The USDA’s Insect and Disease Survey dataset was used to investigate the distribution and timing of outbreaks across the SRLCC. The mortality of trees due to agents other than fire across the SRLCC was extensive from 2001 through 2010. Insects and Disease Survey 2001-2010. U.S. Department of Agriculture, Forest Service. Implementing conservation in the face of unprecedented landscape change requires an understanding of processes and scales that limit wildlife populations. We assessed landscape-level processes influencing sage-grouse (Centrocercus urophasianus), to a migratory population in the Milk River Basin (MRB), northeast Montana, USA, and south-central Saskatchewan, Canada. A regional analysis of leks (e.g., communal breeding sites) documented that populations impacted by the increasing extent of agricultural tillage, roads, and energy development out to spatial scales larger than previously known. Using bird abundance as a novel way to evaluate human impacts revealed relationships that would have been missed had we not incorporated...

We produced this data set as part of a larger, integrated study to assess the statuses of populations of Anaxyrus canorus and the causes of observed effects on fitness at field sites, primarily in Yosemite National Park near Tioga Pass, from 1996 to 2001. We assessed the three general categories (early, mid, and late) for the developmental stage at which embryos of A. canorus died among various breeding sites from 1999 to 2001. We visually evaluated each individual embryo in an egg mass in situ while kneeling alongside it immediately before, at, or very soon after hatching (when individual capsules remained from hatched embryos and when any remnants of dead embryos typically still were visible). We did not assess...

To assess embryo mortality, we visually evaluated each individual embryo in an egg mass in situ while kneeling alongside it immediately before, at, or very soon after hatching (when individual capsules remained from hatched embryos and when any remnants of dead embryos typically still were visible). We did not assess mortality in any egg masses that had deteriorated too far to evaluate embryos. In 2001, a limited number of field personnel caused us to estimate...

We produced this data set as part of a larger, integrated study to assess the statuses of populations of Anaxyrus canorus and the causes of observed effects on fitness at field sites, primarily in Yosemite National Park near Tioga Pass, from 1996 to 2001. We conducted a field experiment in 1999 to test for effects of enclosing embryos of A. canorus and moving them to slightly deeper water, thereby reducing the potential for exposure to ice and freezing temperatures, on hatching success at five breeding sites. We split freshly laid egg masses approximately into halves. We left one indiscriminately chosen half of each mass where it was deposited originally (replicates of which were scattered among the shallow waters)...

The Forests to Faucets project uses a GIS to model and map the land areas across the United States that are most important to surface drinking water sources, as well as to identify forested areas important to the protection of drinking water and areas where drinking water supplies might be threatened by development, insects and diseases, and wildland fire. The results of this assessment provide information that can identify areas of interest for protecting surface drinking water quality. The spatial dataset can be ncorporated into broad-scale planning and can help identify areas for further local analysis. In addition it can be incorporated into existing decision support tools that currently lack spatial data on...
