The use of field-deployable fluorescence sensors to better understand dissolved organic matter concentrations and composition has grown immensely in recent years. Applications of these sensors to critical monitoring efforts have also grown to encompass post-fire monitoring, wastewater tracking, and use as a proxy for various contaminants. Despite the growth, it is well known that these sensors are subject to various interferences and require corrections for temperature, turbidity, and concentration effects. Although temperature corrections are widely applicable across sensors, the turbidity and concentration corrections can be site-specific and/or sensor-specific. The corrections can even be subject to changes in...

These data are comprised of measurements of elements (e.g., uranium, cobalt, nickel, copper, zinc, cadmium, lead, etc.), carbon, and particle size determination in Canyon Mine containment pond sediment samples collected in calendar year 2018. First posted: March 15, 2019 Revised: July 18, 2019
Groundwater data were collected in the spring and fall of 2008 from three sites representing different geological settings and biogeochemical conditions within the surficial glacial aquifer of Long Island, NY. Investigations were designed to examine the extent to which average vadose zone thickness in contributing watersheds controlled biogeochemical conditions and processes, including dissolved oxygen concentration (DO), oxidation-reduction potential (Eh), dissolved organic carbon concentration (DOC), and microbial dinitrogen (N2) production. Greatest N2 production was observed at the south shore of Long Island, which is characterized by a thin vadose zone, low DO and Eh, and relatively high DOC. Limited N2 production...

This data release contains the results from a study that characterized the concentration and quality of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) in the McKenzie River, a relatively pristine watershed in western Oregon, and its link to forming disinfection by-products (DBPs) in treated drinking water. The study aimed to identify the primary source(s) of DOC in source water for the Eugene Water and Electric Board’s (EWEB) conventional treatment plant on the McKenzie River near river mile 11, upstream of Hayden Bridge. The two classes of regulated compounds examined—trihalomethanes (THMs) and haloacetic acids (HAAs)—form when organic carbon in raw source water reacts with chlorine and (or) bromine during water treatment. The...

These data are associated with experiments performed in 2016 and 2017 in the Fox rivermouth (Green Bay, WI; Lake Michigan). Between the De Pere Dam and the Lake Michigan coastline, we performed experiments to measure water column transformation of dissolved organic matter (DOM) and sediment flux of DOM. These experiments consisted of incubations of surface water or intact sediment cores and repeated measures over time of DOM concentration and optical properties. When these experiments were performed, we also measured inorganic nitrogen and phosphorus dynamics. Results and data related to nitrogen and phosphorus have already been published. We also measured ancillary environmental data that would assist in understanding...

Assessment of biogeochemical processes and transformations at the aquifer-estuary interface and measurement of the chemical flux from submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) zones to coastal water bodies are critical for evaluating ecosystem service, geochemical budgets, and eutrophication status. The U.S. Geological Survey and the University of Delaware measured rates of SGD and concentrations of dissolved constituents, including nitrogen species, from recirculating ultrasonic and manual seepage meters, and in nearshore groundwater, on the southern shore of Guinea Creek, an estuarine tributary of Rehoboth Bay, in Millsboro, Delaware, in June, August, and October of 2015. A novel oxygen- and light-regulated seepage...
This data release supports an analysis of changes in dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentration and in the slope of the concentration-discharge relation in the Sleepers River Research Watershed W9 near North Danville, Vermont 1991 to 2018. The data release includes pre-processed model inputs and model outputs. W9 is a 40.5-hectare forested sub-watershed of the Sleepers River Research Watershed that was originally established by the U.S. Department of Agriculture in 1959 and has been intensively studied by the USGS since 1991. The W9 headwater sub-watershed drains to Pope Brook and is gaged at USGS station ID 01135100. Pope Brook flows into Sleepers River and ultimately into the Connecticut River. Two models...

Data includes fine‑scale (1.5 cm minimum resolution) vertical solute concentrations for filtered methylmercury (ng/L), filtered total mercury (ng/L), dissolved organic carbon (mg/L), and dissolved chloride (micromole/L) in SixMile Brook, New York and McTier Creek, South Carolina. Vertical solute data were assessed one time at one site in each stream in 2009, at edge-of-water (margin) and center-of-channel (channel) using two mini-piezometer (USGS MINIPOINT) devices (seven 0.325 cm stainless steel tubes, 0.8 cm screened interval). Each MINIPOINT device was installed with sampling points in surface water and at approximately 1.5, 4.5, 7.5, 12.5, 17.5, 30, and 60 cm below the bed-sediment/surface water interface.
