These data were compiled for a study that investigated the effects of drought seasonality and plant community composition in a dryland ecosystem. In 2015 U.S. Geological Survey ecologists recorded vegetation and soil moisture data in 36 experimental plots which manipulated precipitation in two plant community types. The experiment consisted of three precipitation treatments: control (ambient precipitation), cool-season drought (-66% ambient precipitation November-April), and warm-season drought (-66% ambient precipitation May-October), applied in two plant communities (perennial grasses with or without a large shrub, Ephedra viridis) over a three-year period. These data were collected from 2015 to 2022 near Canyonlands...

This data represents occupancy predictions for western bumble bee in 2020 across the western conterminous United States. This product is a 30-meter resolution downscaled version of previously published occupancy layers for the western bumble bee. For more information on original publications, see the publication listed in the Larger Works Cited Section.

The grizzly bear distribution boundary represents the estimated geographic extent of occupied range of the Yellowstone grizzly bear population for the period 2008-2022. The distribution boundary was delineated to provide reliable estimations of grizzly bear occupancy throughout time and for use as a monitoring tool in grizzly bear management and conservation. The boundary was delineated by the Interagency Grizzly Bear Study Team (IGBST) using an interpolation method based on grizzly bear VHF telemetry and GPS locations as well as verified observations and signs of grizzly bears inside the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem during 2008 to 2022.

Patch-level summary of 8 climatic characteristics at each of 1,865 talus patches across 3 regions in the Rocky Mountains. Dataset notes the year in which the patch was surveyed for pikas, the values of its climatic characteristics (estimated from the ClimateNA dataset), the name of each talus patch, and which of the 3 regions each patch occurs in.

Geochemical analysis of carbonate rock samples collected from seep fields on the RB1903 and AT41 research expeditions in the U.S. Mid- and South Atlantic. Samples were collected as a fingerprint to past hydrocarbon seep activity, fluid source, and depositional environment.

The sagebrush ecosystem spans over 175 million acres in the western United States, and is biologically, culturally, and economically significant to the country. Many disturbances including prolonged drought, pinyon-juniper encroachment, and cycles of invasive grasses and wildfire, pose significant threats to the resilience of the sagebrush biome. To conserve the sagebrush biome and promote community and economic sustainability, the Department of the Interior’s bureaus and offices are working together with many public and private partners to implement a “defend and grow the core” approach to conserve remaining intact sagebrush habitat and ecosystem functions, as well as restore other habitat types which are important...

We used NLCD 2011, SSURGO, and SEGAP data to map the density of desired resources for open pine ecosystems and six focal species of birds and 2 reptiles within the historic range of longleaf pine east of the Mississippi River. Binary rasters were created of sites with desired characteristics such as land form, hydrology, land use and land cover, soils, potential habitat for focal species, and putative source populations of focal species. Each raster was smoothed using a kernel density estimator. Rasters were combined and scaled to map priority locations for the management of each focal species. Species’ rasters were combined and scaled to provide maps of overall priority for birds and for birds and reptiles. For...

This USGS data release includes a shapefile of outlet point locations for 12-digit hydrologic units (HU12s) from the Watershed Boundary Dataset (WBD), dated August 13, 2020 (U.S. Geological Survey and others, 2020), draining to the Gulf of Mexico in the south-central and southeastern United States. The outlet locations were derived by combining the WBD boundaries with flow direction grids from the National Hydrography Dataset Plus (NHDPlus) v 2.1 (U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and U.S. Geological Survey, 2012). Most of the outlet locations were determined by finding the cell with highest flow accumulation from the NHDPlus flow-direction grids within each WBD HU12 boundary. Some locations were found to be...

These tabular data were compiled for/to monitor vegetation and biocrust cover in a never grazed grassland located in Canyonlands National Park. An objective, or objectives, of our study was to document potential changes in biocrust and vegetation cover and species composition as related to changes in land use and climate change. These data represent a timeseries of long-term vegetation and biocrust monitoring plots, dating from 1996 to 2021. These data were collected at/in Virginia Park, Needles District of Canyonlands National Park, Utah. These data were collected by the U.S. Geological Survey, Southwest Biological Research Center in coordination with the US National Park Service. Data were collected via field...

This database contains literature citations and associated abstracts pertaining to the ecology and hydrology of terminal lakes in the Great Basin region of the western United States. This is not meant to be an exhaustive list, nor did we perform a systematic meta-analysis; rather, literature records were included based on topical relevance.

This data release includes 9 GeoTIFF rasters that represent percent cover of intertidal microbial biofilm on the mudflats of South San Francisco Bay, CA between June 2020, and June 2022. Rasters follow the naming scheme biofilmPC_YYYYMMDD_10m.tif, where “biofilmPC” describes the dataset, YYYYMMDD is the date of the image, and 10m is the spatial resolution of the raster. Raster data products were derived from 10m Sentinel-2 Muti-Spectral Imager (MSI) imagery, collected and maintained by the European Space Agency (ESA) and published for public access on Copernicus Data Hub (https://scihub.copernicus.eu/dhus/#/home). The area of interest includes the Eden Landing Ecological Reserve and all tidally exposed mudflats...
In response to the need and an intergovernmental commission for a high resolution and data-derived global ecosystem map, land surface elements of global ecological pattern were characterized in an ecophysiographic stratification of the planet. The stratification produced 3,923 terrestrial ecological land units (ELUs) at a base resolution of 250 meters. The ELUs were derived from data on land surface features in a three step approach. The first step involved acquiring or developing four global raster datalayers representing the primary components of ecosystem structure: bioclimate, landform, lithology, and land cover. These datasets generally represent the most accurate, current, globally comprehensive, and finest...
