregion in 2016. The goal for the coordinated monitoring system is to provide a set of common denominators (i.e., minimum standards) that will allow cooperators to combine monitoring data to make landscape-scale inferences. The monitoring system is intended to detect landscape-scale changes related to climate change or human disturbance. This effort is intended to leverage limited monitoring resources...

This project involved developing a new design for the South Atlantic LCC website (including development of new code and graphics/images as needed) and designing a factsheet template, an online newsletter template, a powerpoint template, and small info cards based on the modern website redesign. The project initially specified the Ning 3.0 platform, which changed to WordPress when Ning stopped supporting upgrades to Version 3.0.

This project will produce an existing vegetation type map at 30m resolution for the entire Western Alaska LCC region. The lack of a consistently mapped vegetation data layer for Alaska has been identified as a primary road block for many conservation and management entities across the state. This project will address a number of the LCC conservation goals by addressing a baseline science need that is the foundation for current and future project within the region.

The purpose of the research is to develop a storm surge model for the YK Delta area and to apply it to determine biological impacts of storm surges in the current and future climates. This research is needed as storm surges are expected to be more frequent and more severe in the YK Delta area due to climate change and sea level rise. The biological impacts in the YK Delta due to the changed storm surges could be extreme. With the model, we will study 10 storms over the 1980 – 2011 time period. Model output will be used to determine the recurrence interval for the individual storms. With the model output from individual storms, an inundation index (time-integral of water level during a storm) will be calculated....

Alaska’s freshwater resources, vitally important for salmon and other species, are vulnerable to changes resulting from climate change. Though temperature is a critical element in the suitability of aquatic habitats, Alaska’s stream and lake temperature monitoring is occurring through independent agencies/partners without a means to link and share data. Because a coordinated network of monitoring data can help scientists and managers understand how aquatic systems are responding to climate change, conducting an inventory of past and present stream and lake temperature monitoring efforts has been identified as a priority science need for Alaska. This project will consolidate existing monitoring site locations and...
