Boundary for floristic regions used for the conservation assessment of Greater Sage-grouse and sagebrush habitat conducted by the Western Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies. The floristic provinces were digitized from a figure from Miller, R. F., and L. Eddleman. 2001. Spatial and temporal changes of sage-grouse habitat in the sagebrush biome. Oregon State University, Agricultural Experiment Station. Technical Bulletin 151. This coverage defines the floristic context in which a range-wide conservation assessment of the Greater Sage-grouse and sagebrush habitats was conducted. Defining the major floristic properties of areas occupied by the historical distribution of sage grouse permitted the comparison...

These heatmaps show a top 3 montane habitat fragmentation and loss stressor, as ranked by participants, and the concentration of participants who reported as working in each municipality or county who also voted for that stressor across the landscape. Symbology represents the percentage of participants with 0% = dark green, 0.0001 % - 24.99% = light green, 25% - 49.99% = yellow, 50% - 74.99% = orange, 75% - 100% = red. All counties and municipalities identified by participants as areas where they work were given a tally for each of the top 3 stressors that participants chose. Counties with a small number of participants were not adjusted for small sample size. These results were shared via a webinar hosted by the...
AbstractContext Conservation planning is increasingly using ‘‘coarse filters’’ based on the idea of conserving ‘‘nature’s stage’’. One such approach is based on ecosystems and the concept of ecological integrity, although myriad ways exist to measure ecological integrity. Objectives To describe our ecosystem-based index of ecological integrity (IEI) and its derivative index of ecological impact (ecoImpact), and illustrate their applications for conservation assessment and planning in the northeastern United States. Methods We characterized the biophysical setting of the landscape at the 30 m cell resolution using a parsimonious suite of settings variables. Based on these settings variables and mapped ecosystems, we...

Results are presented from Accelerator Mass Spectrometry (AMS) carbon-14 radiocarbon dating of carbonate rock samples collected from seep fields offshore the U.S. Mid- and South Atlantic in 2018 and 2019. Samples were collected as a fingerprint to past hydrocarbon seep activity, fluid source, and depositional environment.

This is the raw YKD salinity data for fixed and random plot 2006 - 2019. No attempt has been made for quality control on these data. These data are quality controled using the R code in the file ‘YKDsalinity_QC.R’ to produce the data used for analysis and sharing (‘YKDsalinity_QC.R’). These data should not generally be used or distributed other than when the quality control process is revised and downstream data files need to be recreated (i.e., information is needed from these raw data that is not represented in the quality control files).

The tabular dataset is a compilation of all historic observations of whooping crane locations up through 1941. Most of the records were obtained from Robert Porter Allen's 1952 report, "The Whooping Crane"; an additional 73 records were added from records found since 1952. Records include source (Allen 1952 [The Whooping Crane, Audubon]or other), location name, county, state or province, country (Canada, US, Mexico), estimated latitude and longitude, year, month, day, life stage (breeding, summering, wintering, migration, unknown), season (spring, summer, fall, winter), observer's name, and logical indicators of nesting, specimen taken, observer identified, or if captive bird. Completeness of each record is variable....

This file contains results from the project "Assessing climate-sensitive ecosystems in the southeastern U.S.", funded by the Department of Interior's Southeast Climate Science Center. Metrics fitting the categories of sensitivity, exposure, and adaptive capacity were calculated for twelve ecosystems in the southeastern U.S. and the Caribbean. Metrics include historic temperature and precipitation, projected future climate variables under two emissions scenarios, projected area affected by sea-level rise, proportion of each under protected status, distance from developed areas, variation in elevation, and human modification.

Data included in this data set are from in-field and edge-of-field surveys that recorded the presence of erosional features and cover of vegetation and bare ground on 1786 Conservation Reserve Program fields across three types of conservation practices (grassland, wetland, and wildlife). Field sampling data were recorded across six US Department of Agriculture Farm Production Regions (Corn belt, Lake states, Mountain, Northern plains, Pacific, Southern plains) from 2016 to 2018. The study area encompassed all or part of 14 states: Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota, Iowa, Missouri, Colorado, Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas. These data constitute the first national level...

This indicator represents the amount of overall acres of forested wetlands currently present in the South Atlantic geography.Reason for SelectionOverall acreage of existing forested wetlands provides an indicator of whether forested wetlands being inundated by sea level rise are being replaced or restored somewhere else. It is also well monitored and resonates with a diversity of audiences.Input Data– 2016 National Land Cover Database (NLCD)Mapping StepsAny pixels identified as “woody wetlands” in the 2016 NLCD were considered existing forested wetland.Final indicator valuesIndicator values were assigned as follows:1 = Forested wetlandDisclaimer: Comparing with Older Indicator VersionsThere are numerous problems...

High gradient streams and rivers of the Ozark Highlands were selected by the Gulf Coastal Plains and Ozarks (GCPO) Adaptation Science Management Team (ASMT) as a priority habitat system. The goal of this document discover and apply geospatial data and analysis to estimate the amount, configuration and condition of key habitat features of high gradient streams and rivers of the GCPO. The desired ecological state for priority habitat systems should characterize the least impacted condition – systems in this condition should be targets for maintenance/protection and the goal of restoration activities in degraded systems. In the GCPO Integrated Science Agenda (ISA), a general description of the desired ecological...

These tabular data were compiled for/to monitor vegetation and biocrust cover in a never grazed grassland located in Canyonlands National Park. An objective, or objectives, of our study was to document potential changes in biocrust and vegetation cover and species composition as related to changes in land use and climate change. These data represent a timeseries of long-term vegetation and biocrust monitoring plots, dating from 1996 to 2021. These data were collected at/in Virginia Park, Needles District of Canyonlands National Park, Utah. These data were collected by the U.S. Geological Survey, Southwest Biological Research Center in coordination with the US National Park Service. Data were collected via field...

Equitable Tree Canopy Cover is an indicator of the Midwest Landscape Initiative’s (MLI) 2023 Midwest Conservation Blueprint. The Blueprint is a basemap of priority lands and waters for conservation across the Midwest consisting of over 20 social and environmental values representing diverse interests across society. This indicator was chosen as a targetable, important feature of the MLI goals that will be used to track conditions over time and prioritize areas for conservation. Indicators were defined through elicitation and prioritization exercises with federal and state participants. Criteria for the indicators includes 1) actionable, 2) measurable, 3) relevant to multiple groups across the region, and/or 4) representative...
