The SRLCC provided funds to the states of Arizona and New Mexico to support development of the states Crucial Habitat Assessment Tools (CHATs) which provide a decision support system to better incorporate wildlife values, sensitive animals and plants, and important ecosystem features into land use decision-making to reduce conflicts and surprises.Several states have released wildlife mapping tools that are the foundation for displaying crucial wildlife and corridor information. The state and regional CHATs are non-regulatory, and give project planners and the general public access to credible scientific data on a broad scale for use in project analysis, siting and planning. This includes large-scale development...

This data represents an assessment of forest composition used in the ecological assessment of upland hardwood systems by the GCPO LCC. We used a combination of remote sensing products including 2011 National Land Cover Database (NLCD) forest classes and the 2011 MAV forest classification layer produced by the Lower Mississippi Valley Joint Venture to delineate patches of all forest types in the GCPO LCC. We used NLCD as the primary data source when assessing forests outside the GCPO LCC MAV subgeography, and the LMVJV forest classification as the primary data source for forest assessment within the MAV. NLCD was developed using 2011 Landsat TM imagery, with forest classes including only areas with trees exceeding...

Description of condition index value scores for estuarine tidal marsh along and within 10 km of the GCPO LCC Gulf Coast subgeography. A series of raster calculations were used in a dichotomous decision-based framework to compile a per-pixel draft condition index value at a 10 m resolution for GCPO estuarine tidal marsh based on the number of configuration and condition endpoints met within each marsh pixel. Pixels not identified as a estuarine marsh but that were identified as having the potential to be marsh were given a score of 1, provided the pixels were not classified as developed. Potential estuarine tidal marsh pixels were derived from a combination of potential estuarine tidal marsh classes in the Landfire...

This data set shows forests of North America, classified according to FAO ecological zones (EZ). The data set was created by modifying the Ecological Regions of North America (ecoregions) data included in the North American Atlas. Ecoregion classifications were converted to the FAO EZ classes, based on the Forest Resource Assessment (FRA) 2010, and minor adjustments were made to polygon geometry. In addition, data were added for Hawaii and Puerto Rico, and additional lakes were imported. The FAO ecological zones are based on a combination of climate (temperature and precipitation) and potential vegetation classifications. They are broad areas of relatively homogeneous vegetation, with similar physical characteristics....

The Gulf Coast Vulnerability Assessment (GCVA) used an expert opinion approach to qualitatively assess the vulnerability of four ecosystems: mangrove, oyster reef, tidal emergent marsh, and barrier islands, and a suite of wildlife species that depend on them. More than 50 individuals participated in the completion of the GCVA, facilitated via Ecosystem and Species Expert Teams. The GCVA made use of the Standardized Index of Vulnerability and Value Assessment (SIVVA) (Reece and Noss 2014) to provide an objective framework for evaluating vulnerability by guiding assessors through a series of questions related to the changes an ecosystem or species might experience due to climate change and other threats. Assessors...

Standing dead trees, or snags, are an important habitat element in any forested system, and provide diurnal or seasonal shelter for many LCC priority species. The ISA landscape endpoint for snag density in upland hardwood woodland and forest systems targets one large (≥16” dbh) snag for every five acres of forest (or approximately ~0.2 large snags/acre), reflected by cavity-roosting habitat needs of the silver-haired bat (Lasionycteris noctivagans) and ample other avian, and mammalian species that require cavities in snags to carry out their life history. We used USFS imputed density of large (>16” dbh) snags data (USDA Forest Service Remote Sensing Applications Center, personal communication) extracted through...

This is the collection of raw data was collected during MBM-AK TLSA annual molting goose surveys. Partial quality control has been completed for these data: following each survey, the observer listened to their survey recording that documented counts along transects and then transcribed these findings into these raw datasets (‘raw_data’). The observer listened to their recording a second time in order to confirm that their transcriptions were correct. Further quality control and tidying was completed for these raw data using R scripts noted by the file extension ‘.Rmd’ located in the ‘GitHub_Annual_Report_Code’ folder. Ultimately, these scripts produced final datasets (‘final_data’) containing data used in annual...

This assessment was conducted to fulfill the requirements of section 712 of the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 and to contribute to knowledge of the storage, fluxes, and balance of carbon and methane gas in ecosystems of Alaska. The carbon and methane variables were examined for major terrestrial ecosystems (uplands and wetlands) and inland aquatic ecosystems in Alaska in two time periods: baseline (from 1950 through 2009) and future (projections from 2010 through 2099). The assessment used measured and observed data and remote sensing, statistical methods, and simulation models. The national assessment, conducted using the methodology described in SIR 2010-5233, has been completed for the conterminous...

We assessed the impacts of co-occurring invasive plant species on fire regimes and postfire native communities in the Mojave Desert, western USA by analyzing the distribution and co-occurrence patterns of three invasive annual grasses known to alter fuel conditions and community structure: Red Brome (Bromus rubens), Cheatgrass (Bromus tectorum), and Mediterranean grass (Schismus spp.: Schismus arabicus and Schismus barbatus), and an invasive forb, red stemmed filaree (Erodium cicutarium) which can dominate postfire sites. We developed species distribution models (SDMs) for each of the four taxa and analyzed field plot data to assess the relationship between invasives and fire frequency, years postfire, and the impacts...

This data set shows Level I, II, and III ecological regions (ecoregions) of North America, and is an update and revision of files developed by Canada, Mexico, and the United States of America in the late 1990’s in a cooperative project for the Commission for Environmental Cooperation (CEC). These revised ecological regions were developed in a meeting between representatives of the three nations and CEC in April 2006 in Newport, Oregon. Ecoregions are areas of general similarity in ecosystems and in the type, quality, and quantity of environmental resources. The ecoregions in this data set are based on the premise that a hierarchy of ecological regions can be identified through the analysis of the patterns and...

Limited midstory density was also identified in the Integrated Science Agenda as an important component of upland hardwood systems in the GCPO geography, with midstory coverage ≤20% indicating a healthy additional vertical strata in the system. Midstory is an important habitat component for several ISA priority species, particularly those avian species who require midstory structure for nesting such as the wood thrush (Hylocichla mustelina). We again used plot-level Forest Inventory and Assessment data imputed at 250 m resolution across the GCPO LCC to assess tree density. The USFS imputed tree density data product provides raster maps for the conterminous U.S. generated using 250 m resolution MODIS satellite imagery,...
